Well, I'm no scientist nor to I play one on TV, but any chemical reaction has a finite life. That's why batteries wear out, litmus paper no longer turns color (a one time example) and, I strongly suspect, your post cards. I've got to ask how old they are. I haven't seen ones like that in a LONG time.

Thanks for the answer. I suspected as much. I tried to find info on the Internet, and this is the closest I came: Humidity indicator card - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I first saw these cards when I was a kid back in the '50s, probably. The concept absolutely fascinated me. I haven't seen any for sale in years, and I wonder if they stopped making them because of something poisonous in the process. These are newer, probably purchased in the '70s or early '80s. When I saw the first one in a post card stand, I remembered my childhood and had to buy it. Then when I saw others, I had to get them, too. I wanted an extensive collection, but these were the only ones I've seen.

Humidity CARDS???

Well we have passed that since the new digital sensors like SHT25 from sensirion which can measure RH% and temp in a milisecond without wear and without throwing it away.
I was making cigar humidor controllers with this sensor and i could measure humidity with great accuracy (like 45.656485 RH and 24.923542 Celcius). ISN'T THIS AMAZING?!!
.....

Anyway i got carried away :D

The cards had hazardous chemicals on them and they later replaced them with more safe chemicals AND then they were replaced by technology..

Oh! btw HI EVERYBODY!

You may guess I have nothing better to do than pretend I'm a mad scientist with these postcards. Well, I decided to see if they would turn blue, so I took one and blew warm, dry air on it with my hair dryer. I figured that was low humidity. And the sails did change, but not really to blue, more a murky grayish color. See?

Cape May got the hair dryer; Bangor didn't. How about that?

I guess by now you are all shaking your heads at how easily amused I am.

Well if it's cobalt or copper chloride it degrades over time, mostly because of the reactions with water and atmospheric air.
You could try to find those chemicals and re apply them on the cards but the results are unknown.

I would go for copper II chloride, It's a green salt looking chemical and it's used in cleaning wood stove chimneys and fire places, by burning it in the fire (produces nice green color which is why is used in pyrotechnics sometimes too) it raises the temperature of the gasses going up and burns the soot stuck on the walls of the chimneys etc.

MFS = MyFreedomSmokes. They are the only supplier that I deal with for unflavored nicotine. They generally have outstanding sales. I buy 60mg level so that it isn't so dangerous for someone with unsteadiness. No mask is required. I just DIY at my desk.

Hey, we use that stuff in our wood stove to keep the chimney clean.

But … but … that doesn't mean they have to stop making the postcards, does it? Or are the chemicals still too hazardous? I've handled these cards quite a bit. Why am I not dead? I guess they didn't want something that could make a toddler sick if he put it in his mouth. I guess it's like, when I was little, I had lead animals, and I even had a celluloid donkey (have it still), though even at that time they stopped making toys with celluloid, I heard, because it was extremely flammable, though I never tried to set fire to the donkey. I did have more celluloid animals, though, but they cracked. They are extremely fragile. Not tough enough to stand up to a child's play, IMHO. I just looked up celluloid: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celluloid Yes, flammable and fragile. I guess my donkey, which is in perfect condition, might actually be worth something. Here he is.

Yeap! I believe you can find it on stores in small quantities

Hmm! I'm not that old, had no toys made out of nitrocellulose but let me tell you this.
Yes Nitrocellulose is very flammable, infact explosive at some conditions, this is what smokeless gunpowder is (with some modern additions these days).
I use it in pyrotechnics but i have to make it from plain cotton by nitration with high concentration acids.

The difference with toys (ping pong balls even on our days now are made out of nitrocellulose) is that they contain large amounts of filler material, other plastics to give it more mass and lower the cost, so old toys and ping pong balls are not dangerous but are simply flammable.
When i started pyrotechnics i had to make some nitrocellulose i dissolved ping pong balls into acetone and take the filler out.

If they are making postcards with RH indicators these days i suppose they use more modern chemicals safe for everyone. Even copper II choride isn't much hazard, i think i tasted some of this some time a go...

LOL!
Hm i think i'm not interested, we have real donkeys here anyway.

I do not like vintage stuff, i prefer shiny devices with led indicators :D

That's because you're not old enough that your childhood toys are considered collectors' items yet. Those vintage things bring back memories. There will be a time when the shiny stuff you play with now will be outdated and not made anymore in favor of new, more efficient stuff, and then you'll sigh and reminisce about back when you used that stuff that seems so high-tech now. Not long ago here, people were reminiscing about using floppy discs in their computers. I remember those days, too. Now, even VHS movies are considered old-fashioned. Anyone remember Beta movies and 8-track tapes?

I don't miss floppy disks, those suckers made my day black everytime i had corrupt data.
I miss my amiga 1200 however, i sold it few years back to a US guy on ebay.

Past is past, the future is the problem.

Oh, I don't think anyone was extolling their virtues. They were just remembering. There will come a time when you will only see a floppy disc in a museum, but I bet they'll have one there.

You're right to look to the future, but I'm not sure if it's a problem, even if it seems so now. It could be an opportunity, too. They say that crisis = opportunity, though there's an argument about that if you want to get into Chinese linguistics. See Chinese word for "crisis" - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Come on, if I can type it you can too LOL.

I don't think 100mg is all that dangerous if you are careful with it. I do wear nitrile gloves when handling it in bulk and make sure I have good ventilation, as in a fan of some sort blowing the fumes away from me, but once it's in a 30 or 60 milliliter bottle with a dropper, just normal cautions for handling liquids that you don't want to touch should work. Plus 100mg does go a lot further.

Just my opinion, worth what you're paying for it. Your results and mileage may vary. No warranty or guarantee is expressed or implied. Proceed at your own risk.

(See, I typed it again and even added to it :) )
