Well, curiosity got the better of me and I tore down one the coils I just received from VAPENW on Thursday. They are indeed the new all cotton coils from Aspire. I could not tell the difference from the older coil (also unused and fresh out of the package) just by looking at them from the top with the screen removed. There might be a very, and I mean very, slight difference in the texture towards the middle of the wicking material but I would not be able to differentiate the old coil from the new just by looking. It was interesting that the new coil is much harder to remove from the housing and is packed in much tighter, but that doesn't help in identifying the coil difference. Not counting the outside wrap of wicking material that goes right against the juice holes in the housing there are 3 layers of wick in the old coils (2 being the mystery material and 1 layer that front faces the coil of cotton) and the new coil has 5 layers of cotton. Haven't used one yet and will try that next, but at least the curiosity monkey is off my back... lol. Good job to VAPENW for sending me the newest coils. I don't have the box that the old style coils came in, so I have no idea if there is a difference there. But I wish there was a clear way to tell the difference. Now to test the coil for vape quality.

Also, as an update. I've been vaping one of my tanks with my horizontal coil and it's pretty much just as good as these new cotton heads. I think it's going to boil down to whether I want to pay for heads or just build my own.

Thats very good news and thanks for sharing your findings!! Makes me feel even more confident that the ones I'm using now from KindeyPuncher are cotton. Not that I really doubted it since thats how they were sold to me and Mrs.MOJO tested one she got from there too. Its just so weird how Aspire has chosen not to announce or identify the new cotton heads from the old ones. Its just going to take some time for me to feel completely at ease with the new heads after avoiding these like the plague for so long!

I've been curious what the clones are using. I remember on the Aspire data sheet the material in question was listed as patented. What did they find to replace it or did they just say "screw it" and used all cotton?

It seems the clones are only using a ceramic paper (or something like that) and the outer sheath. There is no cotton encasing the coil at all, I'm so glad I never used these. I took one look at the machining and how sloppily they were put together and relegated them to the spare parts pile. The wicking has the crumbly/flakey quality the ceramic paper has, so my guess is that's what they're using but I cannot say for certain.

Now that I've had a bit of vaping time with the new cotton Atlantis coil this is what I've found. There was definitely a breakin period for the flavor. The 1st half tank had a very off taste and was not what I expected from a juice I'm very familiar with, Artist's Collection Samba Sun. It wasn't that it was muted, there was a strange flavor introduced that was not very appealing. This was also verified with a new OCC coil in a Kanger mini ST side by side on 2 regulated mods. The Kanger was set at my preferred 20watts and the Atlantis was set to 25watts (which was the same wattage I set on the old Atlantis coils). The Kanger mini took about 5 puffs to become a vey good flavor, which is normal for me. The Atlantis took about a 1/2 tank before the strange flavor disappeared and the flavor then became very good. This was with the stock Atlantis 2ml tank, so it really was not a lot of vaping. But I was wondering if the strange flavor would disappear until finally the Samba Sun tasted normal and quite good. I did try 30watts and 35watts on the new Atlantis coil and that didn't make any difference in noticing the off taste, but there was no burning either.

This juice is a 70VG and had no wicking issues. I haven't tried any other juices yet and have no experience at this point with higher VG, but it is encouraging that the wicking was very good and very consistent.

The flavor, after break in, was perhaps just a little less crisp when compared to the Kanger. But still very good. I think it is a bit better than the old Atlantis flavor wise and closer to the Kanger mini flavor. The downside of the Kanger coil for me is that I only get 3 to 4 days on those coils and I hope the new Atlantis coils come closer to the 10 to 14 days I used to get. But for me flavor is more important than longevity, so we'll see how that goes.

All in all, break in not withstanding, the coil works very well and is something I can live with and enjoy I think. BTW, the coils at VAPENW are considerably cheaper than other places I've seen them at and were 14.95 for a 5 pack. So the same price as the older coils.

I'll be anxious to hear what others think of the new coil's performance.

Original Aspire coils didn't have the cotton wrap either. The addition of the cotton is relatively recent. So I guess the clone makers are not keeping up with the changes.

I just watched a video somewhere that the eleaf melo coils are organic cotton coils and fit and work fine in the Atlantis. A few websites have these coils. eciggity being one.

Well that is very interesting! And Kudos to Phil for asking the questions and getting answers. Overall it sounds like its better than the Aspire Atlantis original heads. Based on what they are saying, the material that is breaking apart is the same as normal silica wick in a different form. So if you the provided info shows that is does have the same properties as normal silica wick and you are ok using silica then the Delta 2 should be fine for you. I personally prefer not using silica either and as long as I have the option I prefer natural organic cotton. I have a feeling the "organic man-made cotton" is that same thing Aspire is using in their new heads. I suppose some investigation into what they are adding to the organic cotton when they re-create it into the new material that can be used for mass production may be something worth looking into. Hmmmm..

Personally? No scientific evidence to any of it but...

Its not much a mystery with their disclosure. As I said, I applaud an honest vendor.

While its a lot less material and they do make a point about the particle size, I think any material that isn't bound and made of fiberglass in an atomizer is an undue risk - I won't use it unless there is a reliable study that says its safe. I think if the material was bound I would be less hesitant about it.

On the plus side, anything that ......s burning is an advance in my opinion, but, if you manage your atomizer and change out the wick or the assembly regularly and don't dry burn, combustible byproducts are minimized to a level I am comfortable with in comparison to smoking.

I'm glad you posted this as this is exactly what I experianced with the nw coil

FYI I'm on week 2 with the Arctic sub ohm (organic cotton) .2 and .5 heads and it's a real winner
