My background: I have smoked for about 17 years. Starting with Newports, then Newport Lights, now Camel Menthal Lights, around 1/2 pack a day, and up to a pack a day on the weekends when drinking.

I have to do biometrics for work in 2 months, which means that I have about 1 month to quit smoking to pass the test. I would like to remain smoke-free. My fiance has decided to join me and quit smoking. (she smokes much less then I, and only when she drinks).

I've read through a couple threads and now seem more confused then ever.

I'm looking for a basic startup kit. One the size of a cig would be fine, not looking for anything much bigger. I want some juice with nicotene for when we drink, and some without nicotene so I can pass my biometrics.

Can anyone please lead me in the right direction? I also would love to receive it next week sometime so I can get started. I plan on using it primarirly, but I'm sure my fiance will probably share occasionally. Thanks in advance!

I know multiple people here will recommend the Volt from Smokeless Image. I ordered one yesterday so I am still a newb as well. Check out the link to the "Info Zone" at the top left corner of this page, has info on what the different types and sizes are.

I did about 8-10 hours of research yesterday and that is what I chose.

When I started vaping I got a KR808D-1 (manual) Starter Kit from MyVaporStore.com. It was pretty inexpensive but there are a few other places that are even cheaper. MVS is in NY so it should get to you pretty quickly. The kit comes with 5 prefilled cartomizers. They have plenty of different juices there and there are BILLIONS of other juice vendors. Congrats on wanting to quit smoking.

EDIT: Just saw the other posts, yeah, the Volt is pretty good.

Go with the volt from smokeless image. The are the best cig look-a-like "mini" on the market. The batteries last about 3 hours of vaping, the cartomizers are great and last a long time and are refillable , they have good prices and the customer service is second to none. They are very fast shippers. Every order I have placed with them has been at my door within 2-3 days with standard shipping.

If you ask around, you will see that all of the veterans, who don't even use minis, recommend the volt to people who want something that looks like a cig.

KR808D-1 and the likes are good cig-sized ones... but after my experience when I began, I wouldn't advise them if you're looking at maybe refilling. An ego is my weapon of choice - not much bigger than a normal cig if you use small carts, but no fear of flooding if you refil yourself. Have a good read - plenty of people here who will give you their 2p worth. Take your time, and choose wisely. :)

The Volt is a new model of a tried and true KR-808 design that has been torture tested and found worthy here on ECF. You will like it for a slim model ecig. Everyone gravitates to a larger battery ecig as they find that they enjoy vaping and you guys probably will do that, also. The eGo is a good model to look at for an inexpensive upgrade later on.

You might want to switch over to 0 nic juice at least 3 days before you have to be tested for cotinine. Some say it can be detected for up to a week and the test can also detect exposure to second hand smoke! Personally, I think it's enough to have to be confined to a smoking area at work. Tests to see what you do on your own time are excessively invasive, IMO. Maybe, one day the masses will rebel when tests are done to detect excessive fat and sugar consumption and your job depends on matching your body to an actuarial table for proper weight to retain your job.

Cotinine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cotinine has an in vivo half-life of approximately 20 hours, and is typically detectable for several days (up to one week) after the use of tobacco. The level of cotinine in the blood is proportionate to the amount of exposure to tobacco smoke, so it is a valuable indicator of tobacco smoke exposure, including secondary (passive) smoke.[8] People who smoke menthol cigarettes may retain cotinine in the blood for a longer period because menthol can compete with enzymatic metabolism of cotinine

Wow. So many great responses. I really appreciate all of your responses.
When I first joined ECF I said the same thing and the response..."We're good at spending other people's money" :D
Yes a sampler pack is best as there will be many juices you HATE. Also make sure the kit includes an atomizer- test the juices by dripping 2-3 drops on it- this way you don't foul up a cartomizer with juice you may not like.
Blank cartos are best and the cheapest way to go. Some of us have one vendor for hardware and others for juice. Realize if brand X is sold at a number of diff places they prolly will not taste the same. I DIY and have never bought juices Stateside so I'll leave to other vapers that actually buy U.S. juice. You could even start a new thread asking for juice selections. My advice is if you enjoy desserts or fruit try those. There will also be the nicotine level/ mg. Most start at 18 or 24 but seeing as you're a light smoker 12 mg may suffice.
Juice Components
Flavor- usually 10% of juice
PG enhances throat hit/ TH, lung hit and flavor- water like
VG= vapor and can mute flavor- very thick
Nicotine- gives TH, lung hit and our need for nicotine- has the most impact on TH and lung hit.
Standards for juice are 80/ 20 or 70/ 30 PG/ VG. I vape 60/ 40.
Understand also the Volt comes in 2 diff sizes with battery life being the differing factor.
Good Luck.

I'm one of those people who never recommend a cig-lookalike, but I recommend the Volt. I'd say get one of their sampler pack. Pbusardo is pretty tough on juices. As much as I like him for equipment reviews, taste is so subjective... A lot of people really like their flavors, so I'd give them a shot. They have sampler packs at smokelessimage.

Also get a box of blank cartridges to fill yourself. You can get them on their site as well. They are actually Kanger horizontal coil cartomizers and they aren't significantly cheaper at most other places. If it turns out that you really like one of their flavors, you can get the same flavor in a more economical bottle and refill the cartomizer (cartridge) yourself. Meanwhile, pick up sample flavors from some of the vendors that deal strictly, or mostly, in juices. Use those in your blanks.

It's always more economical to fill them yourself and the best juices and prices are usually found on sites devoted just to juice but, for an e-cig vendor, the juice prices at Smokeless Image are not out of line.

Hi, go to cleansmokeusa.com and look at the Joyetech 510, also a full line of e-liquid to choose from in different flavors and strengths. Hope this helps

With all due respect, I started with a Joyetech 510 over 2 years ago. There were few other good options back then. Nowadays, I would never recommend that unit. It can't even begin to compare with the performance or battery life of a Volt.

One last point as I'm leaving for the cottage soon. Understand the Volt is a great PV but becasue of it's small size it does have limitations. At least Smokelessimage is an ECF listed vendor and they must follow a certain code of biz ethics. They also have 30 day return policy:
Returns Policy

Customer Satisfaction is of utmost importance at Smokelessimage.com. If you are dissatisfied with merchandise purchased through Smokelessimage.com for any reason, you may return the item within 30 days from the time of the order. For sanitary reasons, and the overall safety of our Customers, we cannot accept returns of Filter Tips. Therefore, our Returns Policy EXCLUDES any and all cartridges or liquid. At your option, you may receive a full refund, excluding shipping cost, or a replacement item if available. The process is very simple and straightforward:

1. Repackage the item including all original parts, packing material, instructions, etc. Within reason, this means that everything must be returned exactly as it was sent to you. Poor repackaging or the return of damaged merchandise could result in refusal of your return and loss of any refund or replacement item.

3. Include a copy of the original Packing List in the package, and indicate whether you would like to be refunded for the item, or a replacement sent out.

4. Ship the item (at your expense and your choice of carrier) to the address with which you were provided on the original Packing List that was sent with your item.

5. If you are to receive a refund, it will be issued by Smokeless Image LLC when the returned item has been received in satisfactory condition. Refunds will be processed within 10 business days of receiving the items.

One more thing. If you decide on the Volt, pay the extra $1 and get the "mega" batteries. The standard batteries are 220mah and the megas are 380mah. That translates into almost twice the run time per charge and, in the world of small batteries, run time per charge is a major, major consideration. The standard size should last about 2 hours per charge, the mega batteries about 3.5 hours.
