I leave mine plugged in, however it is on an outlet that is switched with the ignition. Once I shut my truck down, there is no power on that outlet.
Like any electronics, you can't 100% trust it not to fail (the truck's wiring). I have my radar detector on the same port, so it will get my attention if it fails to shut off.
