Rave said she enjoyed my photos, and I hope others do, too, so here's one of a horse, and I'll tell her story, too. This is Luna, a quarter horse mare, owned by a former fellow boarder.
I love this photo, because Luna looks so balanced and together. The barn owner and I turned her out in the outdoor ring and chased her around so I could get some photos of her to do a portrait that the barn owner was going to give to Luna's owner, Kelly, as a gift. We decided on a head shot, but I always liked this photo best, so I thought I'd share it with you.
Kelly and Luna were a real pair. Though Kelly has other horses, Luna was always her special girl. They were closely bonded, like Penny and I are, not just a horse and owner. One of the times that this bond came home to me was that Kelly and her family were in a bad car accident. She broke her leg rather badly and was in a wheelchair for a while. One day after some recuperation, she went to the barn to see Luna. The barn owner had taken Luna in from the pasture and put her in a stall before Kelly arrived. Then Kelly wheeled down the barn aisle to Luna's stall. Luna put her head over the Dutch door to Kelly, who just embraced her. Luna had a look of utter contentment on her face. While Kelly was laid up, others rode Luna, but she never really seemed happy with the attention. When I saw Kelly and Luna at the stall door, tears welled up in my eyes, it was so moving. I wish I had had my camera with me that day.
Probably sooner than the doctor said, Kelly was riding Luna again. Luna was very patient and gentle with Kelly. I think she knew Kelly was hurt. As time went on, Kelly healed completely and went back to jumping Luna and showing her, and trail riding, all the things they had done before. But Luna was getting old, and Kelly kept looking for a horse to take Luna's place when Luna got too old for that kind of activity and was retired.
I moved Penny from that barn to where I board her now, and I hadn't seen Kelly in a while. I heard she got another, younger horse she was pleased with, and I guess Luna was retired or maybe just used for gentle trail rides.
Then one day after I broke my arm, I bumped into Kelly in town. She said she had put Luna down. By then, she seemed OK with it, but I'm sure it was devastating at the time.
So this photo and story is in memory of a great horse.
