I can't remember who is behind these ads. Canadian Lung Association I think. First time I ever heard them say "a NON-NICOTINE solution. So basically they want you on Varenicline (Champix) or Bupropion (Zyban). Nice. They want you to hit up the pharmaceuticals now. How about for those who don't want to quit using nicotine???
Zyban is an
All I can see in these ads is this year will not bode well for e-cigarettes. I'm sure they would have never said "non nicotine" if it wasn't for E-cigs being so popular.
Happy New Year everybody! vape on!

I've seen that ad a few times and I've also seen the Champix ads.

As a smoker (ex-smoker now thanks to e-cigs), I wanted something that was going to make my transition from analog cigarettes easy, not something that was going to make me feel like a hungry, constipated, hallucinating nut case.

I don't understand why any smoker would want to deal with the side effects associated with Champix........nausea, stomach or bowel problems like constipation, gas, dry mouth, vomiting, indigestion, headaches, dizziness, sleeping problems, unusual dreams, feeling tired, increased appetite and changes in taste. These are the "common" or mild side effects. When you start reading about the "serious" side effects you see things like changes in mood or behaviour, depression, agitation, aggression, thoughts of self harm, self harm, thinking about suicide, suicidal behaviour and hallucinations.

Compare that to the side effects associated with e-cigs.....dry mouth, possible reaction to either PG or VG (any others?) and most normal people would stay far, far away from Champix!

When I made an appointment with my GP to inform him I had begun vaping/ quit smoking we discussed traditional smoking cessation methods. When the topic of Varenicline (Champix) or Bupropion (Zyban) came up he had a look of absolute horror and stated he refused, unless pressured by the client, to issue a prescription...said the potential for immediate serious life threatening issues was far greater than that of smoking. He's very supportive of vaping and has asked me to help convert some of his clients. Bottom line is after seeing the remarkable success he's completely sold on vaping when other smoking cessations progs fail.

Same pimping going on here State side for Chantix. "I didn't want to use nicotine to stop smoking..." I don't think there's any big conspiracy behind it though. They're just trying to sell this as a "really great product feature!" - considering they have to juxtapose something against all the warnings that you might want to throw yourself under a bus if you use it...

I'll have to take that up with my GP next visit. I am one of two e cig users on a short list of patients (Gp near retirement and has not accepted new patients for years) but apparently the other e cig user is experiencing great results as well. The fate of E cigs bodes well in that office.

I know one person who quit with Champix and other than being more irritable (and irritating) I didn't notice much change but I never did regard her as being 'emotionally well balanced'.

Goto CASAA.ORG, visit Printable Materials, take with, hand out - yay! :) Some appointments can be very abbreviated. Or interrupted. Never hurts to leave a printable fact sheet behind.

Seen them many times in the last few months, I'm sure their pushing them because of...

1. Sell as much now as possible because ecigs are taking over and can't be stopped.
2. Follow the Money.

Note: I feel real sorry for the Woman in the commercial walking about her school where she started to smoke and just can't quit. Me yelling at the TV for her to try Vapeing I hope is working.

If I ever win the lottery Bill Boards well have nothing but Vapeing helps on them, please join CASAA and CAVR.

I totally agree. I have never tried those just because of the fear of side affects. I think e-cig is a much better way. I personally think that with cigarrette having so much of a negative sound I should really start using the word PV.

any time i hear, "If suicidal tendencies occur..." i just start laughing....

Sure you got a very small chance of quitting smoking, but your more likely to jump off a building than to live long enough to enjoy the benefits of being sig. free.

We should have a slogan, "try an e-cig, you life insurance payout will have to wait."

I've been touting the conspiracy, I seen it coming. Today, the first state is strong armed/bribed into lobbying for just that. Florida.

There is no need, my 'never a smoker' GP has really looked into ecigs and likes them a lot for hard case smokers like I was. Two 'test subjects' to watch doesn't hurt ecigs rep either. I'm sure that my GP isn't the only MD taking notice. A specialist I deal with was pretty pumped about my cutting tobacco ties as well giving me a hearty hand shake and a congrats.

The word is trickling out and the trickles are forming streams of good results. The next stop is rivers and critical mass.

Well, if you jump off a building, then you're no longer a smoker. Mission accomplished. :D

I still remember the hilarious skit/commercial parody on SNL about Chantix .. 'nuff said!
SNL – Chantix | Katabatic Digital

I tried Zyban once and it made me hyper & jittery and I smoked twice as much. Besides, I hate pills. Nicotine in itself isn't any more 'bad' than caffeine, actually also has some beneficial effects on the brain/concentration. It's the crappy method of delivery via burning cigarette that's horrible harmful. Never mind sugar and fat are probably more addictive and worse for ya!

Agreed, Steamix, that crap made me feel a bit crazy, I remember thinking "they prescribe this to people who are emotionally wobbly!?" yikes. I chucked it after 3 or 4 days, wasn't giving it a chance to make me feel crazier, ha. If nicotine was so harmful they wouldn't be allowing us to chew it or absorb it through our skin. Health Canada needs to get a grip re vaping.

Chantix and I had an interesting experience. I did get a prescription, with warnings from my doctor that if I felt lousy on it to discontinue and call him instantly.

He kind of neglected to mention (because he didn't know) that it's not a great idea for clinically depressed people who already rely on a mood stabilizer.

Yeah, that was a fun six weeks. In addition to the constant headache and nausea, you could flip a coin to see what my mood was at that particular instant. Plus, of course, it didn't do diddly to help with the quit smoking thing. In fact, with the mood swings, the urge to smoke was actually worse.

Strangely, I picked up the e-cig, had minimal mood disturbance (but did have some), no nausea, no headache, and I put down the cigs without too much difficulty. My doctor's now a huge fan of them.
