The 4Nine isn't considered a "beginner" because of the design required to make it short... that being the drop-in, shoulder retained button, the thin magnetic interface and the hybrid pinless style 510 ring.
On clones, the magnets tend to be weak and fail frequently... particularly if resistances used are low, there is poor conductivity (from button to tube - due to sloppy machining tolerances), and the magnets get hot.

A genuine 4Nine.

Zillions of 4Nine counterfeits, at a dozen price points, have been sold... probably because of the clean style, small size and magnetic button. What percentage of that zillion have issues is unknown. Even the authentics have had issues... but Tarsius stands behind those, for the most part.

Ultra short mods, with few exceptions, can be problematic... if not made with close and well considered tolerances. The "Red Rod", although not as common as the 4Nine, because to my knowledge it's not been cloned yet, may be one of the more reliable short mods... and perhaps the "Fortune" as well, although I've not received my Fortune yet and can't say for sure.

I just read a post about the 4nine not being a beginner's mod. So of course that got me wondering, which ones are? And which ones would not be recommended?

I'm interested in mechanicals. I've studied battery safety and understand DC electronics very well.

Launcher (Rai vapes) clone. Telescopic, so easy adjustment. Copper contacts, so hits like a beast. Recessed button with excellent throw, so you won't have to worry about locking rings or accidental firing. SS with smooth threads, so will last forever.

The stingray is a pretty good starter as well as the aforementioned nemesis and magneto.

I have a stingray clone coming. I first bought an "Infinite" on ebay, but that seller sent me some other clone, and I sent it back. Ordered again from Fluid Vapes and its on the way. I'm aware it fires easily if unlocked.

Speaking of stingrays, will JD Tech restock the authentic, or is it no longer available? I found a few places that had it, but for around $50 more than JD Tech was selling it for.

Surprised few if not any people mentioned the King or Chi You.

Nemesis, Chi You, King, or any other mech mod similar in style (Poseidon, Humming Bird, Paragon, etc) are excellent. I prefer my nemesis personally.

Hades is a great starter for 26650 mods too. Floating center pin means very little to no adjustment. just pop in a MNKE (or if youre lucky enough to find a sony vtc 26650) and keep it above 0.4 ohms, youre solid.

my 2 cents anyways

I think the Atomo v2 clone is worth checking out as is the slojo clone. I really like the recessed, magnetic switch.

My 4nine clone is functional but I wish I would have gotten something else.

I personally think that stainless steel is the way to go when you're beginning. Copper and Brass clones can be a pain in terms of durability and polishing.

I think JD's current model is the X.

Super-T makes an excellent, inexpensive authentic mod also.

I want a "workhorse" pretty bad.

JD Tech showed the X and black copper on their website. The black copper was what I wanted.

I think the Super T workhorse is going to be my next one :)

What about K100 or K101?

Outdated, almost obsolete mod. Bad call.
A few years ago,.....maybe. People recommended it because it was an inexpensive LEGIT mech.

Now it's the most cloned mech on earth, and it's design features are old.

There are much better options at the same price point.
It's not even a good choice for someone seeking a telescopic mod.

Bad call.

Was that really necessary?

Now it's the most cloned mech on earth

This makes no sense as an argument against something? Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Besides if being cloned a lot is a bad thing, Nemesis and Stingrays must be terrible mods. I see more clones of them than anything else.

it's design features are old

Fair enough, but "old" doesn't = "bad".

There are much better options at the same price point.

If I remember correctly I paid about $20 for mine (not a clone) at a local B&M. Show me other legit (not clone) mechs that sell for $20 new.

The K100 and K101 are easy to use, legit, cheap, and safe mechs. They are a low cost, low risk entry point into the world of mechanicals. Paired with a Sig S or Igo W, you've got a decent setup at a minimal price of entry.
