ah.. packabowl! I knew someone else around here hadda do the DIY computer thing :)

I still have my original XP installation discs and the service packs on CD (yep.. I did use acronis before hubby pushed me into windows 7) It's been a couple years and I still am not happy with it's behavior.. acting like microsuck owns my computer and not me... not letting me access stuff - even after I take ownership of the files and folders. *grumbles*

Hubby's getting ready to either revamp his lappy or just build a new one from scratch.. it's on its last circuits now - getting slower and slower no matter what I do to clean it up. He's the hardware geek.. I'm the software geek.. he builds.. I install (except his drivers.. he can do that himself)

I have a couple of wired mouse(s) but I prefer the wireless. Have used the wireless for years, I like the sensitivity and response time much better than the wired. I also have a wireless mouse on my desktop PC. Don't have to worry about the cord catching on anything or using mousepads. Any surface will do.

wireless all the way for me too.. kbd and mouse. I can sit 8 feet from the computer screen.. SPLIT keyboard in my lap and do my thing.. legs extended out in front of me and comfortable - My vision is crap up close so this works for me.
darn logitech quit making my favorite keyboard mouse combo tho.. can barely find them on amazon anymore.

Hate to hear about the troubles you are having with your computer. Here is a tip for next time you upgrade. Use Acronis. This is a back up software that takes an image of your computer. So if you change operating systems and you do not like it, You put in the Acronis disk and reimage you hard drive back to you default operating system. Where you left off. Also your computer did not come with a disk. If you have a disk then that disk should have Windows 7 with the drivers. But I guess that Asus wants more money. If I have to pay $50 for
to fix, then I would ask for the physical disk. So I would not pay for it again.

I made a set of recovery DVD's to reimage my pc. It took 10 DVD's but it's worth it. If for some reason, I have an issue with it. At least I can take it back to it's original state. Also got an external HD to back up files. I need to do an update, it's been a couple of months since I've done it last.

With that kind of review, next time I need a mouse, I'll definitely consider one. Thanks!

They want fifty bucks for the disk and it includes their bloatware. Some of it might be useful at some time, but most of it is junk. I guess I'll download and install Win7 if I can find a download for it. Worse case is to buy a CD. I am usually very careful with OS changes, I spent 15 years in IT as an admin, so I know the pitfalls. For some reason, that I can't explain, I assumed (and you know what that does) that Win8 was going to be the cats meow and the dogs woof. Instead it's the cats woof and the dogs meow.

I regularly image my OS drive on the XP machine, Ghost still works for that, too much installed to want to rebuild that one from scratch, but since this thing was "pristine" I didn't bother with that which was my mistake and being too optimistic.

When Windows 8 first came out. It was suppost to be the cats meow. People were all over this. Then reviewers came out and said it takes alot of getting used too. Later I have been hearing they liked Windows 7 better, Windows 7 is not a resource hog. Then other companys that write software is having trouble making their code work for Windows 8. Then the big kicker is that Microsoft wants to make Windows 8 porprietary to thier software.

To me that spells T R O U B L E

For me I will wait on Windows 8. I might get used to Windows 8, but the bug need to be fixed!!!!!!!!!!

Have you ever looked at TigerDirect? Here's a link for an inexpensive Logitech wireless keyboard/mouse combo $39.99. Of course they have more expensive combo's as well. Check this website:

The best thing I di was make myself as the administrator. Then (can't remember) did five steps to unlock everything. No more worries about unable to access or change settings, documents, and ect!!!
Get CCcleaner. Its a good program.
I am both a hardware and a software geek:D

Best thing is to get a 32 gig thumb drive. Then you will not need to make copies on 10 disks. Then later add a new back up. When it gets full you then can delete the old backup.

Same here on the back up.

Here's another winter scene I took at the golf course.

IMG_0065_zps06cdfc3b.jpeg

At the moment, this is not how it looks here, though. Everything's melting, and there are big patches of bare ground. Unfortunately, our driveway has turned into ice or slush, depending on the temperature and time of day. The house casts a perpetual shadow there, so it's always the last to melt, which makes getting to the cars tricky.

No snow here. Like the picture though. Love to go Sleigh riding. Like to try snow boarding!!

This is re. the wireless mouse. Why should I be wary of recharging it when the battery dies? How does a person do it safely?

Nothing wrong with the charging. Its just when you charge the mouse you can't navigate windows. Unless they now can be charged
and operated at the same time.

That is the one bad thing about Windows 7. Only the admin can "share" files/folders and allow new program downloads. If you have files transferred over from XP, the default is set to not share files. It would be a pain, but if you still have XP on the old computer, set all of the file folders to be shared before copying them to the PC with Windows 7. If you have more than one user account on your Win 7 computer, you should disable the secondary account. Just make sure that the major account is set for administrator before doing that.

JoAnnw is right about XP set folders on share. On Windows 7 go to c/ users right click on your user name. Propertys and in security tab
hit the advance tab and give youself full controll. This is one of the steps.

Oh. I have a Mac. No Windows. Do they have wireless mice for Macs? They must. I guess I'll ask my brother who's my computer guru.

Just be wary of charging the mouse when the battery dies!!!!

I usually have to change batteries twice a year. There is a light on top of the mouse that is normally green. When the battery begins to run low, it will turn red but it doesn't stop right away. I haven't been caught with a dead mouse yet. I have a newer smaller wireless mouse for my laptop and the battery lifespan is 18 months. So far, so good. Also forgot to mention... I'm a lefty and I have a left-handed wireless mouse on my desktop. The shape matches my hand in the way that it is shaped... but since I'm used to a right-handed world, I switched the right and left click buttons to stay the same as the regular mouse since that is what I've always known.

um... why don't I get a mac? overpriced.. propritary software, icons! I can't stand icons.. icons are for children that cannot read yet...

hubby builds our computers.. we don't buy them.

I got my mom win 7 when it first came out. After a month she told me she wanted a Mac. She's been happy on her Mac air. Now I'm the one suffering with win 7. I'm a Mac and Linux girl all the way.
