Thanks Awsum. I am an only child so my siblings were/are my pets. Being the only kid is tough b/c you can't get by with anything. No one ever believes the pet did anything. For example my Mother would say,"Clean your room" and I tried my best to tell her I cleaned it but my dog messed it up. She NEVER believed me,but my dog was a poodle and he DID drag out stuff.

Raynes, I agree with Raven and Awsum here. You can't blame yourself for this. You were in fire mode at the time and, as Awsum said, the dog was responding on instinct. Please don't place blame on yourself.

Keep your eye on Pomp, but I wouldn't be surprised if Pomp was more shaken up than anything. Give it time and keep your thoughts positive. We're here if you need to talk.

Can Pomps shut his kidneys down on purpose if he wants to Blues? Can cats do that?

Welcome :)

It doesn't sound "out there" at all to me,,,,,,

I had a friend die a year ago from smoking,,,,,,,

I dreamed that she came to me and told me to quit smoking and that I HAD TO get an electronic cigarette,,,,,,

I got one.

Now THAT'S out there!

NO IT IS NOT !!! I believe that when our loved ones die they become our guardian angels. Actually I know they do. Rave,Awsum and a few more remember me telling about my riding accident. The day it happened I had saddled Cutter and heard someone shout NO !! It was so clear I came to the house thinking that someone had drove up or that Randy was at the barn calling for me. No one was around.
If I had listened to that voice and my gut I would have never gotten hurt.

I have never heard of or saw a cat do that. Kidney difficulties is a very common ailment in cats. Here at the ranch we have been able to maintain a quality life in cats for as much as two years by administering subcues. And after a while the cat will become quite comfortable with the whole process.

High BUN and creatnine typically show kidney problems. That can be checked through a blood sample.

So how can I tell or is there anyway to tell if Pomps is going through renal failure without labwork?

Last update on Pomps for tonight. He's resting comfortably in a box with a soft fleecy blanket under him on Ronnie's bed. He won't drink anymore tuna juice I just tried but when I walked in he lifted his head and perked his ears. His feet feel warmer than they did and he's walking around some Ronnie said.
Pomps is in God's hands and whatever God decides that's OK just as long as he isn't suffering and he isn't.
You guys are so very special,THANK YOU for everything.

Raynes - I'm sorry for your kitty troubles. Cats are very resilient. Just keep Pomps in a quiet spot, put some water out for him and hope for the best. He doesn't need food for a day or two. It isn't up to you now. Just support the little guy by giving him some time, a p;ace that is warm and feels safe and making sure he has water for tonight and tomorrow morning.

We all do the best we can to take care of our animals. We have had a couple of incidents here that I won't trouble you with the details about but...well....sometimes stuff happens despite our best efforts. We are only human after all and not perfect. I know you feel bad but don't beat yourself up.

Let us know how he is doing in the morning.

I completely understand. I had an imaginary dog and my mother wouldn't believe me either.

Speaking of cartomizers, does anyone know when the short black blank cartomizers will be back in stock? SI hasn't stopped making them have they?
zzzzzzzzzzzzzvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr) Sorry,Millie is telling Blues and Rave hi.

I asked them about that yesterday in the online chat. Answer is yes, they will be getting more but they can't say when.

A little moral support for Raynes and Pompeii. One of my cats was sick a couple of months ago, and I know it can be difficult to know whether you're doing the right thing - what with their inability to tell you what's wrong and all. The fact that you're worried tells me you're a good pet owner, and I respect that. I wish you the best.

I know what it's like to try to adjust to a new vet, too. When we moved from Oklahoma, we left the marvelous Dr. Smith behind, and went through four doctors here in Oregon before we found one we liked. A veterinarian has to know how to treat both the animals and their people, and some just can't manage both. Of course, a 45 mile drive suggests you may not have quite so many options to choose from...

I know you've had your vet visit, now, but I think you probably would need lab work to check for failing kidneys. The BUN and creatinine levels Bluesman mentioned should be relatively routine and inexpensive - I think they're done as part of a basic CBC like you'd get at an annual checkup - and if you get them tested periodically, you'll have a baseline for comparison. You can watch for things like increased water intake, urination frequency and the like. I should disclaim I have no medical background, but one of my cats has apparently abnormally small kidneys, so I've tried to read a bit about it.

Thank you so much Awsum,I was trying to beat you to it this morning.
Pomps drank almost 15cc of tuna juice this morning. When I got up I couldn't find him.Ronnie said he got of his box on his own and off the bed so that's where we are.
However, I DID wake Dr Hernandez up to tell him the news this morning and asked him about the kidneys. He reassured me that Pomps was Ok surgical patients went 24hrs without food or water,Pomps is drinking so all will be well in that area, and he is still moving. That he is still alive means there is no bleed he's probably banged up.
I've got stuff I have to do today and I have to work tonight. I'll keep you posted as I can. Thanks again for everything

Raynes, there are other symptoms, but those symptoms can mean other things as well. Also cats are very good at hiding things. A cat could be well into renal failure before you even notice it. Labwork is the best first step to identify problems with kidney functions.

Loss of appetite, weight loss, drinking more water, urinating more often, draggy, inactivity, dry coat these are all symptoms. But you don't want to make a decision on just those symptoms.
