Agreed. Time out, additional chores, taking away privileges all have their place...as does a spanking IMHO. One size fits all doesn't apply to discipline.
This whole thing reminded me of my favorite spanking story. This is going back like 12 years but I swear it is true.
At the time, my wife had a casual friend she would go out with and she had a son about 11. This kid was an undisciplined little hellion and if he is not sitting in jail somewhere I would be seriously surprised. Not unless something really changed in his life/upbringing.
I certainly
do blame his parents, well for one, they were one of those "I never hit my kid" believers and that is fine if you follow up with disciple and they listen/obey you. This kid DID NOT! He was an mean kid that talked back and did not listen to a thing his parents said. Their parenting skills were abysmal at best.
Anyway... the day before me and a few fellas went "fishing" You know talking about fish and drinking beer. When we got back it was late. I unloaded the boat and
threw all the empty bottles on the back lawn so I could cover the boat. The next day my wife's friend was over and they were going to go shopping but that boy was at the house too. I guess her husband was out and she had no babysitter. Before she even asked I was like, "NO FREAKING WAY am I watching that boy!!!" She begged and pleaded. I finally submitted, after she agreed that I would watch him if I had permission to do as I pleased with him if he "acted up". No big deal deal keep (3) kids busy and running around for a few hours. I can do this, I thought. They ran out of stuff they wanted to do inside in like 30 minutes so I sent them outside to play in the fenced in back yard while I finished cleaning up the kitchen.
Not five minutes later my kids came running in with this shocked look both talking at the same time about how "they did not do it". I said, "Do what?" Hell boy had taken the empty bottles from the yard and smashed them against a rock. The "you just watched him" speech would have to wait. I marched out there and the kid has a bottle in his hand!
I said something like "What in the hell do you think your doing!?! You will be picking up every single piece of glass I see and I will be personally supervising you. Do you understand?"
Hell boy, "NO"
(My children's eyes grow wide)
I said something to the effect of, "I can guarantee you will be picking up glass here shortly."
Then he had the gumption to say, "No I am not. What are you gonna do about it?!"
I said, "I will spank you if I have to. Is that what you want?"
He laughed and pulled down his sweat pants and underwear
(My children gasping in disbelief)
(Hell... I paused in astonishment)
Hell boy said, "Go right ahead" and put his hands on his knees while looking at my kids and laughing
(I gritted my teeth)
(I
licked my hand - nice and sloppy)
I gave him one
good swat on the ...
He stood up on his tippy toes, speechless, tears running from his eyes
(My kids smirking with the "WTH was he thinking?" faces)
Me, "You want another one or do you want to start picking up glass now?"
He sniffled around picking up glass for a good 20 minutes my kids helping. I never had a "lick" of problem with that kid from that day forward because he knew I was 100% serious about anything I said. But, I was glad when they moved away.
