Blues thanks so much for sharing Bill's story. I've never been good at expressing myself so all I can say is "Thank you" for being you.
You all have a GREAT night.
Sandy I'm praying you heal soon and don't let the pain get so bad before you take a pain med.(That's the nurse in me).

Kicco you still give me WAY to much credit HUGS

Coulda fooled me. :)

no, the horse needing a home is another horse at the farm, a mare. she was boarded there, but not long after she arrived, her owner ran out of money to pay her board. she offered the mare to the barn owner, who agreed, not that she really needs another horse. the mare cribs and refuses to load into a trailer. but the real problem is that she has a big swelling on her face -- a tumor maybe -- and 2 bad teeth, which probably have caused an infection, so her nose runs constantly. the barn owner was told that $1000 would fix the mare up. but when the barn owner got an estimate, it was about $4000. the mare is in her teens, gentle to ride, a nice horse, but the barn owner can't afford the surgery. the mare probably couldn't be sold for more than about $1000 if she didn't need expensive medical attention. so no one is likely to take her, and i think it's quite possible that the $4000 may be just the beginning of medical expenses. things are never as cheap or simple as they could be. the barn owner consulted the vet who said for $100 she could do some dentistry and see if that helps. i haven't heard more since, but the barn owner was in one breath saying she might try the cheap stopgap measure, which may, imho, do nothing worthwhile, and in the next breath wondering if she should just put the horse down. i suggested asking equine rescues if they'd take her. the barn owner said she didn't think any of them would want to spend the money, either. i think some vets donate their services to rescues, though. but then, who wants a cribber who won't load? the horses are out 24/7 with shelters, but the horse is destroying the barn and shelters. maybe she cribs from the pain of the infection, but if that is cleared up, there's no guarantee she would stop cribbing.

the ideal situation would be if someone took the mare and invested in the medical care/operation she needs. no one wants to, of course, so she may be put down.
Gosh but I wish I could help if nothin' else in a donation. I would love to practice Monty Roberts and ? Trey Young's ? method of helpin them learn to load themselves!

Thank you, Raven. But the animals tell their own story, I just write the words.
Guess that makes you a fantastic interpreter!

I'm so sorry that you have to have surgery. Just thankful you can be repaired. Rule of thumb after my wreck is a safety helmet, riding vest and a whip.
I live by Murphy's Laws and have ever since I got plowed over -"If it can happen it will". You can have the best trained horses ever, impeccable ground manners and still get hurt. Feeding times and taking a horse out of a herd is when your at most risk for a wreck as you have found out.
My guess is that horse was gelded later in life.Maybe Penny was coming in heat. Or just maybe he sees himself as the "boss" of the herd hard to tell sometimes or he could be just plain jealous.
Where's the "What SHE said!" button when yah need one!

Raynes: have you heard of O'Shea's Law? ( Murphy was an optimist! ) Sorry ... couldn't resist!
I was lookin' close at the Sultan's coat tonight. I think I'm beginning to see a sheen on his shoulder! Still feels like "Cotton" compared to Molly's "Velvet" tho! Guess that sure beats 'gummy'!

We have hard freeze warnings for Thurs - Sat nights comin. I guess it's a good thing they are getting thicker coats. At first I thot it just the one but noticed they all are! Chance of snow showers along the border - just seems way to early for that stuff!

RAYNES: Your response to SandySue says: give credit where credit is due!
It rang true too! I was wondering if there was shipping fever in that area. That is sad to see when they get that and their heads swell ... also - this group of feisty guys seem to have more upper respiratory stuff and nasil discharge than the others that have been around this season ... So I vote w/ your analysis. Just makes sense ... tho I've noticed bumps startin on a couple and missing hair on a few faces this past week. Wonder what mange looks like - it strange ...

