I can see how the deal with used REO's could be a problem. I have picked up 3 of my 4 used. Sorry, Rob.
Of the
three, two were collectible and NLP. Of them, one cost me a fairly hefty fee to get upgraded to better than new status, the other, the previous owner had already had upgraded. The money spent on the one I sent in, could have made the original purchase uneconomical, but the item was a collectible and I had it upgraded to the maximum of what is available. It is a new unit as far as I am concerned. All told, if you get ANYTHING used, you should clean the heck out of it, just in case. I have not ever received, from Reo peeps, anything that was disgusting and I clean them all really good anyway.
You want to make sure you are getting at least the new contacts and verify that the 510 connector is good, and then you can pretty much be happy. I have learned, as Russ stated, that
batteries included are not to be considered in your decision. They are probably dead or near so, calculate their value as minimal. You can get fantastic deals on
mods with atty's that the seller doesn't want to separate.
Like anything else, there is a risk involved. The REO is so simple, a bunch of photo's should tell you what you are getting without really worrying too much.
I have had, pretty much, all happy experiences in getting used gear on this forum. Sometimes I have made mistakes in my estimation of worth. That's my problem. All the deals I have had were pretty much straight, some require more cleaning than others, and you should just assume and do the cleaning.
I would tend to agree with getting new unless you are really getting a deal. You get to order exactly what you want and no other person has had an opportunity to hooptie it up for you.
used is fine, new is the greatest...
Just like everything else.
