We have a lot of snow out there, and it's still coming down. I just went out to sweep off the porch so Bill could get up the steps, and just in time, too, because as I was finishing, he pulled in the driveway, which hasn't been plowed since early this morning. Rather than try to get into his parking space, which he couldn't even see, he parked in the driveway by the porch. I guess tomorrow morning, when the guy comes to plow again, Bill will have to move his car so they can plow there. There must be nearly 2 feet of snow now, and who knows how much more will fall tonight. I think this snowstorm is supposed to end sometime tomorrow morning, but I haven't heard lately if that's so. I guess I'll find out tomorrow. It'll either stop snowing, or it'll continue to fall.

It takes someone unaffected by your snowstorm to bring up the third possibility-- it will stop snowing, but the winds will pick up and it will drift to six feet in some places. Am I unmerciful, or what??

Good night, everyone. Stay warm! It's really, really cold here, as well as snowing. Here's another snowy photo from some time back. I was walking in the snow, and saw this rainbow halo around the sun. It's caused by ice crystals high in the atmosphere.
I was with Mom a few years ago and we saw a very bright spot in the sky. She called it a "sun dog," but didn't explain it. I just looked it up. Sun dog - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ahahaha! You horse people have to check this out. :D

Hilarious - I bet Nevada could do just as good as that horse at getting all the hay for his own and Nevada wouldn't mind running down the hay trailer at all.

Good morning. Apparently, the guy came to plow the driveway early, before we got up. He cleared in front of Bill's car, but it looks like he left a mound of snow so the cars in the parking area can't get out the other arm of the driveway. I guess once Bill moves his car, then everyone can come and go on that side.

I should explain. We have a circular drive, one side near the house, the other farther away, with a little plot of grass in the middle. At the far end of the circle is an area where everyone parks so as to leave the driveway clear. Last night, Bill parked by the house on the drive.

The plow came in this morning, cleared a spot in front of Bill's car, then cleared the other arm of the drive down to the parking area, and stopped. So all the cars parked where they should be are blocked in by the mound that the plow left.

Usually, the people upstairs leave for work earlier than Bill, but their cars are in the drive, and it sounds quiet up there. Maybe they're away?

So it'll be my car that will have problems getting out, and I wanted to do some shopping today. My friend was supposed to get together with me today -- probably go out for brunch -- but I wonder if that'll be canceled because of the snow piled up at her place. She's pretty intrepid, so she may come anyway. I haven't heard from her.

The temperatures are going to hover around 0 degrees today, according to the Internet weather. It was about 2 degrees last I looked. It's darn cold out there. I hope Penny is warm enough. She has her heaviest blanket on, but still … I hope the barn owner gives them extra hay.

The best way to keep a horse warm is to let them eat hay, because the slow digestion warms them.

My friend just called and canceled. Not because she thinks she can't get out but because her babysitter was trying to drive back from NYC last night and had to stop in a motel it was so bad. So the babysitter is somewhere en route now, not at my friend's house to watch her kids.

Later, when things have been cleared, I'll make an attempt for groceries. I wanted to go to Watkins Glen's Walmart, but that involves a steep hill. I guess they'll just load it with salt -- it's a major road.

That's a ton of snow Sandy!! Hope that you are able to get out and about. We have a measly 6" on the ground but are expecting a huge storm this weekend. The problem today is the temperature. It was -8 when I got up, but it's a balmy 2 degrees now. I need to go out and get more firewood to keep the home fires burnin'. For some reason, no one will let me use the chainsaw  but I can pick stuff up off of the ground if I can see it in the snow. I really feel sorry for my son and his fiance. They work outdoors all day long.

Unless I were desperate for groceries, I would just stay home SandySu. That is cold and icy.

24 degrees here which is doable. I wish we would get some more snow since we are so dry but I don't miss zero degrees. That is too darn cold for me.

Gotta go clean a house today. The lady went to weekly which I figured wouldn't last and yesterday she called me and wanted to go for every other week again. Fine with me. She may have a lead on another client for me. We shall see.

Wow! You really got hammered Sandy. That's a ton of snow!

We got lots of snow here but not that much. It's definitely more than what we've had for the past few years... about 6" and our wind chill is -2 degrees. I'm sure Awsum got a lot more.

This will be an inside day for me but Spanky is enjoying himself running around in it. It is quite beautiful... snow crystals blowing around.

Oh my, where's my manners! Good morning Volties. :) Coffee is on with blueberry muffins for everyone!

Oh crikeys! I just looked at the forecast again. The high on Monday is predicted to be -12 degrees. Must have more firewood ...

You'll have us beat. The weather this morning said the high would be 5, and the low -5. There's a stiff breeze out there, too, and as 0mg suggested, that means drifts. That isn't so bad out in a field, but here, with so many open fields, the snow blows across the field onto the road, and the plows go by regularly to clear the drifts, but they blow back almost immediately. So you'll be driving along a clear road, and suddenly, you're in 2 feet of snow. Then out again, if the drift isn't too large, and you can get through it on sheer momentum. Back on clear road till you get the next surprise. On the mostly clear road, you are tempted to go fast, but you really don't want to be going that fast entering a drift. It's very weird.

I think farmers or the local government or someone should be required to put up snow fence along the edges of fields where the snow routinely blows onto major roads. It would save money on sending plows out day after day when it's not even snowing, just to clear drifts. And it happens a lot here, so it's not something that you could say it's too rare to make snow fence worthwhile.

With it so cold, the snow is powdery, the kind that loves to drift, and it's windy, too. But if I just go to the local store in town, I won't have to go past farm fields where you get those drifts. I think going into town to shop will be OK, if I can get out of the driveway.

Thanks for the coffee and muffins, JoAnn. :)

Yes - I wondered about Awsum. It looked to me as if New Jersey was really going to get hit hard. Bo will probably love it though. It's fun to watch dogs enjoying the snow. I do rather miss that part. It always made me smile.

I'll be careful going out. There's wood lying all around, but a lot of it is the green stuff from the newly felled trees. I've been gleaning the area where Grandpa's remains are still scattered. He was the centuries-old white oak - the biggest that I've ever seen - that did so much damage when it fell including destroying my well and the bedrock beneath it. The only problem is, much of what remains of his lumber needs to be split. I'm not so good at that. Splitting oak, even oak that fell three years ago, is not all that easy. A log splitter would be really, really nice to have ...