Konstantine, I just want to thank you publicly for making your niquid testing kit available. :vapor:

I was down and out for about a week, due to nicotine overdose. :grr:

I was using up load of samples that I'd gotten from Honeyville Vapor quite a while back. They had a sale, 39 cents, for a 5ml bottle. Needless to say, I stocked up, about 80 dollars worth. Later came the Box Elder scandal. Honeyville Vapor it seems was part of Box Elder.

Anyway, to make a long story short, I figured I'd let everyone know that if you take a vape hit, and it knocks your socks off, don't do like I did and say, WOW, THIS IS GOOD SH@#!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, and keep vaping it!?! :danger:

I'd been thinking for over a year to build my own kit, but it was too much trouble.
I was thinking of buying Konstantine's kit when he first introduced it. It can wait.
So much for "closing the barn door after the horse gets out."

Folks, nicotine poisoning is not a pleasant experience.

A throat hit is a throat hit. If it's strong enough to make you cough and feel light headed, toss it, or have it tested and complain to the vendor.

Thanks again for offering the kit. I haven't got my lab set up yet. There's alot of stuff in that kit and well worth the price.

It finally arrived in yesterdays mail. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh Sandysu I didn't see your post today, so sorry to hear of you having to have surgery. I hope the upcoming operation goes without a hitch and you are on the mend quickly.
Bluesman - thankyou for sharing a part of your life story and what i believe is "your calling". I truly believed what i was reading was a story... until i read the part that you said welcome to your life. Loved hearing about Mitchell & Bill. Thanks Rave, it truly has been nice to have spent the week in quietness.
Have a great day and hope the volties who are hiding or away on holidays are keeping well also (outlaw, chucky, uncle, konstan, tina, laura) :)

Wow - I hope you're feeling better now 2tone. I remember well the Box Elder scandal, and I'm thankful that I never ordered from them or Honeyville. It could happen with other suppliers, so we need to be aware and vigilant.

Good Morning Volties!

I don't see any coffee around, so I made a pot. Help yourselves. :)

Sandy, they make an IUD for mares now. No joke it looks like an over sized marble.I watched my vet insert one the other day. Simple procedure and painless. You don't have to worry about the heat cycles. The only side effect is,that a mare may act like she is pregnant every once in awhile but that's very rare. Its been on the market about 5yrs now.
When I can slow down long enough I'm going to have it put in all my mares. My guys are all gelded but we have some idiots that live around here that have stallions and no mares.
Kicco, the respiratory infections you describe are very common. If one seems to be really stuffed up or if there is white thick drainage use vick's vapor rub in the edge of the nostrils like you would for a kid. Helps the sinuses to drain.ALSO alfalfa cubes are loaded with Vit C the greener the better. Guess my next question is, will the guy have a vet come out and look at them? My vet prescribes bactrim if the infection is serious. Just a suggestion here--keep your horses isolated from them and give them some alfalfa cubes to. Next question--have these horses been checked for strangles? Its very contagious.
Blues may know of more things you can do,that's all I can think of right off the top of my head.

Hi 2tone its nice to meet you. I'm sorry that you were ill, glad that you are well or atleast on the mend.
I've read about nicotine poisoning but what I read the symptoms (increased heart rate, dizziness) could also be a sign of other illnesses so my question is,Is there a definite symptom that alerts a vapor that they are ingesting too much nicotine?

I think the best "test" is see how much better you feel if you lower the nic level for even a few hours by adding a little pg/vg (easiest in a Clearo). That's why I bought some lower stuff. I just plain don't feel good if I'm antsy about something and vape too much 12 mg. Keepin it lower allows for the freedom to vape "at liberty"! I keep some higher stuff to bring it back up (just a few drops in da Clearo) but don't use that particular "all day".

My tummy just "didn't feel right" ... I'd already heard about too much nic (heck - smoking too many cigs - or even too much coffee - when I knew I'd be limited when I got where I was going did the same thing!) Now that I said that - I guess some of it is knowing your body. People that don't have GI sensitivities may NOT know depending on the initial symptoms. Trust your gut (pun intended!) ... :D

First - Sorry 2tone - meant to say Welcome! Not sure if I've met you ...
So - what's this Box Elder scandal? I can almost imagine from the name ...

