For me, I didn't start with the very low. Actually, my first were the MVP2.0 and a SID. I did some research and followed others that I personally knew. They were at that level and that was what they knew.

I think the clear majority on this forum are the hobbyists, so the replies reflect that. Also, some don't want to see new people spend all the money before they get something that an advanced user would be happy with. I am glad that I started rather low since I learned more of the basics. I see a fair number here that have advanced systems and ask the most basic of questions.

I don't suggest advanced anything, nor do I suggest pen styles. Just something that gets an acceptable flavor so the new person can get off of cigs. To me, that is the need of the clear majority. Although this forum doesn't support those people as well as the hobbyists and the hobbyists shouldn't intimidate the new by telling them what they have to have.

IMHO...

I see some vapers calling other people's setups "crappy", just because it doesn't suit their style. There are good quality CE4's, tanks, rba's and RBT's. There are crappy knockoffs too. As a community of people that are former smokers, belittling another's preference has no place and can discourage those who are struggling to switch.

Most new vapers trying to quit smoking want simple convenience as the first step. Most continue to use simple setups and succeed. It's not as much the device as the desire to quit, after that it's just a tool for most people, and a hobby for a few.

Different strokes for different folks.

Simple answer since I don't feel like justifying my opinion on "Sub-Ohm" tanks, No I won't stop recommending them.

All I am going to say, my wife has been struggling for over a year trying to quit smoking going the same route I did when I stopped with every manner of tank, clearo, carto, RDA etc. So she finally went and bought herself a box mod and Atlantis and was able to get what she was missing instantly and has not had a cigarette in two weeks!

I agree with this sentiment. I researched and started with a iStick 50w and Atlantis for my first vape, as I wanted something that could grow as my abilities did and so that I could save $$$, I could not afford several hundred on vaping gear.

I quickly became frustrated with this setup and realized it was probably overkill for a first time. It's getting easier, but coughing everything I hit on the vape makes it hard to quit the Menthol analogs, which are difficult for me to cough on. I had previously only had a Markten cigalike for a short time.

This is my only concern. I have no issue with sub ohm per se....

I didn't start with a cig-a-like at all. A family member switched from a 2-pack a day habit to vaping and I was immediately interested. I came to these forums and started doing research and quickly figured out that the cig-a-likes were pretty awful. I started with an MVP2 and a Protank2 with a couple evods. I only recently upgraded to an RTA a few weeks ago. I don't think suggesting Subtank/Atlantis is a bad idea at all. I only wish those tanks had been around when I started (had nothing but problems with my Protank2).

Does she have a time machine to the 1990s, or do you guys live close to a reservation? ;)

Might be close to North Dakota. Tax is around .44 a pack. Before I quit smoking (and when Minnesota raised the tx) I went to N. Dakota to buy my cigs. I'd get 3 cartons for $114. I was screwing Minnesota out of tax big time. Three cartons here are over $200. Dumb politicians. What did they think would happen?

Yeah but you also have these types:

Today I've received my very first device - the iStick 50W. My Kanger Subtank was delivered yesterday. Also bought some juices to try and so far I'm blown away. The production of the vapor is simply outstanding! No leaks so far or any other issues.
Primed the coil properly and started low. Using 1.2ohm coil (iStick reads it 1.3) vaping some fruity juice (0.6mg/ml) and playing with a wattage - between 15 and 20 watts.

This is my first time I'm going to stop smoking, ever since I started some 12 years ago. I'm going to have my last analog just before midnight so I start fresh tomorrow.

Thank you to all of you! You are awesome and I appreciate your contributions and reviews out there!. You were the reason why I opted for this device and finally pulled the trigger.

I wouldn't suggest a ProTank 2 to a new vaper, either. You had problems with your PT2 because you didn't learn to vape first...

Given the large amount of posts by new users having issues with more 'advanced' equipment, clearly Sub tanks are not for beginners...

To the opening post, first off, I love the Atlantis and Subtank Mini. It's what got me hooked on vaping. I don't enjoy the brash, dry, and grainy throat hits of most vaporizers where I have to suck like hell to receive minimal vapor. I love having complete control of the air flow too, I change it all the time. And from my experience with sub-ohming, I get the most saturated flavor and vapor as opposed to anything else I've tried.

