saw this on a local TV show last week.

"What the heck was that!?" is probably what this woman said after she was engulfed by an explosion behind the bar. The only thing seriously injured was her dress, and come to find out, it was an e-cigarette plugged into an iPad charger that caused the explosion.

Bartender Finds Herself in the Middle of a Pub Explosion | RTM - RightThisMinute

Well, kudos to the reporter for stating the bartender, she or whoever, used the wrong charger for it. Too bad she didn't read this forum to find out the hows and whys to it all.

Strange that it was caught on camera. I mean why would anyone be filming the bartender if they didn't know what was going to happen?

Sounds a bit pre-planned?

the camera is for theft protection.... most bars have them to see if the cashiers are skimming the profits

Further proof that you should use only the charger recommended by the manufacturer of the battery, and plug the charger into the appropriate/recommended energy source (usb/wall adaptor).

Yeah, maybe you have plugged your charger into a computer usb port, I-Pad, XBox, Playstation, etc and gotten away with it. And perhaps you've been lucky. The above incident is proof that bad things can happen when you don't follow manufacturer recommendations.

yeah I saw it...
why dont people read the instructions that come with the batteries/mods???

hmmm nitromethane works in RC airplanes should work in my car too....

Maybe things have changed now, but I don't ever remember getting any instructions with any of my first kits. Actually, scratch that, my Spinner charger did have a sticker on it saying do not use for regular ego batteries but I didn't know what a regular ego battery or the difference between my Spinner and one was so I was still clueless.

Problem is that many people have a lot of experience with rechargeable batteries (with cellphones mainly) and do not suppose for one second they could be dangerous.

Kudos to the presenter for giving all the facts, warnings and recommendations at the end of the segment.

Can't wait til the next Bond or Covert ops McGiver type movie comes out, where they jury rig a box mod to blow open a locked cell and escape. Guns don't kill, it's the idiot who uses the wrong charger that one has to worry about.

Just like the guy who stored his spare batteries. loosely in side his back pack, and somehow, "heck, there is no way they could of connected" said he, but low and behold, next thing you know, an 18650 has shorted, going into current overrun, and fully vents.

The stored energy inside batteries, commands respect. If one doesn't properly charge, maintain, store and carry batteries correctly, they must be prepared to deal with the consequences.

And what really kills me, is that they have to put warnings on plastic dry cleaning bags that inform people that if you put a bag over your head, in can cause suffocation. And I'm thinking, if a person is going to do that, tis doubtful they are intelligent enough to read and comprehend in the first place.

Selective culling, heck, don't see anything wrong with that concept. lmao.

Actually, it was an AW IMR 18490 battery.

I don't understand, how do you charge an e-cig with an iPad charger? are they talking about the wall-wart?

yes the wall to USB adapter. some apple wall chargers can put out 2.4 amps (most e-cigs require a lot less). and coupled with an unregulated charging cable could cause some real damage
