I just joined CASAA and intend to follow their advice. I suggest others to do the same as a concerted effort has to be a better option than acting individually.
I failed to find such info @ CASSA

going to the illinois government's webpage the bill is still in commitee....
Actually it went to senate first where it passed 49-4 and is in house human services commitee (but the commitee chairperson is a co-sponsor of the bill)

The senate did amend it though..and not for the better..
Senate Committee Amendment No. 1
Provides that "tobacco product" is defined under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act rather than Illinois law. Deletes reference to "modified-risk product".

you can follow the bill here: Illinois General Assembly - Bill Status for SB3174

A Human Services Committee hearing on SB 3174 is scheduled for Apr 14, 2010, 9:00AM Stratton Building Room D-1 Springfield, IL. That is this WEDNESDAY. Even though the hearing is on the schedule, it must be actually called up by the main HR sponsor (Colvin) in order to occur. Hopefully, we will find out by Monday afternoon whether he intends to call it or not.

If he does intend to call it for a hearing on Wednesday, we really need Illinois residents to attend. I know this is incredibly short notice, but it just appeared on the schedule today. I cannot emphasize enough how important this hearing is.

Illinois residents, especially those who live near Springfield, are desperately needed to attend this hearing. Again, we're not certain the hearing actually will take place on Wednesday, but we need to be prepared for that possibility. I will post Monday to update everyone on the status of this.

If you live in Illinois and believe you may be able to attend the hearing, please PM me and/or post on this thread.

Damnit!
I wish I could attend this. I live all the way up north by the WI border though.

I just want to make sure I have this right. It is with the house committee, right. It hasn't officially gone to the house yet. (this could die with the committee and not go to vote at the house, right?)

I did write a letter to my representative, just incase it does to go the house. Of course I got one of those BS letters and then I think he wrote on it "will help if I can" but good lord I'm totally guessing on what it says, his handwriting is horrible. He could be telling me to go f off for all I know.

Anyone that can help here in IL. please, please help. I have smaller children in school and I'm just to far away to be able to make that kind of trip. This is IL politics, and anyone who has lived in this state long enough knows they love to do their own thing. If any state in US will get a law like this passed it's IL. Let's send a message to these idiots.

Yes, Safira, that's exactly correct--it is in the Human Services Committee right now. It could die in Committee and never make it to a full vote before the House of Representatives. However, I honestly have no idea how likely a scenario that is. At this point, though, given limited resources and time, we are focusing our efforts primarily on the Human Services Committee.

In terms of the hearing scheduled for Wednesday, 4/14/10 before the Human Services Committee, there are many bills set for hearing that day. We have been told by Representative Colvin's office (the main sponsor of the bill in the House) that in order for there to actually be a hearing on 4/14, Rep. Colvin will have to call it. We're hoping to find out Monday afternoon whether he intends to call it for hearing that date or not.

I am hopeful that it will not be called for hearing that day, but we need to be prepared for just about any scenario.

I appreciate that this not necessarily a short trip for folks, work/family schedules conflict, and it's all exacerbated by us not knowing for sure that it's going to happen on that date. It makes this into a bit of a logistical mess. However, I am really hoping that folks will make plans to attend Wednesday (understanding that we probably won't know until Monday whether it's a go).

Again, anyone who feels they might be able to attend Wednesday or might possibly be able to attend if it is scheduled for another date, please contact me via PM or post on this thread. I'll be out this evening, but I will be checking on this thread and checking my PMs throughout the weekend.

I just wanted to include a reply that I received from representative Dan Burke:

Dear Mary,
Thanks for the communication, I will work to defeat this absurd Bill.

Dan Burke
State Representative
23rd District

I just wanted to include this.

Mary

Well, that sounds like a representative who says what he thinks. :) Great response.

THE HEARING IS GOING FORWARD!!!!!

Wednesday, 4/14, 9:00 a.m. Stratton Building, Room D-1. We will plan on meeting outside the building at 8:30 a.m.

The street address for the Stratton Building is 401 S. Spring, Springfield, IL 62706. Apparently, there are a few different Stratton Buildings out there, and this is the address provided by Rep. Jakobsson's office.

I'm not sure if this will help or not, but it's possible ammo.

I just recently found a Journal of Pharmacology abstract of the 1940s study on vaporized propylene glycol which proved long term inhalation of large amounts is safe and in fact beneficial. Low and behold, the study was done in part by researchers at the University of Chicago. Always a possibility that they might listen to one of their own.

TESTS FOR THE CHRONIC TOXICITY OF PROPYLEXE GLYCOL AND TRIETHYLENE GLYCOL ON MONKEYS AND RATS BY VAPOR INHALATION AND ORAL ADMINISTRATION ? JPET
