While I realize there are threads containing posts that somewhat cover this, I never came across this.
APC does not manufacture USB power pack batteries any longer. This is known. Since November of 2008 they have been out of production. That being said, the warranty replacement for such is now invalid. This is a warning to all considering purchasing an APC USB power pack. (UPB10 or other)
This company ceased to produce these after having such widespread problems with their Li-Ion sourced batts inside. After reading many many threads concerning such, and researching quite a bit, I decided to give them a shot. I got two. That was around the time that many had purchased, and the first sales were happening at Frys. Not soon after that, the horrible reports started pouring in. Many, Many defective APC power packs were amassed here..
My first unit died within a week. Worked fantastic up until that point, though keep in mind, it was used very minimally during that week. Just quit working during a vape session. Remained cold there-after.
The second UPB10 lasted only two days of heavy use. When its first charge had subsided (after full initial charge) it was put on charge, and its indicator displayed as if it was 3/4 charged and flashing. When I attempted to power it, it would not power on again..
By this time it was past Fry's warranty period. So it went on to APC itself. I spent a long time on the phone with CS. The woman repeated the information of the cease production of all that area of product, as of Nov '08. Of course no more product was able to be provided as they had stopped making such. I could not get credit or refund, due to it being a "third party purchase".
The woman offered me a cheap Power strip surge protector in place of my battery packs !!?? WTF? She insisted it was the only thing she could possibly do for me. I asked for a superior to speak with. She informed me her supervisor was conveniently away, Interesting..
Oh did I mention that they wanted me to still RMA the batteries, original packaging, Frys invoice, and chargers/cords, At my expense!!??
So not only were they not going to replace my batteries, or credit me in any way monetarily for my losses, but they wanted me to pay to send them all back! Then I would get a shatty random surge protector??? She couldn't even assuredly tell me the clamping voltage or Joule rating! I wouldn't trust that piece o' to conduct regular alternating current, let alone protecting/grounding expensive equipment from voltage spikes!
Bottom line, Dont buy APC.
