As I see all the attacks that are being mounted against e cigs maybe we should start taking a different approach. What if we converted one MP to our side?

Take the example of Bev Oda, Federal Minister of International Cooperation.

She needs our help!!!!

Someone send her a starter's kit.

I'm serious, we need friends on the inside. Let's find a Canadian supplier out there willing to donate the kit, we'll get a delegation together, get to Ottawa and make the donation together with a "vape in" at the Minister's office. No media this will be a stealth operation.

I wonder who and how many other MP's and senators apart from Bev Oda that smoke that we could approach. There are 308 MP's and 105 Senators if we apply the Canadian percentage of 17% of the population that smoke then we could say that 52 36 MP's and 17.85 senators. The fraction applies to the MP's and Senators that are trying to quit

Next question is who are they????

I would gladly donate a kit myself if I was sure they wouldn't throw it in the trash.

Should we force them to use no-nic or will we be civilized and give them the 'real deal'?

Perhaps we should give them a carto of each so they can see the difference.

Keep the ideas coming. This could seriously lead to something!

Well, I know that Ed Holder for one is incapable of having an opinion that Steven Harper hasn't fed to him, so we'd have to get our illustrious PM on board somehow. :p

I think our best bet is Bev Oda. She'll be all over it if it's free. I'm interested to see what happens. Perhaps along with the kit we should send along some research, such as an abstract of Dr. Konstantinos Farsalinos' study on the cardiovascular effects of vaping versus smoking?

This is not a good idea to bring to fruition.....(although I like the creative thought and thinking outside the box.)

It wouldn't matter if each smokin politician had a provari shoved in their mouths, at the end of the day, they do what their party tells them to. There is a system that must be followed, these days no one acts upon anything unless there is a research team and a truck full of money at the end of the rainbow.

If you want to have a paper in writing that HC supports e-cigs, start a billion dollar fundraising program and begin taking research proposals. There is no other way.

Just my opinionated two cents. ;)

I don't think that we necessarily have to send them an actual device but certainly the part of this idea that is intriguing is getting them to drop the analogues. I know that when I finally found vaping and that it worked for me I was evangelical about it.

And smile n'shine, we don't need HC what we need are politicians. They can change the laws at a whim if you get right down to it. They do it all the time.

The trick is to maintain the position that this is a harm reduction strategy. They (politicians) blow soo much smoke out their ... about health care this, and health care that, that by exposing them as smokers they may just have no other choice but to take up vaping .... especially the hard core smokers like Bev Ota, 'cause I bet you none of the smoking cessation methods have worked for her.

Remember this would have to be low key, no media splash or media alert. They will do that of their own volition. We want to put one small hole in the dike, then another and so on. Our politicians are accessible, maybe not directly but through EA's, bureaucrats, etc.

Just think of it. A long session in the house, a long debate critical debate. The opposition figures Bev will have to duck out for a smoke, but she doesn't and shows no nicotine withdrawal. What everyone doesn't see is that she is stealth vaping at her seat in the Commons. The debate ends, the country is saved..........

What you've missed, Slo, is that they're not laws. There are no laws against the products we use, or the concentrations we use nicotine in. Thing is, we're talking about the government here, and they do whatever they want, with or without laws to back them up.

They would never have no other choice than to take up vaping. Think about the stupid crap politicians blow smoke up our asses about... Now, has it ever backed them into a corner before? No, because they don't care enough to let it.

The other thing that people seem to be missing is: who says any of these politicians even wants to quit smoking? We're making a very large assumption here.

I understand your interpretation SloHand, but all these politicians can't change the law on a whim, we live in an evidence based society. Parliament isn't going to pass a law because they can toot vapor! They need a logical and justified reason to do so. :)

How do you suppose the pharmaceutical companies have most of their items approved? Not through samples, but through research. Whether, the research is legit or not, is not for me to say, but that is how the system goes. That's my point and I'm sticking to it. ;)

The OP had a really interesting idea, but I'm not jumping on the band wagon for the reason above. Maybe a political friend can sit down for a tall glass of orange juice at a vape bar with Oda. lol OR....go for it and email Rick Mercer...dare him to get Oda to try an 808!!! :D

Re "The other thing that people seem to be missing is: who says any of these politicians even wants to quit smoking? We're making a very large assumption here." I will bet a Zenesis that I don't own yet that they would love to kick the habit. Always having to dodge the media (photographers) and relentless Hearth and Lung and Cancer and the list goes on appeals and harassment about smoking.

This is an issue they can get on the right side of.
