Anyone though of making a rudimentary "safety" thread for mixing?

Now that we have fairly high potency nicotine available online, I think it would be a great service to everyone if somebody who has worked with hazardous materials could put together a basic guide for safe mixing.

I searched high and low here looking for something like this, as well as general information about the 60mg and 100mg juices. For someone new to this it can be daunting due to the potential dangers involved.

Using common sense and taking basic precautions (gloves, mask, eye protection) I made my first mix using 100mg nicotine solution. No spills at all (not even a drop) but it was still unnerving.

From my reading here, I know there are several very qualified people to write up basic hazmat handling procedures. It could cover equipment, procedure, and cleanup as well.

Just a thought!

Storage is the most IMPORTANT safety concern. 60mg or 100mg NIC juice probably wouldn't make you too ill if you dripped a drop on your skin. But small children and pets are a huge concern when storing even your diluted, flavored juice at even 12mg NIC level.

We always immediately dilute 100+mg NIC down to 60mg and then store in a locked, safe place, that animals/children could not access in any way. With so many sweet tasting flavors out there, it's just going to take one idiot that leaves a bottle of juice laying around, for a small child to ingest. That will be some bad press for vaping, it's just a matter of time.

I totally agree about the storage! When I was done with mine, I locked it in my gun safe.

The only reason I went with the 100 over the 60 was to increase the nic of existing juice without losing flavor. I think I'm going to thin a bit of it out to 60 so I can work with it more easily. A lot of the recipes here call for 60.

Here's one dumb question for the experienced mixers. When working with low volumes, how do you ensure the containers don't tip over or otherwise spill?

You could scrounge up a piece of Styrofoam, a wood block, or whatever material you wish to use that is thick and large enough to be a stable base and drill in different size holes for various sized bottles.

I'm about to rig something up since between my poor eyesight and unsteady hands, its time I stop knocking those things over and wasting my money, lol.

I have detailed my processing for storage of 100 mg VG juice from MyFeedomSmokes (great stuff!!), and how I dispense and mix with it safely. I am a chemist with years of experience with hazardous compounds, and I am very glad someone is asking about this, as 60-100 mg juice is very dangerous, especially if you accidentally spill a large amount on you, like a few 100 mL.

Here are the threads and posts for procedure and stuff to buy for it:

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/myfreedomsmokes/43742-smoke-juice-storage-tips.html

My post is #6. And the actual processing:

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...smoke-juice-new-years-celabration-sale-5.html

My post is #43.

This was very thick 500 mL of 100 mg VG juice, thick as molasses. In the end, I have stored 50 mL amber bottles of the juice, with eurodropper inserts for syringe dispensing, so I never touch the stuff or worry about spilling it. The way I store my unflavored, it should last forever. One could freeze it, and it seems this is a smart thing to do.

Good luck, and stay safe to vape another day! ;)

No way Hobbt Lobby isn't in California!!! And tractor supply and hardware carry PG but it has other ingredients in it. Maybe they have a different bottle thats better. Gonna have ta go in to the store and check it out. Oh and for the safety of mixing Home Depot has all the gear you need including plastic aprons, or you could just ware a poncho.

Actually, it is not just the nic juice we should worry about. Unless one only uses flavours like LorAnn, which are probably safe to ingest out of the bottle (even if that is probably not a good idea), those can be a problem, too.

Recently, in a chat, a guy found food flavourings which were to be added to the finished food in permille, not even percent. 1 gramm per kilo, start from there. That he did not quite notice. What he noticed was "contains 75% PG", and he asked whether he could not just vape them out of the bottle. I still pale at the throught. And not just my taste buds, either.

I agree because I spend a lot of time investigating what is in flavors.
AND there are a lot of flavors that I'd like to try but haven't because of the unknown.

I don't think that 6% or 10% is particularly dangerous. Keep a rag around to wipe up any spills right away, particularly on your skin, and wash up after. Still, keep it away from people and animals that might unintentionally overindulge.

Just on principle, you'll want to set things up so that you don't need to touch anything. Use bottles with dropper caps, pipettes, syringes and needles as much as possible.

Work in milliliters, not drops. Plan your mixes. Match your needles to the orifices in your dropper bottles, match your syringes to the volume of each ingredient.

Don't cross contaminate your bottles. Use each needle and syringe once, then put it in your dirty pile and don't pick it up again.
