The harder you press, the more they'll resist. You've given them the opportunity and tools to quit. It's up to them to act on it. But I will say, nothing pee'd me off more than someone who nagged me about something. It produces the exact opposite effect of what you intended.

I've given her some of the best of the best gear, a ton of DIY juice in just about every flavor of the rainbow and every nic level imaginable and she still won't give up the stinkies!

She seems to enjoy the flavors and enjoys vaping, she just continues to smoke as well.

It was so easy for me to switch to vaping (and that was 6 years ago using stick bats and 510 atties with blue foam after smoking for 30+ years!), why does it seem just not to "take" for some folks??
Take the hint and let her live her life how she wants

My oldest, dearest friend called me in February and old me she wanted to quit because her oldest daughter is pregnant. She doesn't want to expose her new grandchild to smoking. Apparently she had promised her daughter she would quit when she became pregnant. Immediately I told her she has to want to quit for herself, not her daughter and grandchild.

Well, I took her several setups and juice to try to find out what she liked, got her set up and 3.5 months later she hasn't quit.

I'm nearly certain its because she feels forced to quit, rather than it being what she wanted to do. For me, it was a decision I made for myself, not for other people.

I've run into this before with grandma and it's tough but it's doable. You just have to have the stones for it. First go out and buy a pack of her favorite cigarettes and then get one of those roll your own with a filter cig makers. You'll need to carefully empty the tobacco out of about 5 cigs.

1. The Dog Turd cig - Just like it sounds. Find a dog turd and dry it out. When it's dry, shred it up and mix it with tobacco and use the machine to make her a new not so tasty cig. Slip them into her current pack of smokes. If she enjoys this smoke, end the friendship. She has issues.

2. The Skunk Cig - This one is a little harder. You need to track down a skunk and have it spray a few cigs. Then let them dry and slip them into her current pack of smokes. Don't be around her when she lights this one.

3. The Tom & Jerry Cig - You'll need a firecracker for this one. Mix in some firecracker powder in with the tobacco and slip them into her current pack of smokes. When she lights it - BOOM! If it blows up and she goes black face and the cig forms a flower around her head, you have to upload a pic of it.

4. The Ipecac Cig - Drench the filter in ipecac. Slip it in her pack and wait for her to vomit.

5. The Carolina Reaper Cig - Take a Carolina Reaper pepper and slice it up paper thin. You'll want to wear latex gloves and googles while you work with it. Rub the filtered ends of a few cigs in the oils of the pepper. Dry the slices up in the sun until they are brown. Mix the slices with the tobacco and reinsert it using the machine. Slip one of these cigs into her current pack of smokes. If she smokes this one down to the ...., she's a lost cause.

imho its the juice. until i found one that tasted like my cigs i couldnt quit. it took alot of testing of juices until i found the one, but then i needed to special order a higher nic of 27 because the strongest one the vendor had was 18. that hit the spot. fast track a year later i vape 3mg sweet juice flavors, who would of thunkit.
i never understood why vendors had a smaller ratio of tobacco flavors compared to fruit/food flavors, now i know.

some people actually need more than nic to quit, they need the alkaloids from tobacco.
there are juice makers that use tobacco to make their juice, good reviews are for Black Note Tobacco Eliquid and i am sure there are others and i was about to try those kind of juices until i found mine.

Her rate of transition may just be slow. Liking vapor doesn't make the appeal of cigs go away. There is still something about the taste (or at least the first drag) and it has a stronger physical effect than refined nicotine. If she is actually reducing smoking, it can still work over time, unless all attitudes are against that... I do have some friends I provided with vapes and it seems like they only use them between and in addition to cigs, which probably won't work, but if she's past that point, don't give up. Reduced smoking for 1-2 months will reduce the need for whole tobacco/smoking components, while improving sense of taste, reducing physical issues with vapor due to smoking, and of course give one more chance to find things to like about vaping.

There's also a chance her taste in hardware and juice is different from yours.

It's as if most people have to have some sort of epiphany before making the transition to vaping. Health concerns, concerns for other people (loved ones) that are around you when you're smoking, failed attempts when trying the patches, or gum, or some type of prescription meds...something has to go off or happen first. When your friend is really ready to lay down the analogs, they'll jump into vaping big time.

People will only quit if they are at a point where they "want" to. You could've given me a hundred different juices and awesome setups but until I was ready none of it would've worked.

I respectfully disagree. I had no desire to quit. I actually picked up vaping because I had just upgraded my desktop computer and didn't want to smoke around it. As an alternative I was sent a coupon for a free mark10 cicgalike(horrible BTW) and said to myself how about this. So I tried it and to make a long story short it just seriously snowballed from there. Lol I had no real desire to quit. Never even tried before. I enjoyed it to much but now I enjoy vaping to much

I never thought I could quit smoking. I wasn't even sure I was ready to try. But the first week of vaping, I did. I had a few more isolated smokes and they tasted terrible but the hooks are very strong. There's something about the nicotine and chemicals in combustion that's very satisfying despite the horrible taste. But now I vape because the inhale/exhale is the strongest part of my addiction and I have the desire to stay off of cigarettes. It has to be a person's own wish to quit, for whatever reasons they have. No one else's urging will help.

But you did want to quit around your computer, I know that's nitpicking but it still derived from a want to not smoke in some form or another. :)

I was a dual user for a long time, it wasn't that I didn't like vaping, as I did. I DIY'ed so I could make anything I wanted. I wanted and needed to quit as I have COPD and Asthma, my sister was already on o2, my dad had lung cancer (wasn't what he passed from). I knew what smoking was doing to me as I had been in the hospital a couple times already due to low o2 levels.

With all that I still smoked as well as vaped. Now I had been a 3 pack a day smoker for the last 10 years of the 27 years I smoked, and as good as vaping is there was just something it wasn't giving me. Even now when I am around people smoking and can smell it I crave a cig, just I can no longer stand to smoke it if I try.

When I would have a few people I know say something when I lit a smoke instead of picking up my PV, it didn't help me, what it did however was piss me off and make me not want to speak to them.

So I would suggest just give her time, don't add to the pressure (trust me she is most likely giving herself enough of that), but do be supportive. Instead of saying something about what/when she smokes, say something about her vaping when she is.

My husband and I are perfect examples. We bought our first e-cigs 3 1/2 years ago. It was a tiny kit called a nic-stic. 180mah auto batteries and a cartridge/atomizer set up. I haven't had a smoke since I opened up that little kit. We have since moved up to bigger and better devices. He still smokes - a carton every two weeks. He was smoking 2 cartons or more a week. I don't pressure him at all. Pressuring someone to quit only pushes them to smoke more.

Good luck to your friend. I applaud you for wanting to help her but you have done all you can do. My advice: It is all up to her now. Answer questions if asked but don't push.

Thanks for all the great replies guys! This is what this forum is all about. :)

I'm going to take the advice given here and stop making remarks on her "still smoking, eh?", "y'know, you could save a lot of money" and "dang, you STINK!". Of course these comments are always a bit tongue-in-cheek and all in good fun.

I guess those little jabs aren't really helping...I'm going to keep suggesting new devices and juices that I think might work for her - she recently tried this after I ran across it here on the forum, and while it tastes just horrible to me, she seems to like it - but I'll keep the anti-smoking comments to myself from now on. ;)