I know what it's like to smoke real cigarettes and I HATE them. Sub-ohming may be a slightly different experience, but its the best in my opinion. That's why there's endless options out there, to each his own. I don't even see vaping as smoking any more. VAPING IS VAPING.

wait, you mean not everybody hits a Troll RDA at 30-40w/.5 ohm for 5-6 second direct lung inhales? huh?

but seriously, I would tell people to start off with a KFL+ or K4 and if they like it, then try an ST Mini. My experience with the ST Mini is that people who already vape love it when they try it, and it changes the way they vape. Coming from cigarettes the Kayfun experience is going to be a lot more accessible. The ST Mini is a genius tank though. It provides you with a fantastic sub ohm vape with little effort. I would much rather vape my ST Mini than drip all day, so Kanger changed how I vape in more ways than one. It's a watershed product IMO.
I have to Question How a Smoker would jump right to a Kayfun RTA. Also Nautilus- Nautilus Mini Tanks are nice and could last a newer Vaper a Long time before a upgrade was needed.

I've tried a couple times since getting my kayfuns, to get the T3Ss back outta the drawer and get them going with my own coils (I first learned to make coils on those!)... but I can't seem to wick them anymore; after about 2 hits, all I can get is burnt dry hit. :(

Andria
I don't have any problem with dry hits. I use cotton in em and use kanthal to wick them. I don't hit em very hard and theres plenty of time to re-saturate the wick. I only use em for tobacco flavors. Also the Reds tobacco I use from Vape Wild is pretty thin and at 75 pg I think. Kataya is the Queen of Kangers and can tell you all about em. My Wife has 2 T3S's I bought her last year with the same coils in them and they still work and taste great! She always fills them when they get down to 1/3 tank and uses the same Apple Menthol flavor in em. Go figure :)

Edit: Maybe change the coil heads out or it could be your juice is too thick, too much power?

If you just quit smoking and you're switching to vaping, an ego-style pen is great for a beginner. That's what I got my girlfriend, it's what she wanted at the time and it worked for her. But I'm telling you, you're eventually going to want something better and that was exactly the case with her. No more than 3 weeks of having her new vape pen, we went out and bought her a MVP 20 with a Nautilus Mini. SHE LOVES IT and likes it much more. If only we waited and thought it out more, we would have saved money. I did a ton of research before buying my IPV Mini with Atlantis. Afteer I was introduced to that setup in a shop, I knew that's what I wanted... I ignored the starter kit sales pitch and saved money.

She doesn't have any problem now trying my IPV Mini with Atlantis or Subtank Mini when I try new flavors. My setup is what made her want to upgrade from a ego-style pen to the MVP 20/Nautilus Mini.

The juice has a lot to do with it too in terms of how anything hits like a real cigarette.

Yep, I've never seen it as smoking, but a truly awesome *substitute* for smoking -- it gives me everything I got from cigarettes (since I use WTA) but none of the carcinogens, and it even costs less, tastes better, and doesn't offend my family whatsoever. Pretty sure I'll never do the sub-ohm thing, with my asthma, but since I've gotten a magma and gone to a 1.4Ω build rather than the 1.8Ω I previously used with my kayfuns, I'm enjoying it more than ever -- great flavor, great vapor (for me with my 84% PG!), just truly satisfying.

Vaping is vaping. And vaping is GREAT. HOWEVER you do it!

84 PG should wick pretty good in your T3S's unless you meant 84 VG. That won't work so hot in em:)

It's not too thick, at 84% PG, but might be too gunky, the stuff I vape now -- it's very sweet, and there's a LOT of flavoring in the mix, whereas when I first started, I was vaping about 75%-80% PG, but "Virginia", a very light juice that I'm pretty sure doesn't use a lot of flavor.

The last time I tried one, I used one of the stock coils that I still have, brand new, and the taste was ok for the first 2 hits, but the 3rd one was burnt and nasty. I guess this sweeter juice (which also has 8% WTA) is just too gunky for those tiny coils. And maybe I had it turned up too high too, I've gotten so used to that with my kayfuns.
