OK so over the last three years I have tried on multiple occasions to use Cartomizers.
I always give up on them and revert to Atty dripping a 510, tanks, etc...

I just bought an eGo kit for travel and it came with shorty cartomizers. Ok I'll give 'em a whirl. After all it's been several years things change quickly.

Fill with juice, wait, top off, wait, let sit for 4 hours, top off with juice. Primer Puff....Primer Puff... !! Smoking Burnt Tires !!

Am I completely doing something wrong or do people just like the taste of burn ...?

I mean I'm not a noob to vaping. Mechanical, VV, Standard Atty, direct dripping, AGA-T, Terminator, Vivi Nova, eVod, all seem ok.
I make my own coil's and wicks. I think I know what I'm doing.

Is there a magic combination of Carto ohm to voltage?

Did you fully saturate the carto before firing it up? Cause if you didn't, the burnt taste sounds like a burnt carto.

I've been using Smoketeck 1.7 ohm cartos naked (haha...no tank) on a 3.7-4.2 volt battery for about a year now. It's my sweet vape.

I fill cartos with a syringe mostly. It works best with my 100% vg juices.

Originally I used the Smoketeck XLs on a Kgo. Now I use the Smoketeck super shorties on a Reo.

The Reo battery is an AW IMR 18490. I have to be careful when I first use a fresh battery. I take some short puffs until the battery cools down the voltage a little. Then I'm off to the vaping races.

Smoketech 1.7 ohm vaped naked!!

I had this problem a lot when filling cartos from the drip end to use directly, or even cartos in tanks that I didn't prime properly. I've found since I got a bottom-feeder that problem has gone away, and I'm back to loving cartos again. My only complaint is I seem to only get 1-2 days out of a carto before the taste drops off.

If it helps I use 2.0 ohm cartos in my gripper. Not strictly a mechanical but it has the same "start at 4.2V and go down til it tastes weak around 3.5V" characteristics as you report on your device. I use the condom method and drip top off method and the only time I got a burn was when I was out with it and didn't bring my bottle of juice with me and let it get too dry. That was after a good half day of vaping on it.