IUD? Incredible! Respiratory: my Arab/Saddlebred (22 yrs ago) got that alot - musty dusty grass hay. Vet gave me some stuff & showed me how to do shots. I don't know if he'll do that - he'd spent a ton on one horse to vet treat and still lost it. He's out every morn before going to the feedmill - and treats stuff that he can. Yes - they all get wormed as they come off the trailer! He has a passion for horses. I know more oft than not he spends more gettin 'em back on their feet than what's returned.

The one that sounds sick won't let peeps near him. The herd has an auto fountain - which I still spray whenever I'm out there in hopes it will help. Also keepin the water level low to help keep it clear since it's apparently their mouthwash! Yeah - I've been concerned about my kids gettin exposed to somethin ... I'll have to check & see where I can find cubes! Thanks again for the info! You are a treasure Raynes!

I keep trippin over Stronglies & Strangles & Shippin Fever. Keep thinkin at first it's all the same disease - but know it isn't. Yeah - my kids are on the other side of the barn (sniff sniff - where I can't see them) - the youngster had Fever so he said she's safe from gettin it again. Sultan - doesn't seem to be bothered by any of that. I clean the water tank daily w/ Oxine diluted in spray bottle (none activated). I got started using it when we had chickens. Read about it's many wonderful uses in organics & poultry. Was contemplating locking the filly inside and 'foggin' her.
Fogging saved a duck w/ upper Respiratory illness. Just a few drops in water tanks keeps that clean & clear.

Gosh - need to get back to readin up on this stuff instead of readin ECF! Want to find that link again on Oxine - refresh the memory cells! So dang windy here today! Got the feed tank of hay inside.
Wish I had a little bigger area in the barn - I'd lock them in for a while and turn on the fogger! Also thought about doing a quick in and out of water 'rinse' of the hay before giving it to them to cut down the dust. Just won't work so well pretty soon - 44 here right now! Brr!

Have a great day Volties! Thanks for the coffee Rave! Really hits the spot today!
Keepin' fingers crossed after 4 showings (has to be a God thing!) this week that we get our place sold again!

Thank you, reptilr. I am glad you enjoy the animal stories. I'm not sure if I can meet the demand for more, but I'll certainly try.

I am a fortunate person to be in the position to live with animals and nature.

No, Raynes, you have done an excellent job of suggestions. I would simply echo you on isolating the horse, getting a vet to come there, and it may be an infection. Strangles move fast and easily. My first step would be isolate and vet care.

LOL I'm like Blues,My animals "tell the stories" I just write what they tell me to. I'm awkward when it comes to someone giving me a compliment or expressing words of comfort to someone. That sort of thing.

So am I, Raynes. I think it often drives Raven crazy.

More stories Blues PLEASE !!! Rave now I know why you love Bill so much.

More on the way. I am so glad you enjoy them.

Thanks for the info gang ... I would love to have a vet come out ... but not quite in a position to do something and the main herd isn't mine ... bummer. Doing what I can w/ Oxine at the water fountain and in the tanks for mine.

Here's the article if your interested in it. This was pretty interesting to me when I chicky's ...
My brother uses it in the incubator when he's hatching eggs.

The Many Uses of Oxine AH (Animal Health)

Off the check out the story Wuzzn't! Thank you! :)

I found and read the Box Elder scandal stuff. Scary. It just happened in 2011 to. Signs and symptoms of nicotine poisoning are the same for a lot of illnesses to except when a person starts to drool. Hmmm if a person was on an antipsychotic and a vaper as well a nurse would think it was caused by the antipsychotic med instead of excessive nicotine. Not likely to happen to have a psychotic vaper but it COULD.
Sometimes a curious mind is not a good thing.
I watched the videos as best as I could and I have to wonder what "controls" are in place to keep an incident like this from happening again?
