VaporPete,

Why do you need me to look up these facts for you?..why don't you do a little research from the info I provided on already..

Here I will get you started:

For example,

Many people thought that the Bible was wrong in its description of springs on the ocean floor and they held on to their disbelief for some 3,000 years. Until 1977. Deep water exploration had been underway for nearly 60 years by this time, but ocean springs were still unknown and undiscovered until 1977. Then with only 5% of the ocean floor explored, Lewis Thomas (The Medusa and the Snail) wrote that scientists found springs in the ocean off the coast of Ecuador, and they found them at an ocean depth of 1.5 miles! They contained super heated water of about 450 degrees

Here is your UNbiased reference to back this up Exploring the deep ocean floor [This Dynamic Earth, USGS]

There are many Bible Facts foretold before "man" finally discovered them for himself later. Things that only GOD could know with the limited capabilities men had back in those days.

Like I said before, do your own research..and try not to be too "shocked" ;)

I~ for one~ don't think you look like a jerk. I have debated this a lot over the years- I can play devils advocate and channel the inner want-to-believer in me and debate you pretty well I bet. But I wont win, because my logical non-believer side will eventually cave. lol
(I sound like I have MPD or something...):p
I have heard some very valid religious arguments, and have seen people have conversations without being ugly too. But its just not the norm, mostly its just arguing. But I always hope someone will say something to cement my thoughts on one side or the other.

Thanks TG.
Heres my thing, yes, this can be debated for ever. And yes the debate will never be won. Well, I think someday it will. But I was on the fence once too. I have a huge problem with why someone would blindly believe something. When I read, did my research, talk to people etc. it became PAINFULLY obvious what the truth is. I really want to know what makes a person throw out rational thinking. Thats not meant to belittle either. It IS irrational. It would be irrational for an adult to believe in santa. I will never sway a believer, but like them if I plant a seed maybe it will grow.
Untold thousands have died in our lifetimes in gods name, millions are put to horrible deaths in the bible itself, and it is done so at the very command of god! There are thousands of people right now as we speak, who are emptying their bank accounts, not funding their childrens future education, not giving to charity because there is a wack-job of a man on a nationally syndicated radio program who has said the end of days is coming in 2011. Are you F-ing kidding me??????? So its because of this and a hundred more reasons, that I will debate those who make claims.
Thats it....
My best,
-VP

What I hate is that you can be made to feel as if you are some kind of 'Bad' person if you aren't religious and I know I am one of the good guys! :)

Who said you were a "bad" person if you weren't religious? Heck, even if you ARE religous you are still "bad"...There is no such thing as a "good" person..

We are all FULL of sin, no matter how hard we try, we could never be considered "good" in the eyes of GOD. He is perfect and we could never measure up to his glorious standards... that is exactly why he sent Jesus, to be our sacrifice, paying the penalty for our sinfulness and conquering death so we could also live forever.

Penalty for sins=death
We all have sinned so we should all die but we don't have to b/c Jesus made that sacrifice for us. All you have to do is believe that and you too can live forever!

Remember, there is NO SUCH THING AS A GOOD PERSON
Being GOOD doesn't get you into heaven

John 3:16
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

VaporPete,

Why do you need me to look up these facts for you?..why don't you do a little research from the info I provided on already..

Well it isnt so much that I need you to look up anything, its that you provided a christian website to prove christianity.

Here I will get you started:

For example,

Many people thought that the Bible was wrong in its description of springs on the ocean floor and they held on to their disbelief for some 3,000 years. Until 1977. Well, if you flip the coin a thousand times, its bound to land on your call. But at least you provided a valid link. Its interesting to me, and always has been, that when science works in the christians favor, its "proof" of the bible. When science refutes a christian claim, its because science cant prove god. But anyway, I didnt know that the bible mentioned self sustaining, mircobacteria that created enough heat to survive by that alone and not sunlight. I am indeed shocked.

There are many Bible Facts foretold before "man" finally discovered them for himself later. Things that only GOD could know with the limited capabilities men had back in those days.

Like the flat earth... ?;)

Like I said before, do your own research..and try not to be too "shocked" ;)

And as I've said before, I've done my research. the only thing that shocks me is why people still believe.
My best,
-VP

Thats good! So do I as I hope you can tell. Btw, I am in no way trying to belittle you. I hope you know that. Devils advocate? Yes.

PS: and your avatar would be voted the sexiest, if there were a poll. Hmmm.... new thread in the future??? LOL!

I hope I don't offend anyone here, I'm genuinely puzzled about Abrahamic idolatry teachings.

Some Christians worship effigies of saints and apostles, is that idolatry? What about the worship of a cross or crucifix?
Kate..as long as you are on the big 10 (or was Mel Brooks right---15?).
Doesn't "Thou shalt not put other Gods before me" acknowledge that there ARE other Gods? Not just one?

By the deep diving bathysphere, Alvin, co-designed by my father, who passed away recently. Just an aside note.

I don't know Jim, I suppose it depends on who wrote that and what their intentions were. If they said Gods with a capital rather than lower case that might also change the point.

It's all too much messing around with historical fact, myth, legend, invention and semantics for me now. I think the simplest, least authoritarian philosophies are the easiest to justify - Buddhism makes the most sense to me usually.

The Greek, Hindu and Scandinavian pantheons are the most interesting and entertaining to me. Monotheism is very boring and is usually modelled on a straight, white, able bodied, male example. Too much social control and politics but not enough sound science for me.

I agree. I'm anti-semantic, too>

this from pleaseconvinceme.com along with other arguments

'When one examines the writings of the Hindu, Buddhist or Greek pagan worships, for example, one finds clear reference to the concept of the earth being held up by a man, elephant, catfish, or some other physical support.'

Greek mythology, for example, claims that the god Atlas was holding the earth on his shoulders. But our Bible makes a remarkably sophisticated claim, that '[God] hangeth the earth on nothing.' What a remarkable statement of fact, especially considering the competing primitive notions we’ve already looked at! The earth is suspended in space. Nothing is holding it up. Job wrote about the same time the Hindu Scripture was written, so how did Job know this scientific fact? Only God could have revealed this to Job.

Well if there is an all powerful god ....its about time He/She/It told me what exactly it is they want from me....because I am certainly not going to be listening to other 'peoples' 'beliefs' on what He/She/it wants ....and nor am I going to rely on something I read in a book.
He could start by striking down congress/parliament/the lawyers and shout out, worldwide, WRONG!!!!!

Ironically- it is said that it(the bible) is responsible for majority of people becoming atheist and agnostic. Also ironical, atheist and agnostics always seem to know more about the bible than most Christians I have met.
