Lots of sample letters floating around as well, but here's a very easy one:

Dear Assemblymember:

I am writing to urge you to oppose SB3174, a bill that would make the sale of electronic cigarettes illegal in the state of Illinois.

Many long-term smokers have had great success switching from traditional cigarettes to e-cigarettes. Almost all of them have experienced benefits; for example, they breathe easier, no longer cough, and have improved senses of taste and smell. They appreciate that there is no secondhand smoke, flame, ash, or litter with e-cigarettes.

If this bill passes, Illinois residents will be unable to purchase e-cigarettes, and many will feel they have no choice but to return to smoking deadly cigarettes. Moreover, non-residents will not be able to purchase their e-cigarettes from Illinois companies they know and trust. This would be a great disservice both to consumers of e-cigarettes and to the businesses that provide them.

While I fully support prohibiting the sale of e-cigarettes to minors, to take away this life-saving choice from adults is clearly wrong. The American Association of Public Health Physicians estimates the risk of electronic cigarettes to be less than 1% of the risk from smoking traditional cigarettes, so it makes no sense to ban the safer choice while leaving the deadliest product on the market.

Please consider both sides of this important issue carefully before casting your vote for something that will have such a profound impact on people's lives.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Emails can (and often do) get ignored . . . as Vicks said, a snail mail or fax letter is harder to ignore. Phone calls are also good. Let these people know how important it is that e-cigarettes remain a viable alternative for adults.

Politicians hear that the American Lung Association wants e-cigarettes banned, and they feel that the ALA knows what it's talking about . . . most of the politicians simply don't understand that there is another side to the story, that e-cigarettes are life-savers to so many of us.

Let's educate our legislators so that they are armed with information to make good choices and to do the right thing.

It's VERY close to passing.

Illinois vaping community is scrambling to get the word out and stop it.

I had the Chicago tribune interview me the other day about it, and then I put them in contact with Chris from Cigtechs so they could talk to somebody on the business side.

Unlike with other stories I often hear of, this reporter actually was interviewing me as if the article was sympathetic to E-Cigarette users and not against.

Just waiting to see it in print before I know for sure.

The Illinois vapers contingent did an awesome job! The committee refused to vote on the bill until they get more information. And they made the news! Vote on electronic cigarettes ban postponed in Ill. House committee | Political Fix | STLtoday

Hopefuly, JustJulie will come by and fill us in on some of the details - they have some great stories! They called me after the meeting and sounded pumped, excited and hopeful!

The job is not done yet - there is another meeting next week. And then we have to take our fight to New York!!
