Buying new heads, burnt taste within the same day

So I have a Vamo v5 with a Protank 2 mounted on, I have bought 2.5ohm heads that have worked great in the past but today I bought a few 1.8 ohm heads and loaded up my 50/50 liquid and vaped for a good hour or two. I started off at 3.5 volts but I would notice a burnt taste then retreat to 3.4, 3.3 and so on till 3.0 where I can vape safely without a burnt taste but it is definitely not where I want to be vaping at.

I tried fixing it by removing the flavor wicks provided by kanger and put my own piece of 2.5mm silica wick on top and I still got the burnt taste. I also made sure I wasn't over tightening the coil head into the base, and the base into the tank. I know I shouldn't be getting a burnt taste a few hours after using a coil head, especially vaping at a safe 3.5 volts. Am I doing something wrong or could it be just a poorly assembled head?

(I also forgot I was using a different coil head before putting in my 1.8 which was a 1.5 I believe. It also had a burnt taste to it and I didn't empty out the juice when putting in the new 1.8 head. Could it be just the liquid inside the tank that has experienced burning or is that impractical?)

That happened to me last week. I was low on liquid, vaped through it. Not my most pleasant experience. I prefer a 2.2 ohm. They take longer to warm up. My juice doesn't tolerate anything much lower in ohms very well.

I wouldn't think that vaping at 3.5 volts max would burn out a 1.8ohm coil in a hour or 2 though... I dumped the tank and I'm doing a quick dry burn to see if that helps any.

Could be the juice. I would clean everything thoroughly and try a different juice. The rubber grommet could of got torched witch will cause a burnt taste. I have had a couple issues with Kanger heads myself, I buy a pack of 1.8ohm coils but they read 2.0 on my mod and the 2.2 ohms will read at 2.4 or even higher at times. I picked up an Aspire Glass BDC and I'm liking it much better than the kangers at this point but they seem like they would be a pain to rebuild the coils.

Hi and welcome!

That strikes me as an odd statement. Are you vaping for taste or because you think you should be vaping at a specific number?

3.5v with a 1.8Ω coil is 6.8 watts. That may seem low to you, but I have several juices that will get a burnt taste over 7 watts. Keep in mind, vaping is about flavor, not numbers. Another thing is that Kanger/EVOD heads often run hot. When I got my first Protank back in March, I thought the voltage recommendations Kanger had enclosed in the box were low, but they turned out to be pretty accurate. For 1.7-1.9Ω resistance, Kanger recommends 3.1-3.4v.

ETA: I missed that you said you were wrapping your own coils, so the last part of my post probably doesn't apply to you.

I'm thinking it was the juice that was exposed to the burnt coil from earlier. I cleaned out the tank and did a quick dry burn and everything seems to be okay at 3.6 volts for now. I sometimes do a quick pull or 2 without any power to make sure the juice gets through the 2.5 silica wick at the top of the coil to make sure the coil is saturated. I am thinking of getting a new tank, maybe the davide glassomizer since that seems like a good alternative to the kanger protank 2.

I thinking about trying one of these davide's out myself. I have heard a lot of good things about them and they use the same coil heads as the Aspires. Apire is putting out the Nautilus glass tank which holds 5ml of juice and has an airflow adjuster.

Where did you buy the heads? Not all heads are created equal...

My first experience with "Kanger" product was with two Mini Protanks I bought from Fasttech. I was underwhelmed. Two heads were crap right away. Dry hits, burnt taste, wicking issues.

I thought that Kanger was vastly overrated.

I later then bought heads from an "authorized Kanger reseller" and found out that it's most likely my Fasttech stuff was fake.

I have never had any issues with Kanger product. I've also been told by this reseller that the 2.5 ohm heads are the best. Back when I had my eGo batteries, I noticed the 2.5 ohm heads were firing too low. I asked the reseller to swap the heads for 1.8 ohm heads. He discouraged me from this because he said the 2.5 ohm heads were better and suggested I get a vv battery instead. I'm glad I did.

Point is, I have never had issues with authentic Kanger 2.5 ohm heads. After about 3 weeks I finally started to get some funky taste in one, and I simply dry burned the head and replaced the flavor wick with some more wicking material and it was back to brand new.

A dry burn on a protank head may not be the best of ideas. You'll more often than not just melt the rubber insulator, which leads to more burnt tastes.

I bought the heads from a local store here, it is pretty new and small time but when they bring out the heads, they always take them out of kanger boxes so I do believe they are authentic. I have bought 2.5ohm heads from the store in the past that were duds, I cant really expect every head from kanger to be perfect. I would have to agree with you that kanger is a bit overrated, it seems that every head I get always has a problem with it (dry hits, gurgling, burnt taste, hotspots, low load).

The protank has a tendency to run on the dry side with anything other than pg. I always found 2.2 to be the lowest the protank liked with sIlica. If you want to go lower, or any res for that matter, you have to be sure its wicking enough to keep up. Proper wicking at any ohm/ power level, will dramatically improve the taste. You should see air bubbles rising Into the tank every 2-4 vapes it not your not getting the best flavor and performance. Likely far shy of her abilities. Adjust amount of wick, and or modding the cup seal to find the right balance for 50/50... You can also try your hand at a cotton overwick too. It is much better. You just have to get the density of the cotton right. ( cup seal mods are for small / fine tuning adjustments when you need just a little more without pushing to the leaky side .)
