Hi All,

Came across Li-ion battries on ebay, Panasonic NCR-18650B

[h=1]Panasonic NCR18650B 3400mA Li-ion Rechargeable Original batteries.[/h]
(Not pasting the ebay link as, i do not want to break any rules.), PM me if you need the link or just search the above text in google, you'll get it.

My question is, are these safe to be used with mech mods (without 2cent fuse). how about VAMOs, Provari & Evics

Any info is appreciated.

Thanks
LF

For Mech Mods if using those batteries you really should use a fuse or a kick.
Without then you are using the Mech Mod as an un-protected device, and when it goes wrong it will just blow up in your face..... safety first...

For Vamos, eVics and such devies then they are protected devices with built in protection, so they are fine to use with them.....

I'm using one in my eVic right now and it's been great. Just make sure you go into the settings after you insert it and change the battery setting to 3400Mah.
Also have another one in a Kamry k100 mechanical and no problems there either. They seem perfect to me.

As per my post a few posts above, they are fine on such as an eVic, but with a Mech Mod, yes they work, no in a way you won't get any problems, But when you do get a problem and the battery explodes and takes away half your mouth/face, then that is a big problem.
Safety is the key, and you need to be safe when using Mech Mods....

Those batteries should NOT be used in VV/VW devices or mech mods. They might work fine and perform well in your device, but do you really know what is going on inside the device?

VV/VW devices use pulse width modulation to in order to operate. These pulses can drain the battery at rates as high as 9 amps. Not good for a battery with a max discharge rate of 6.8A.

The protection features of the device are NOT the same as having a protection circuit on the battery and should never be justification for using unprotected ICR batteries!

I was under the impression that Panasonic and AW batteries were some of the best. Why not use them in a mechanical mod?

T

They are quality brands and they have different types of batteries. AW IMR's are good for anything, Panasonic CGR18650CH and NCR18650PD are High Drain Batteries as well. These are all designed to be able to handle high amperage applications. Panasonics are a bit tricky as the model numbers for batteries that are and aren't good for high drain applications are very close.

Good to know - thanks.

i am the guy that when starting thought all 18650s were the same, same size etc! How wrong i was!

T

Same here, then I thought the difference was only protected and unprotected. Now anytime I consider a new battery, I look up the max current drain, max charge current, operating temp range, voltage drop range and rate, etc. Then I stick with what I know works lol.

Never ever fully discharge, that will ruin them. Much better to charge often.

^True.
It's wise to put it on charge when the bat is half-way or two-thirds depleted. And that u'd know with the difference in vape quality it doles out. However, when new to vaping it might be difficult to assess that... so here's what I do:

- 18650
My above 18650 Pannys give me "a day" easily. A fully charged one, popped in the morning, lasts me till I'm up for supper after returning home, without any degradation in vape quality. That's about 14-16 hrs. However I replace them before leaving office. And put them to charge imdt on returning home. That's just 8-10 hrs. of runtime.

- 18350
My Efest IMR 18350 800mAh V2 gets me thru a 'work-day' easily. A fully charged one, popped in the morning, lasts me until end of office time, without any degradation in vape quality. That's about 8-9 hrs. However I replace them during lunch. And put them to charge imdt on returning home. That's just 4-5 hrs. of runtime.

*Ps.: As it's not wise to fully discharge them - it's not wise to keep them "fully uncharged" either for long. Charge them asap.

[Announcer voice] On this installment of Battery BustersTM: Is the newest, trendiest, battery really the best? Stay tuned for more...

Ok, now that I got that out...what is best? Best for you? Best for someone else? Best for everyone? Best for mech's? Best for VV?

There is not a single answer that covers all of those questions. "Best" is reserved for a very narrow scope with a specific use on a specific PV for a specific person. There are a handful of batteries that will perform very well over the entire spectrum, but "best" needs to be specific.

So lets take a look at how they perform...

CGR18650CH 2250mAh vs NCR18650PB 2900mAh

3A discharge = ~1.3Ω coil in a mech mod, or ~10W on a VV or VW device.

Most won't vape a mech mod down below 3.5V so anything below 3.5V should be ignored. They are pretty similar with the NCR18650PB having a slight advantage.

On a VV/VW device the NCR18650PB has a decent run-time advantage if you run it down to the PV's low voltage cutoff of 3.2V.

Now lets turn up the heat...

CGR18650CH 2250mAh vs NCR18650PB 2900mAh @ 7A

7A = ~.6Ω coil on a mech mod.

CGR18650CH has a moderate advantage in holding a higher voltage under heavier load. The NCR18650PB shows (IMO) a slightly disturbing plateau @ 3.6V. Typically this happens when the battery is being pushed close to it's limit (chemically) and once the cell gains some heat the chemical process improves resulting in the plateau.

Old and forgotten? AW IMR 1600mAh vs NCR18650PB

AW IMR 1600mAh holds much better voltage under heavy load. Meaning your mech mod will have more run-time before you hit the point where you typically change to a fresh battery.

So the answer to what is the best battery? There is no correct answer. But if you can narrow it down to your specific use, then the correct answers will start to appear. The current trend, or the latest and "greatest" may not be the correct answer. Sometimes "Old and forgotten" might be a better choice.

In the context of this thread:
-The NCR18650PB would perform very well in a VV/VW device that is limited to 15w or in a mech mod with a >1.3Ω coil.
-In a Mech mod with a <1.3Ω coil. The old and forgotten AW IMR 1600mAh performs great and is readily available from many retailers. However, there is also the Samsung INR18650-20R 2000mAh that will outperform the AW 1600 across the board...but it is not so readily available.
