I don't know about up there but here they're known as the "Florida Panther" and on the endangered list. They're the exact same animal. I used to keep up with how many were in the state but haven't lately. I've seen prints on the beach at the Canaveral Shores National Park but I've only seen two cats in my life. They've got a broad range here and it's getting harder for them to roam it with "civilization" encroaching. When I lived just south of Jacksonville we had one that would come by twice a year and let out a scream that would make your skin crawl at night but nobody ever saw it. I saw one in my headlights crossing I 95 between Titusville and Daytona at about 3 in the morning and got a pretty good look. Awesome animal. I saw another in Sanford by the river, again crossing the road, with a kitten in her mouth. Guess she was moving her litter for whatever reason. One of those Kodak moments when you don't have a Kodak. I don't need a photo except to show. I can close my eyes and picture it all over again anytime I want. Oh, and it's interesting to me Rave.

That is an amazing story to hear! They are fantastic animals, and I can't imagine seeing one in the wild. The closest that I've gotten is playing with a couple of cougar kittens at a wildlife art show where I was exhibiting. With the way that our deer population has exploded here, I would think that the local farmers would welcome them. Experience has taught me that this will not be the case. They will be shot on sight just as coyotes have been. I do understand that they are worried about their stock animals and pets, but our environment needs predators to thrive. They have been demonized.

I hope you can get a photo to share with us.

Oh, that's not likely. I've only been able to get two pictures of coyotes, and I've been here for a long time. Predators are so secretive, and very difficult to photograph. And ... I'm none too stealthy these days.

Good Evening, been a while since I've been on here. Just wanted to give a bit of advice. If you ever have to throw things in containers to prepare to evacuate your home, keep track of your e-cig stuff. So happy to be in my home when so many don't have one any more, but wish I knew where the rest of my batteries and chargers were.

Oh gees - how awful for you. I'm so sorry. That would be horrible. Hope everything turns out okay.

Today is day 7 or is it 8 without analogs ... i guess it doesn't matter. I'm in heaven. Walked nine holes this morning. Vaped a bit here and there while playing. It took the place of my old stinkies or a cigar. Shot a 38 and drank 40 oz. of water. Been doing a little bit of running and playing tennis (hadn't done that in 15 years). Lungs coming back. Energy coming back. Tomorrow morning I start my training for a 10k that is on Sept 8. To top it all off, my niece tried my Volt last night and after one drag ordered her starter kit from SI. What a weekend!

Burned over 900 calories this morning playing golf and had a decent shot or two :) Managed to drive a par 4 in one. This has been a game changer in just a week. I can't imagine what things will be like in a month.

Wow!! Congratulations!! Now - Imagine what it will feel like in three years. *look at my join date*

It is sooo worth it, and it gets easier and better the longer you stick with it. I have absolutely no desire for a cigarette now, and haven't in literally years.

Trail cameras aren't that expensive anymore. I think if I had a big cat around here I'd own one....just sayin...lol.

I'm thinking about trail cameras, but I thought I might contact the Indiana DNR and see if they may be interested in setting some up. I got a lot of forest here.

Thank you. I can already see signs of my body thanking me. With the four 100+ degree days we have coming here, I am sure I will be thankful to have clearer lungs and more stamina. Funny little thing too.... I haven't smoked at work or during the day in YEARS. So, when I took out my Volt last week to take a drag, someone looked at me like "wtf?" He said "When did you start smoking?" I said, "I quit last week." The quizzical look on his face was priceless.

That would be better yet. Bet they got top quality equipment and if they go for it it won't cost you. I still want to pick one up for around here. No big cats but always plenty of critters.

Yes, I hear coyotes all the time at night, but never see any in my neighborhood in daytime. I worry about my cat going out at night. No wildcats around here, as far as I know, though some black bears have been sighted in the Finger Lakes National Forest, which is close by. We have lots of deer, and I think most people who garden would like to see them gone, but I enjoy seeing them go by the house, even grazing in the yard.

Here's a photo taken in my yard, near the edge of the place we park the cars. You may even be able to see the out-of-focus edge of my car in the lower left corner.

I've always love that photo Sandy. That is so priceless.

I hear the coyotes every night here - and I love it. They keep the rodent population down. I've flushed a couple when I was morel hunting, but never got a photo. I think that we heard a bobcat one night when we were camping. It was pretty distant, but it sounded like a woman screaming. We were all so concerned that David even drove to the closest neighbor to see if everything was okay. You never see bobcats either (almost never), but they live in virtually every type of natural habitat.

Oops! I didn't realize I had posted that deer photo before. Sorry to repeat myself.

I doubt we have bobcats here. I never heard a scream like that at night. I did hear something weird about a month ago. I thought it was a coyote trying to kill my cat. The neighbor's dog was barking furiously. I went out in the dark with a flashlight, calling my cat and searching in the spot where the sound had seemed to come from. Nothing. My cat showed up the next morning with not a scratch on him. I have no idea what it was, but I think it could have been something killing something else. We have foxes around here, too. I spot them crossing the road while I'm driving every once in a while. Rabbits scream when they're in danger, but this was more a deeper growl kind of howl, like nothing I've ever heard or could identify. Who knows what it was.

As for the sound of screaming like a woman being killed, ever hear a peacock?

Somewhere in my printed photo archives I have several pictures of a coyote that decided to follow us down a trail in Yosemite National Park. I was astounded at how bold the animal was. Sadly, I suspect the reason it was so bold was because it had come to expect handouts from tourists. :(

Around here, if animals act uncharacteristically, it scares me. We have rabies among wild animals. Raccoons are notorious, but a couple of years ago, a rabid fox bit a little girl's hand and wouldn't let go. He had to be shot to get the child free. This happened right in town, too, not out in the countryside somewhere. Wild animals are supposed to be afraid of people and run from them. If they don't, there's something wrong, whether it's disease or tourists. Those animals are the most unsafe.
