Glad to see you back Tail, wishing I could help you feel safe again. We've never had a break in (knock wood) but we do use the alarm system religiously and have a crazy terrier patrolling the premises. So far, so good. But, I have been mugged and it was super scary and took me a long time to feel ok again. Sounds like you are doing everything possible to keep this from happening again. (((hugs))) I am really glad that you and whisper were not hurt physically.

Welcome back Rabbit, sounds like you had a wonderful vacation! You are your posts have been missed around here.

It has been a day of crazy weather here, rain, snow, graupel, sunshine, thick dark clouds, wind.....you name it! Even a rainbow! 39 degrees right now, we get a taste of springtime then it gets snatched away. It HAS to get better, right?

Hope all the rest of the gang is having a wonderful Saturday, those that are here, and those that are absent.

Your weather sounds even more extreme than ours. But I guess yours will travel to us. Graupel: I learned a new word. Thanks.

You have probably seen it before Sandy, it's that snow stuff that looks like the tiny balls from broken up styrofoam.

Yes, now I know what it means. I looked it up. I've seen that stuff quite often, but I never had a name for it. I was thinking of that legend (which isn't true) of how the Eskimos have thousands of words for snow, and how we have quite a few ourselves. Just go to a ski resort and hear the reports on the radio of ski conditions!

Taking pictures of your home and possessions then and saving the pictures on CD/DVDs is a great idea. Also just keeping computer backup files on them is necessary in the event of situations like this.

Having a guard dog is good but nowadays, these fools have guns and would shoot an animal that appears threatening. Thankfully Whisper was not harmed during the robbery. I hope she ran and hid under something...

The insurance company wants a description of each item as well as the cost and how long I've owned it. Pictures are good, but if you don't have the description, you still have to do the research. That is why I'm writing everything down and will eventually transfer that data to the computer and CD. I've been on the internet all day looking stuff up. They took a really old Carver 900 receiver of mine that I bought in Italy probably 25 years ago. I was able to actually find a picture and description!

Whisper doesn't bark if the doorbell rings. The day of the burglary, I found her on her couch under a blanket. Not sure if the thugs put the blanket back up on the couch (all the cushions were on the floor) for her or not. When I was a police dispatcher, I heard plenty of awful stories of what happens to loud barking pets. I'm glad my little one was probably quiet and stayed in her blankets.

After careful thought, I believe the men that robbed me did a lot of surveillance on my street and the greenbelt and street behind me. They had to use a box truck or something large and lifted everything over the rear fence to the awaiting truck. They did park the lookout vehicle in my garage for awhile which was confirmed after asking my neighbors what they saw. This was no snatch and grab type robbery. It was thought out completely and executed perfectly. I doubt they will be back, but I'm still using a wheel lock on my motorcycle while it's parked in the garage since they stole my keys.

I was lucky enough to get an I7 processor for the price of an I5. The fellow I do my computer business with gave me a huge break on a machine. It's more than I need, but I appreciate his kindness.

Whisper and I have been sitting here in the office all day. Time to take a break. Going to watch a movie and relax for the rest of the evening.

Tail, I was so sorry to hear about the robbery, but then so relieved to know that Whisper wasn't harmed. I know how you feel, having gone through it myself.....though on a much smaller scale. We were robbed one night while we were sleeping. Whoever came in took just some small things that they could carry......like jewelry, cigarettes, cash. When I woke up and discovered what had happened I also realized that my waking up made them run. They dropped a few things in the back yard. It was lucky for us they were non-violent or it could have ended badly.

It doesn't just leave you with fear, but with the feeling of being violated and with anger. You do get over it in time though. You slowly "heal" and though you never forget it, you eventually gain full possession of your home again.

I just got finished balancing my checkbook. It was fairly easy this time, but it's always a task I dread. So here's a related photo.

Could you guess what it is? No, not modern art. It's part of the vault door at my bank. I love the lines and shapes in that door when they leave it open and I'm standing in line at the bank. All gleaming, smooth lines.

Glad you're back Tail ! I've really missed you here, even though we were in touch... everyone was so worried and upset about this situation.

Seems like you are handling your business admirably and still going to work everyday. That's amazing! I don't know if I would have the presence of mind to be able to do the cleanup, research and gather all the information and organize it the way that you're doing it. You're one levelheaded lady during this stressful period!

I hope healthwise that you are feeling a little better. It's got to be tough to have to deal with this at the same time.

Hopefully you will be able to chill and relax with Whisper this weekend and I'm glad that you are vaping again. :)

You know, Tail, now you've got me thinking. A scanner can be easily used to produce files like the descriptions on instruction manuals to accompany the photos/videos. Yeah, it makes it more of a pain in the ..., but then the insurance company paper pushers would be well satisfied, unless of course they come up with some other dumb "rule" in their attempts to avoid paying. Maybe a professional insurance adjuster would be an idea as well.

I just got a new scanner, a result of upgrading to Win7/64 bit, and I think I'll be spending some time scanning catalog and manual pages to go with the photos I've already stored. One never knows, do one?

Many times, those owner's manuals can be downloaded from the company's website, which might be easier and more readable than scanning a copy of your papers.

That's true, but a lot of the older stuff may only be available as printed material. I don't know what kind of scans you've seen, but the ones I get from my scanner are hard to tell from an original when printed. There is a lot of stuff available online in terms of descriptions and manuals that can be saved as files. Either way, a complete record can easily be archived onto CD or DVD. The next consideration is that both have a "life expectancy" of ten years, according to what I remember from data backup. On the other hand I have some CDs that are still fine after fifteen years, so I think that ten year thing may be a little overly conservative.

Awsum and Sandy good ideas. I did go to a lot of websites to get my info. The insurance company doesn't need a huge description, just the make and model of most things. I urge all of you to call your insuance and go over your policy and what they would require for a claim. I didn't realize that I have a 1K cap on my jewelry and my baseball card collection. Both of which were valued more than 1k!!!

The hardest was trying to remember what my computer had in it. I ended up going to Dell's website and picked out a 2 year old model and used that description and what I could remember. The fellow that I do my computer business with said even though I upgraded my computer a couple of months ago with new hard drive, memory and such my old computer on the street might be worth a hundred dollars. I just spent 1k on my new machine and it would probably only bring a few hundred dollars.

I'm still doing the ledger. At least I know what I have coming into the house with the price I paid. Robbers aren't usually interested in books. :) I will transfer everything to the computer and make a CD and keep it at the office along with my old hard drive. I think the moral of this story is to always have a backup available outside the home. My office was such a mess, I ended up throwing out a lot of old CDs with unknown stuff written on them because I didn't want to deal with it.

I suppose the silver lining in this drama is I cleaned my closets, good will got some stuff, and I recycled my old electronics properly. Buy some stock in Sears because when I get my check, I need to replenish my tools and yard equipment. :)
