5 cents/hr :)
We americans may have clawed our way to the top, but as a country we're all taking a nap in the penthouse now. We might have the military, but all our production and labor will be done in mexico, china, taiwan and korea. We don't want to work for our money Were all too busy watching american idol and reality tv. We are in the middle east for one reason only. Bush and Cheney were oil guys, nothing more(I used to back them up on the war, I no longer do) Which is why we're fighting with Iran and Venezuela now. Auto companies in the U.S. are going bankrupt because no one will give up their $70/hr job. When the banks were bailed out all the CEO's took bonuses for their failure. Power is shifting because we would'nt be caught dead picking lettuce, or sewing nike's for $10/hr.

What China is doing to the USA can be considered their right, in a polluted way.

Remember what us white men did to the "native" Indians? Had a term for the destruction of their lifestyle, land, race.

Manifest Destiny. Us white guys hunger to move from east to west, to own, dominate and control. From sea to shining sea, we had to have it all. At any price.
Not to say China wants to physically control the USA. Survival of the fittest is law of the land, though.

Kinda symbolic about the east to west, huh?

I believe the Arabs hate the West mainly because we colonized and exploited them during most of the 20th century. In contrast, China has only pumped money into the region while continually displacing the U.S. as many oil producing countries' primary customer.
Arab nations do not "hate the west". That is extremist fundamentalists who's beliefs and actions are not condoned on any wide scale in the middle east. For the most part the countries of the middle east have very good relations with the USA. A minority of those countries do not provide assistance to the USA.

It's not just the trade issue - we are currently dependent on China for our level of consumption. WE have a nearly $500 billion dollar trade deficit with China while China owns nearly a quarter of our foreign debt. Most of our retail and manufacturing industries have become dependent on China for cheap parts, computers, and circuitry. It is far more than a trade issue....
This sounds very familiar... OH YEAH, it is the exact same thing that people were saying about the Japanese back in the 1990's and how they were going to 'own America' in another decade. Well that decade past and I don't see the Japanese flags waving all over America.

Exactly. He's ignoring the fact that China is funding our current debt while we consume more Chinese products than we export. Not to mention the Chinese buying and investing in American companies, i.e. Hummer, GM.
I have not ignored it, you have. This is the very reason why China becomes more and more dependent on the USA every day. The USA is funding the country by spending more on their good than we earn from exporting to them. Without the income China earns from exporting to the USA the country would quickly fall into dire financial straights.

I will continue to maintain that American wages are very fair and just. I believe in the standard of living that has been promoted through history. The American dream is to live in a nice house and raise a family. If the American dream is perverted to the point of sub poverty wages and living multiple families in one domicile as you would have it then I will be moving to Canada.

Obviously you never have spoken with anyone from the Middle East or who has worked in the Middle East - even Americans who originate from the Middle East will spout anti-American sentiment among themselves and close friends (personal experience).

Except China's growth is REAL and they have far more savings than Japan ever had.

So us owing China trillions of dollars says that they are dependent on us and not the other way around? How can we continue to buy their products on debt indefinitely? It doesn't work that way and Chinese officials are openly calling for a shift from a dependence on the dollar to another form of currency. You are also ignoring the fact that China exports more to the rest of the world than us, while our economy is dependent on Chinese manufacturing.

Who is the authority that says everyone must have the American dream? It's an ideal created out of earlier economic situations that are no longer valid....

When you advocate slave standards do not be surprised when you wake up one day and discover you are the slave.

BTW
the ironic part is that if any of you resided in China you would not be able to participate in this thread since the government would not allow you free access to the internet and if the government did allow you access to the discussion and they caught you saying something bad about the Chinese government you would likely find yourself in a jail cell with no trial and no rights to fight it.

Have a good day and enjoy the freedom that America allows you.

When you overpay workers, you end up broke and in trillion dollars of debt to foreign nations.

BTW. Chinese people can access this forum and are selling their products here, i.e. David Yang.

Read the history of man and it is a guide book to the future. Man only changes the looks of what he does not how he does it. Man has change the efficiency of his damage to other countrys. It is the same war, and it's called "you got it I want it".

Kate, is right about the rise and fall of empires. The "Ancient" Romans had give away programs untill they could no longer afforded them the government fell.

From studying these posts, I have concluded that most of us do not care that China will displace the U.S. This could be a positive sign though as we will have to eventually merge with them economically... I think that if this same question was asked even 20 years ago, people would be more emotional about it but I guess nationalism is going out of style...

It is not a matter of Nationalism, our government is running a muck and we can love our country and cry over our loss of such wonderful country, but we have to accept the facts. International greed, business greed, and self greed is destroying us and don't forget jealousy of of neighbor having thing me can't afford.

Silly me, I thought it was because most modern people have a more compassionate mentality than the average slave trader of hundreds of years ago.

I suppose it is refreshing to see someone hold on to those old school values by trying to convince others we should be working towards fewer human rights and more oppression of the working class rather than promoting silly ideas like elevating working class people to societal positions of self dignity and respect.

apparently evolution is a choice.... whoda thunk it.

Compassionate morality is giving people food, a place to live, and a chance to build a family - not having a 2 story home, more cars than family members, and thousands of dollars in debt of consumer electronics. Not to mention spoiled kids who waste thousands in college to earn a useless degree...

Yeah the people in my trailer park are not even close to the evolved state of the people at say, your local KKK meeting.

Just one question, what is the grand prize in the most ignorant person in the word competition? You seem like a good person to ask.

Not many, one - Saudi Arabia. Whose government has had close ties with U.S. and British oil companies even before the nation was established.

Are you really naive enough to think that a boatload of countries around the globe, starting with the UK, Japan, Germany, pretty much all of Scandinavia, etc, etc... aren't hitting their knees every night thankful that the U.S. is taking the lead in the Middle East to ensure the continue flow of oil to there countries? They don't always say so publicly, but you can bet they are thanking us behind closed doors.
