thanks guys for the support. How do prepaid cards work ? dont you have to give them some kind of info to either a bank acct or other card to get the funds onto the prepaid ? I will lower 1 card to only $100 limit and use it. might be done with paypal after this. I used the Debit Paypal Card , and the only thing I have used it for lately is online ecig. might have to go back to checks and just wait on the stuff. uuuuggggh!
Or maybe just phone in your orders from now on?
...wondering if you might have a bot in your computer that snagged your card # when you entered it.
You can also get a VISA gift card. $4.95 one-time fee and non-refillable, but at least it wouldn't be tied into anything...you register the card and they don't ask for your SSN. Refillable debit cards ask for your SSN.

I didn't know about these scanners they could use, but of course, my first question is how those scanners would get the security code off your card. You know, those 3 numbers on the back of your card that you have to type in when you order something online? They can't, apparently. And a cheap fix, according to an article I read at Credit and debit cards targeted by new scanning device : News : ConnectMidMissouri.com is to wrap your cards in aluminum foil. So, if the purchases were made where the security code needed to be used, then it's likely the card wasn't scanned. I think it's probably someone's getting into people's computers, maybe that way they can know what you type, as someone mentioned. Then they'd know the security code, too, wouldn't they? Probably the best thing to do is be sure your virus software is up to date. The Walmart card sounds like a good idea, though I resent having to pay for the privilege of spending money, even if it is only $3 a month. And I guess that'd mean trips to Walmart to put money into it every time you wanted to use it. For some of us, where Walmart isn't close by, that'd be annoying and time-consuming. But that article said bank debit cards are the most vulnerable of all, so that's not a solution either.

It seems every time I turn around, there's more theft via computers than yesterday! I guess the only solution is to be sure your computer is as secure as you can make it or to never purchase anything online or with a credit card in a store. What a drag!

I don't use my card for online purchases or bill pay. So I have never typed in the number. Once your card is scanned or whatever they do....... they duplicate the card with fake numbers on the back and can take it into walmart or any store and use it like it is theirs. They don't have to have the 3 digit number. On my of charges was to a truck stop for $400. and my card was in my purse!! but they were able to use it in Virginia to get gas or whatever they used it for.

After reading this stuff about credit card theft, I went to Walmart and got a card.
They had two to choose from: One's a Visa (with a Visa logo) and one is a Walmart MoneyCard. After reading the jacket on both, I couldn't see any difference.
I got the Walmart one, so I'll try to describe that experience.

The card costs $3 and you can fill it at the register. KEEP THE RECEIPT. You'll need it later.
Next, you can either call a phone number or go to walmartmoneycard.com. I did the website.
You are asked for the card number, the activation number (it's on the receipt), and your SSN.
After that, you are asked for your mailing address and other info.
You can create an account on the website in order to track your balance and stuff.
You are also asked whether you want direct deposit from your paycheck (no thanks).

The card is now ready to use. This is a temporary card and cannot be refilled. Walmart will send you a permanent card to use. Takes 7-10 days to get the permanent one.

They charge $3 per monthly service fee.
It costs $3 extra to put more money into the card if you go into Walmart to do it.
The card can be used anywhere Visa debit is accepted. From what I can tell, this is no different than the other Visa card I looked at.

That's just my experience. Please read the jacket of the card before you buy.

There was one slightly scary thing about this experience. When I filled in my info on the website, I didn't mention being married or anything. When I went to log in, there were questions I had to answer. One of them was "What month was your wife Susan born?" That kinda threw me. How they got that info, I don't know.

As long as I'm yakking here in the echo chamber, I might as well mention what I just ordered with my new credit card.
I got a pack of comfort tips, a carrying case, 3 pkgs of blank carts and passthrough batt.

Of course, if SI had some pity on poor, poor, pitiful me, they'd process and ship it today. *sniff sniff*. I figure it's the least they could do considering what an awful week I've been having.

(If any of this works, Imagine, tell me which parts were most effective. I'll re-use them later)
