Hi all Ive been a form lurker for months and would like to contribute to the conversations.

Anyways Ive been vapeing for 6 months now and love it but one thing that is bothering me is that we still call it a cigarette.
Its creates a direct link to real cigarettes and the media and other law makers are using that against us.
IMO vapeing is not smoking and shouldn't have the word cigarette in its name. What do you think?

Yes, yes we can. Cigarettes do indeed have a stigma in American culture. I typically just call it a vape. I rarely have to explain myself though. Most people seem to be fully aware of the differences between smoke and vapor and are genuinely interested in the device/process.

I think we, in the vaping community, need to graduate to a new phase - teaching. I'm relatively new to vaping (about 6 months) after smoking for 50 years. Before I took the plunge, I asked the "what's that" question and more often than not I was received with a snide or condescending response. I simply wanted to educate myself about a lifestyle change but was having trouble getting the benefit of first-hand experience. Many Vapers are way too thin skinned and defensive.

I work in a two person machine shop and my partner and I vape. A lot of customers ask "what's that?" and I smile and proudly say "That's my iStick20". This always gets one of three types of friendly conversations started:

1. "Oh, I have a Sigelei 150 [example]" - Now I know about this persons knowledge base and we might trade Q&A and all kinds of peripheral stuff.
2. "Oh, I'm a smoker and I've been thinking about quitting - AGAIN." I usually respond with facts as I know them. Smoking is a leading cause of lung cancer and quitting can ...... or reverse many of the effects of smoking. Vaping uses generally only three ingredients - nicotine (which is optional) and vegetable glycerin and propylene glycol (which are FDA approved). More than just an e-cigarette, my iStick20 is what's referred to as an advanced personal vaporizer. With this APV I can take control of my nicotine content and also replicate the psychological gratification I wanted from smoking without the dangerous physical effects. And eventually I may wean myself off the use of nicotine altogether.
3. "Oh, I've heard/read that it's just as dangerous as smoking?" Same answer as 2. plus: You know, I've heard and read the same thing. But most of the stories are anecdotal or opinions disguised as science. Gee whiz, if you have any real scientific studies, I'd sure like to learn more about it. Please call me or bring it by the shop when you get a chance.

Anyway, just my .02 from a new vaper. I could be wrong.

We could all be wrong - but we're happy with our choice.

E-Cig a device that heats tobacco to a burning point via electronically heated coils....

dont know about yall but Im not using tobacco..... Im using a liquid that contains nicotine ( that could come from eggplants, tomato plants etc...) :)

It could do. If I was making e-liquid I'd probably extract nicotine from the bits left over from smokeable tobacco.

I meant if I was making it from scratch rather than modular building. I mix my blackcurrant vape with nic base and flavour, but I'm mixing, not making. :)

Stir-stir-stir, I made mixed some Raspberry Vanilla wafer Fig Newton juice once ... it tasted like ..........

What should I have called it?

Black Panthers and Occupiers? Those are the last two hate groups I would want to be associated with, but many on here do remind me of the Occupiers...

A cigarette delivers nicotine via combustion; my mods deliver nicotine via electricity... Electronic cigarette is here to stay, hence the name of the forum...

When someone asks me what it is, I tell them it's my anti-smoking device. ;) It immediately gets my point across as to what I'm using it for, and always starts a conversation about it.

People call them "electronic cigarettes", but they're not electronic cigarettes.
People call them "mods", but they're not mods.
People call it "steeping" their e-liquid, but it's not steeping.
People call e-liquid "juice", but it's not juice.

They are all names that started when vaping first began and they've stuck. As others have pointed out, there were good reasons for calling them electronic cigarettes. People called them mods because that's what they were, modified flashlights and such. I don't know how steeping and juice got started. I prefer aging to steeping. Personally, I think we should call e-liquids/juice v-liquid, (vaping liquid).

Like them or not, they are most likely going to be around for quite a while.

I call mine a cigarette thingy.

How bout we stop renaming things, when we get uncomfortable with the name. Be happy it's not called an E-.... Heck maybe the Democrats will go to go back to being called the Confederacy.... The repubilican Liberals or later progressives. Socialist, communist, facist, this one a trick, cause they all the same thing.

I've seen posts like this a lot, and I fully agree that it'd be highly beneficial to move away from the branding of "e-cig" in the more advanced industry, but unfortunately that'd be a hard campaign. Non-vaping individuals will always see it as "e-cigs" no matter what it looks like, (unless they think it's for drugs) and with media spouting all this hate and calling everything by the same nomenclature, it'll be hard to change that viewpoint in the public eye. There are a lot of proponents for this, though.... So hopefully some day the cycle will be broken.
