Yes, runners eat bananas after running marathons. I personally take potassium tablets each day, because my legs cramp at night when I'm sleeping.

Any idea if it helps with restless leg syndrome? My 18 year old complains of RLS but I do NOT want her on the common prescription meds for it.

Wow, thanks for the tip about potassium-pills Walrus (and the Op for telling about banana's of course).
My trouble is that I'm quite allergic to banana's (hate that because I love them, but alas) - so knowing there are potassium-pills will really help me out.

I think the acidity of bananas would counteract the positives of the potassium. Marie was right about the sodium bicarbonate. 1/4 tsp. of baking soda in a small glass of water. There's also an electrolyte formula called 40000 volts, as the major minerals are all alkaline.

I would be careful with potassium supplements. They can be very dangerous. It's one of the few minerals you should only take a very small amt. of unless under the direction of a doctor. If someone were really low on potassium, taking a bunch of potassium at once can cause palpitations as well.

Lorraineg57: My son had RLS & OJ worked. I have had it myself occasionally, and in my case calcium helped. Maybe some calcium fortified OJ?

I'm in the gym 5 days a week and eat 2 bananas a day to help with soreness/healing. I haven't noticed any extra soreness from lactic acid due to vaping. It could just be i'm just used to being sore all the time lol. I personally feel the potassium and multivitamins help me. Besides who doesn't like to make an immature joke when your buddys eating a banana :)

Two words..."glaucoma medicine" It cures alot of things ;) But on a realistic side, I used to suffer RLS as a teen and into my early twenties. My best method of treatment was watching my diet. No caffeins after 2 pm...no sweets after 7 pm...

Really? I thought quinine wasn't safe to take on a regular basis. Can't remember why. But I do remember there being side effects from it.

Well, actually tonic water which contains quinine, an 8 oz. glass before bed. I'm sure it's a relatively small amount so I'm sure an 8 oz. glass a day wouldn't hurt. I couldn't get her to drink it though. Truth be told, it made me gag too....:p

Oh, ok. That's different I think! I actually use to love tonic water when I was a kid. Don't know why, lol. But I can understand the gag factor.

Potassium tablets are sold anywhere you find supplements. I pick mine up at Walgreen's. They are 99mg strength. One each day just before bed fixes me up just right. Just like anything else... if you take it as directed, no worries. Anything can be harmful in excess.

As far as bananas go... if the acidity offset the benefit of potassium, I think people would have caught on to that a long time ago, and we wouldn't spend hours upon hours cutting up bananas to hand out to runners during/after races. I think it's proven itself by now.
