A short while ago I had an opportunity to shoot a mid-1960s issue SVD. Beautiful rifle! With the ammo costing a tad over a dollar a round, I didn't shoot enough to get real comfortable with it, but it was a nice experience to put 3 out of 5 on target at 1,000 yards.

Absolutely. I'd own at least one SVD, (or a Tigr), if they didn't sell for well over $3k these days due to Gubmint-imposed artificial rarity.
Where the hell do you buy your 7.62x54r for north of a buck a round? I recommend you stop.

Yep, back in the day you could've gotten an IZ-109 for ~$400-$500, but as you know, that's just a starting point for a gun like mine.

The specific brake on mine is a Monster Brake from Tromix.
It's about 5" long. My S-12's native barrel has been cut down to ~13.2", rethreaded for the brake, the brake threaded on, then silver soldered in place. The overall length is ~18.2", and no tax stamp or registration is required.

It has just been more of the "then" and less of the "now" lately. Going to break loose and buy a couple soon though. This thread has really got me wanting something new.

If it was up to me, I'd use the cheap stuff, but it isn't my rifle. The owner is really fussy -- since it was new, all she's ever used is 7N1, which is both pricey and rare. I offered to buy a spam can of 7N14, but she says they're crap.
It's my understanding (as in: I've seen them, read about them, but never owned or used one) the name comes from the clamshell shape of the ports. Instead of just being holes out the side, they're like scoops to redirect the gases backwards, something like putting a clamshell under a stream of water.
What I've seen and been told:
1) They're large, heavy and ugly as sin.
2) You get the blast in your face, almost as if you're having someone trim your nose hairs with a fifty caliber.

The Monster Brake does have "gills" on the side, though they're not rounded.
It does blow some of the blast back atcha, but I don't find it unpleasant. 'Course, shotgun shells are low pressure, not like rifle rounds. For the same reason, (low pressure ammunition), the size is necessary to effectively "brake" a shotgun. The Monster woks very, very well.
As for looks, that's subjective, but I dig it.
But if you get it just right, you can just annoy bystanders. My FAL had some angled barrel ports that threw the noise and fury about three feet left and right of the shooter, right where your range buddies like to stand...

I love my 10/22 as well, especially with Ruger BX-25 mags. She's the one I always prefer to start and finish with at "the range", (BLM land), to reinforce shooting fundamentals.
It used to be very cheap to fire hundreds of rnds per session. Due to the silly-assed panic, not so much anymore. It really sucks, as I've had to curtail my usual practice because of the insane increase in .22LR price, all due to panic buyers.

However, they did it in blatant violation of the will of the people of Colorado. We've already started to reverse this chit.. perhaps you heard about the 2 state senators, (2 of the very worst, including the senate president), we recently kicked the f out of office through recall elections?
Sheriff Maketa and the Sherrifs' Association still have a case pending to strike down the new laws as unconstitutional, (which they clearly are).
Regardless, they're unenforceable, and let's just say that I've already got enough standard mags to fully equip a few squads.
