I'm a silicaphobe. After switching to cotton I no longer get scratchy throat. Once the silica is wet, it's not a problem. It the airborne stuff you have to worry about and it gets airborne easily and settles everywhere...drip tips, workstation, clippers, nostrils->throat-> and lungs, etc. It's just so small we hardly notice it but it's got to add up over time. Sorry to be a buzz kill but no silica for me.:)

Yikes, that is scary! Do you boil your cotton?

Do you boil it?

If you buy the sterile cotton you don't need to boil it. Just keep it away from any other odors. It does tend to pick up odors.

I did the silica because I got some free. Found that I would develop a scratchy throat and cough. Been only using cotton since.

For those out there; I would love to hear your favorite set-ups on a Reo with silica and Ekowool. size, wraps, ohms, etc...

I am continuing to experiment with cotton, as I can see its very popular, but so far I'm not a big fan.

Thanks in advance

I use most wick materials for my different devices,

I like cotton best, then ekowool, then SS Mesh, and then silica

Matter of fact, My genesis are running on microcoil with vertical cotton right this minute

Ekowool is pretty good, I use a 2 or 3 mm sleeves, I can wrap a microcoil directly in the ekowool while having inserted a thick needle or long screw bit inside, put in place, then remove

First few days in REO it's all I used, some 6~8 kanthal 27 on ekowool 2mm

Also, flavor advantage goes to cotton, but the 'wool can take any heat you want and still stay put, so a wick will last you weeks

I'm going to stop at CVS and pick up some of the organic cotton. I don't want to have to boil anything.....my wife tries to limit my access to her kitchen utensils :)

I've tried CVS sterile cotton, natural hemp yarn, natural bamboo yarn, and none of them give me the flavor of silica. They all add something to the flavor that I don't care for. I boiled all of them, and silica works the best for me. I'm not making a recommendation, I'm just stating what I've found over the last few of weeks of trying just about everything suggested here on the forum.
