+1 on starting with a 1.8 ohm coil. You will need an ohm reader or DMM to measure your build BEFORE you put it on a battery and fire it.

Here are a few links for you regarding building coils and getting the resistance just where you want it:
1. Steam Engine
2. Coil Toy Calculator

If you are using a regulated mod (and not sub-ohming), some of this may not apply to you YET. But Baditude has many helpful blogs regarding rebuildables and mods.

Battery Basics for Mods contains a list of recommended high-drain IMR or IMR/hybrid batteries for use in a mechanical mod.

Deeper Understanding of Mod Batteries describes what an IMR, IMR/hybrid, and ICR battery are. Explains what the letters & numbers mean on batteries.

Purple Efest Batteries Not As Advertised

Concerning battery chargers: Any charger from Pila, Xtar, Nitecore, or the Efest LUC will be appropriate for your application. The more money you invest in a charger, the more features you'll get. Considering that batteries are the MOST IMPORTANT investment you will make in your vape setup, it makes sense to use a high quality charger.

The previous recommendation of reputable vendors to purchase batteries and chargers are highly recommended to avoid getting counterfeit batteries, which is a growing problem.

How to Spot Fake Sony Batteries

Sony Real vs Fake.jpg

Only buy batteries from a reputable supplier (not ebay or Amazon) as there are many counterfeit batteries being sold. Here are several reputable battery suppliers in the US.

* RTD Vapor
* Illumination Supply
* Lighthound
* Orbtronics

If you're doing a micro coil, which you should :) use a 1/16" drill bit, 30g K wire, about 9 wraps will get you 1.8 ohms. You should definitely have a meter to double check resistance, and to check for shorts though. As for wicking material, I'd go for cotton, cotton balls are fine if that's what you have, with cotton you want just enough to fill the coil, don't over pack it. I personally like the japanese cotton pads like Koh Gen Do or Shiseido, they're just easier to work with, and wick better than standard cotton fluff.

Enjoy!

im confused, how do i enter the all the numbers into the calculator when i only know i want a 1.8ohm coil? what gauge kanthal will work best? would the gauge change if i made dual coil? im trying to read and find the answers but i rather get direct answers for my needs. also i saw those pictures of the after effects of an exploding battery, damn im shook.. im still using a ego 510 threaded 1600mah aspire vv battery, will i be safe with this? i dont plan on upgrading my battery, i already have a huge dent in my wallet from previous products.hopefully i can slide and get some decent results

Use 4.2 for the battery voltage

Read through ALL of those links that Susan S provided and I'd go read ALL of Baditude's blogs before you go build anything - just to be safe. That's what I did.

It's not just about "building;" it's about know WHAT you're building and WHY you're building it, in order to be safe. If you read all that stuff first, you'll figure it all out and that means you'll understand what you're doing. I JUST got started, literally - I built my first dripper last night and did my first flavorful build this morning. So, I'm right ahead of you; and I had many of the same questions. But they all got answered by following the same links she (and Baditude) provided me.

Good luck & be safe!
