Thats why my Z-Day plans include local Buggin Out. My 4x4 is kept full at all times, and I know more than 1 way to get where my final destination is. I also have back up destinations all that fall within less than what my truck can do. Be sure to allow for the excess fuel you will lose going around broken down vehicles, 4 wheelin eats up more fuel and time you will be sitting going nowhere because everyone else is trying to get there too.
My personal rule of thumb, my truck can go roughly 350 miles on a full tank of fuel. Cut that figure in half, so I can go roughly 175 miles from my front door to where ever. That should allow me plenty of extra fuel to burn for any 4 wheeling I need to do. The remaining fuel can be siphoned out (old school 1975 model truck!!) rather easily to use as barter supplies or try to park and hide the truck for future use.
Knowing I have a 175 mile radius from my house, I can look at a map, and plan several different escape scenarios, depending on which way I need to head. Remember 95% of all Zombie movies teach us that no matter where you are when the outbreak occurs, theres always a "safe" zone somewhere-which usually turns out to be bogus. If your in the city, get to the country. If your in the country, get deeper in. If your deeper in, you probably dont have internet access so you wont read this anyways.
