If one wants to hear God speak to them they need to have faith that he does in fact exist. To strengthen one's faith, faith comes by hearing and that is hearing the word of God which comes from the same book that you do not want to rely on.

So if that is the case, how do you expect to hear from him?

Many times when people hit rock bottom and they cry out to him with faith, he does answer.

People that can actually hear God talking to them always scare me.

I heard a voice once in my head, it was crystal clear, a woman's voice. It was appropriate too, I was at a relaxation class and the voice said 'relax' in a very soothing tone. I am a paranoid schizophrenic.

I know a woman who heard voices of three young men. Unfortunately these were the voices of people who had assaulted her years before and had triggered mental illness.

I wouldn't be scared of you Kate Any voices in your head would have their work cut out telling you what to do!:)

Very sorry to hear that about the woman you know, that must be terrible for her.

It must be a torment to hear voices that are hostile or otherwise distressing.

I wonder how many people who think they are hearing god are really psychotic. Certainly a lot of religions require acceptance of unlikely, unusual beliefs.

My favourite is still Buddhism, I've never heard any genuine teachings be harmful, unhealthy or be shown wrong. Reincarnation is still a bit of a stretch for me to accept without some evidence though.

All I have to say is:

1.Where was this discussion while I was taking Philosophy of Religion last semester?????

2. The Bible is an "anthology" if you will, and incomplete at that. The Council of Nicea (imperfect men of this world that some would argue were inspired by God, yet others would say, were corrupted by power) decided which books would be included in the Christian Bible, and which would be excluded and considered "heretical".

3. One can neither prove nor disprove the existence of God. So it becomes a matter of CHOICE (that is the "free will" part of it.) and neither choice should be condemned by either side.

4. Follow your heart or your head whichever you choose. We all live in glass houses so keep the stones in your pockets, there are greater problems in this world that require our attention. Share your views. Find counsel and comfort among those who share your beliefs.

Ironically- it is said that it(the bible) is responsible for majority of people becoming atheist and agnostic. Also ironical, atheist and agnostics always seem to know more about the bible than most Christians I have met.
Gee Does that mean perhaps that they are better informed? More curious? And yet still are not convinced?

Q: for all of you. How old were you when you stopped believing in Santa Clause?...And for those of you who are going to say that you still do, I guess O.J. never killed anybody, right?

See....you are just as intolerant as you accuse the "believers" of being.

Snarky, leads to angry, leads to hate, leads to war.

But, I defend your right to express your opinion and to make whatever choice you make based on the information you have.

The absence of evidence is not evidence of proof! But since you can't see, hear, touch God he probably doesn't exist. How can you disprove that God is a hermaphrodite rabbit? Or a bowl of spaghetti?

Snarky? I must have a different definition of that than you do. Sorry.

A lot of Zen teachers reject reincarnation :). The Dalai Llama and Buddha himself calls for the rejection of any theory that is disproved by science - I think all Buddhist teachers that continue to cling to reincarnation are doing it to maintain their appeal to the general population, who fear death.

I can't disprove or prove it. That's my point. It's a choice.

And your statement "The absence of evidence is not evidence of proof" applies to both sides of the argument.

Care to address any of my specific points?

Cheers

I believe in the sharing of ideas and information. That is ALWAYS a good thing.

I AM against judging a person because of their belief, regardless what the position they've chosen. It's not my place. (Glass houses, stones etc.).

"I like chocolate ice cream. It is the best. Nothing tastes as good as it."

;)Prove me wrong.;)

EDIT: The discussion of religious beliefs is a great thing. People learn from every discussion. What is distressing to me is how quickly it degenerates into an "Us vs. Them" argument by both sides.
If one has enough confidence in their position, they are able to calmly state their position and move on and not feel threatened by those who disagree and present an alternate view.

May I disagree with you. I do not CHOOSE my beliefs, and apparently, neither do you, so it seems obvious that it is NOT a choice.
Just one opinion.

Of course you may disagree.
We all have choices, including choosing not to choose.;)

I don't understand your position though. Are you telling me that your beliefs are subconscious and preprogrammed within you? You have no control and do not decide based on information you read and your experiences whether you believe in something or not?

If I didn't create you myself I wouldn't have believed it. :(

BTW my registration "captcha" was "pieces peace" in that order. OMG (can I really say that?) I thought that was pretty cool, even if I do say so myself. :D

See you around (you're supposed to say "Not if I see You first". I wish. I wait. You see, I was first but at least you could try... I specialize in wiggle room, benefit of the doubt, you know or do you?

Pieces or Peace? Still waiting...

BTW, I won't wait forever, even though I could if I want too. Peace. Got it? :thumb:
