Oh, I'm behind fuel injection now, but only because it doesn't wash the cylinders with gas when it's cold, so the engine lasts longer. I've had a fuel pump go out on the highway. I drove it 10 miles to the nearest town by pouring gas in the carburetor bowl and driving until it ran out then repeat. When I got to the part store I change out the pump in 15 minutes in the parking lot and went on with my trip. Try that with fuel injection and the pump in the tank. Gas mileage isn't significantly different once the engine is warmed up. I had a 48 Ford pickup with flat head v8 that got 24mpg. Automatic transmissions usually waste around 5-10 miles per gallon, just so you don't have to move your arm. People who need precision shifting drive a manual. If someone leaves the lights on in a car with a standard, you just give it a push and go. I've had to change out a power window motor on every vehicle I've been around, for any length of time, that had them. I would rather manually roll up a window for years, it's not a big deal, than change 1 window motor.

I don't have a TV. I can find anything I want on the net. I embrace tech if it seems advantageous to me.

How the heck do you fire a dibi-sumpin with your pinky? Me, I use my thumb. :p

I use my dibis daily, but not exclusively. The gDNAs get more miles on them.

yeah, thumb pushes the button with pinky under the mod... when I say mash I mean mash, basically squeezing the mod hard between the thumb and pinky, the pinky takes the abuse with the edge of the mod digging into it :)

Greetings everyone, I have been lurking for a while and I must say there is some fantastic talent here. Does anyone know where I might buy some 6ml/18650 sized bottles locally? I am eager to start my first bottom feeder and I didn't plan accordingly. If I can't find any I will buy online and wait impatienly

Bunch of Luddites!

I own 6 DNA mods; three of them are well over a year old. I've had one failure; the original gDNA I built; it was a 30. At on point, I put the battery in backwards and let the magic smoke out of the board.

Yes, yes, I have mechs too, in case we ever get EMP'd.

My credit card statements will reflect that I'm the furthest thing from a Luddite  seems everything I own has an interactive AMOLED screen...I have thought about this more than once and I think a big reason I'm drawn to mechs is that they are simple, raw and utilitarian...same reason why I wear an analogue watch to see what time it is, why?...every every device I own has a digital clock sync'd to International Atomic Time.

When I sit back at the end of the day with a cocktail and a vape...the last thing I want staring in my face is another screen with the iridescent blue glow...I'll forgive my watch being a couple mins. slow and the in-consistent vape :)

I'm not against tech. I have MCSE, MCSA, and MCDBA certifications even though I use Debian Linux. I'm not trying to talk down anyone who is into tech. For myself I just think there is too much tech, just for the sake of tech. I am very utilitarian and everything has to earn it's keep. When I had a small yard I used a rotary push mower. I had the prettiest yard and I didn't think my little yard justified the expense overall of a power mower.

Hi all

Got my new toys in, mounted up and aligned. Alignment isn't perfect, but close. Next step is to figure out how to put something in the jaws of the vise to give material something to rest on so it is supported better.

If anyone has any tips Id love to hear them.

hopefully these pics don't come up sideways...

Thanks
Geo

I built a bottom feeder for my wife similar to my last build. Still exploring the concept. I really like the balance when held and the ease of squonking. This one is an individually fused parallel 18490s. I'm waiting on some copper thumb screws to come in, so, the stainless steel screws are just for the time being.

That's a good looking cross slide Geo...much lash in it?

Thanks Quigs... not too much backlash in it really. After researching a bunch of cross slide vises and finding all f them to be sub par, I stumbled onto this x-y table from Grizzly and paired it with an upgraded 4 inch vise. A little more $ than a cross slide vice but much more movement (5.5" x 12") and much more accurate.

Didn't even have to tear it down and lap the ways or anything... Pretty happy with it so far

Thanks,
Geo

just to add my 2 cts to the neverending 'mech vs reg' debate. I'm a regulated guy, for consistency but also because i like changing juices a lot and found that different juices called for different wattage, a regulated allows me to change juices and adjust the wattage versus redo the coil. Plus, I love to just plug the thing instead of constantly swap batteries :D

You want Grade 1.

Given your avatar, and the fact that no US airline has A380s in their fleet, I 'm guessing you're based in Europe, not the US?

I haven't ordered from them, but there's Grade 1 titanium wire available in Germany:
Titanium Wire - Zivipf Onlineshop

Ok it's not the first time (and I'm sure not the last) that your knowledge impresses me Ross. Of course you are very correct in saying that no US carrier operates the A380 hence your deduction is quite correct. I am however based somewhat further south than Europe. I work for Etihad Airways in the United Arab Emirates next to Dubai in Abu Dhabi. Been here for almost 10 years however I grew up in South FL.

Frankly if you have a supplier of grade 1 Ti Stateside I actually prefer to order from the US instead.

PS We start A380 flights from Abu Dhabi to NY in December this year (right now we operate that sector with our B777's) so if you're in NY I'm buying the drinks buddy :toast:

Here is that Avatar BTW

The closest I normally get to NY is the outskirts Philly, but that's not very far, and I've been meaning to meet up with a couple of the BF people who live in NYC at some point anyway. Maybe we can arrange something sometime when you're in town?

I first looked for Ti wire back last summer, when a certain Greek modder insisted it was the only "safe" wire to use and misrepresented a vendor's product as "pure" titanium, when it was in fact an alloy. At that point, the only sources I could find in the US were:

30 gauge from Rio Grande (this is a reputable jewelry supply house)

24 gauge from Amazon.

I bought both. I found the 24 to be a bit thick and stiff to work with, and too low a resistance to use with the mods that were available then (this was well before the DNA40 was released). The 30 gauge was fine, but oxidized like crazy if you got it too hot.

Of course the DNA40 will happily drive resistances low enough to have been previously unthinkable, and that makes the 24 gauge entirely useable. However, I still prefer the 30. My favored configuration is 3 strands of it tightly twisted together.

There's now also a guy on Etsy that sells various gauges, but I've not used him: UnkamenSupplies

PS: Here's the only aircraft I've ever been Captain of:

I don't think it's avatar worthy.

I clearly remember the exchange with that certain modder, I read every word you wrote and certainly didn't disagree with a word you said . Anyhow I did a test back then (in fact even before you had that exchange with him) of a sample he sent me and here his the photo from back then. On the left is before the burn and the right after the burn. The oxidation was a white powder which I think you know very well what it is.

This sample is NOT the one supplied by the modder's vendor, it was a sample of the first Ti that modder got. I later found out it was sourced by him from a supplier in China.

Thanks for the links, I'll order some grade1 and try it.

As for your beautiful Cessna 172 you should be proud, it brings back great memories. I learnt to fly in one just like that over 30 years ago and it's a great little aircraft. I envy you because I really miss fun flying
