Well, just so you know, calcium (your eggshells) does not dispense into the compost as you may think. It doesn't break down into a useable mineral for your plants, in other words. So you are best buying a good kelp/seaweed powder for that, and mix according to directions. Not only will it help set fruit, but it will give your plants the needed calcium.
Also, moisture needs to be very evenly dispensed while the plants are forming fruits, all the way til they are ready to pick. If this is a back woods plot, perhaps you could find a way to set up a sprinkler system on a timer if watering times become an issue. This also helps with the blossom end rot.

I did have some issues with ants.. the natural insecticides using hot hot hot hot pepers and soap didn't work.. so said screw it and began using 7 dust.. a little too late.. but it seemed to do the trick. It was a decent sized area.. trying to make it even larger.. I have been clearing out brush and fallen trees. I want some more corn! Been making some 'trash can compost' adding egg shells and coffee grounds along with leaves pine needles, veggies, fruit.. root end rot is supposed to be from a lack of calcium in the soil. I had some very nice sized tomatoes but they all ended up rotting grr.

Dude!
VINEGAR*, it always works for ants, spray the surfaces around the place you want to protect, ants hate vinegar, vinegar smell, vinegar traces (even tiny amounts)..

*If you have terminator style ants then only a shotgun and fire will help.

For an effective incecticide you can also use guess what.... Nicotine! Spray on.

Sounds like a regular farm sized plot Gorm! Down here insects are a major issue. And because Florida has sand instead of soil, I have to plant in raised beds. Did you have insect problems? I refuse to use insecticides, I don't want to hurt any butterfly caterpillars.

I use Sevin when I have to and soaked tobacco spray. I keep compost but for fertilizer I have a garbage can. I fill it with water then dump a bag of composted cow manure in it and stir it frequently. Let it settle and dip the water to water the plants with. I change the cow a couple of times a season and dump the dregs in the compost. I feel about the same as comercial fertilizers as insceticides.

well I figured it would always stay at the top anyway and was trying to cut down on the stickies I removed one and merged 2 together...this is now back in the stickies making a total of 13 stickies ....a lot of the other more popular forums have about 12 .... so that's it no more changes to the stickies either way.

How come this got un-stickied?
