Doesn't the vinegar leave an odor?

Now this I know. I clean with white vinegar...I use it in the rinse water for laundry. Vinegar actually removes odors. It dries and the odor of the vinegar itself dissipates. White vinegar is the best thing in the world for cleaning linoleum AND it keeps ants out of the house. As soon as it gets warm, we start to have ants. When I spot that first one, I start spraying and wiping down my counters and appliances. Takes care of them. Doesn't pose any harm to pets, either. Also, bacteria cannot survive in vinegar.

Count me in among the wasteful. I tried to be a good citizen and clean my cartos, but laziness won out over frugality. I have 50 now, and that's after throwing out at least 50. I only use 3 juices, mostly just the same 2, and refill over and over until it shows a decline in function or taste - then out it goes cuz there's plenty more where that came from. I also order prefilled, and those act as the reserves for when one of the others get tossed. I swear the prefilled taste better than refilled juice.

Star, I also believe that 99 percent of the time, they must have some 'secret' going on at the factory-and those prefilleds are best. I've wondered if it's because it's machine-dispensed, evenly and then allowed to soak thoroughly before being used. They seem to come clean and crisp right out of the condoms.
But I've really wanted to master this (if you will) on my own, beings as there aren't a lot of prefilleds whose flavor I'm head over heels with...
So far, I've found making sure that the clean carto IS very clean, and very dry, and then using the perfect amount of drops to it, and then letting them sit (back in the condoms for at least two hours) is doing the trick. I still have to master this, but it's beginning to work for me. I'm even getting that 'sizzle sound' you always get with the prefilleds.
I don't do the flood-condom' method. I drip just about 17 or 18 drops down the very side of the uncapped end. I make sure it's absorbed before adding more....
I don't know if this works for any of you, but it's beginning to show results with me....
whatever any of our methods (or lack of) as long as it works for you, that's what really counts! :)

Vinegar with sodium bicarbonate removes MORE odors, give it a try. Baking soda, one spoon is enough.

That is probably what I will end up doing, too, Starsong. I just know that if the day should come that I find myself out of cartos, I'll be thinking I wish I had saved some and not thrown them all out. I got caught like that once and I was out to Walgreen's buying prefilled.

When I refill, I also add 18-22 drops down the side (I've tried every other method but decided this was best for me). Blanks can handle a few more. I actually set up an assembly line, add 10 drops and put it at the end of the line so that much can be absorbed first. Then round two gets another 8-12 drops, depending on how much it can hold now without puddling. Put them in a box and use as needed during the week. So most end up sitting for at least 4 hrs to 4 days.

Number of drops also depends on the bottle I'm using - whether it comes with an eyedropper or bottle with it's own dripper tip. Some make bigger drops than others.

I also clean with baking soda. I hate the term "going green", but that is pretty much what I have done when it comes to cleaning...because it's safer and a whole lot cheaper.

Definately save some for refilling. It will save you a few dollars and hold you over til new ones come in. And since I refill with the same flavor I don't feel the need to clean them first. And since each might get refilled only 5 or 6 times before I toss, there is much build up to worry about. I don't use thick/dark juices.

It just keeps me busy is all lol.. gives me a break from people I have to deal with on a daily basis.. no ambition lol.

You are more ambitious than I. I have some cartos lying in a box that I have told myself I will clean eventually. So far I have managed to avoid it, but I do hate waste, so we'll see.:D

Poor ole Tom - He finally wandered away after he stopped seeing his reflection. Don't worry SandySu - Even though I don't seem to fear the wild ones (except bears ... oh, and spiders  ) I have a healthy respect for critters that are in "territorial mode". This is the time of year with the toms establish/re-establish territories. Best to give 'em a wide berth - like deer in the rut.

I did enjoy the two links though!!

Konstantine - you stay the heck away from my birdie! trouble.gif
