Sometimes I envy you folks in the "swing states". Living in a state with a "set in stone" voting record is politically boring and we never get to see the national candidates in person. When the outcome is preordained, they don't even bother to advertise and we're stuck with local candidates only, no star power at all.

"no star power at all." I got a good laugh out of that, awsum.

Heading into the busiest time of year at work. So, popping in to say HI! LOVE YOU GUYS! (I'm stealing coffee and not making a new pot - eek!) and GUESS WHAT?

Later!

/hugs all

What ? What? I cannot guess!

It was you that stole the last cup of coffee and didn't start a new pot???

Please define grown up? All of mine except the youngest are in college or still searching for what they want to be and even the oldest is still around every time I look up and she moved out 10 years ago. Sometimes I think they are just waiting for me to kick the bucket so they can all move back in. None are married one has been engaged several times. I think maybe I may have set a bad example for relationships being married 5 times but they all lived with me through it all. We even adopted a girl that was 13 who is now in college. I think kids are a life long project but I wouldn't have it any other way. Besides I figure when I get too old to function I will have plenty of help, I hope...

 good point!

grown up=old enough to leave alone for a week without worrying about the house burning down

I love my kids,,,,,,,but my oldest had a baby at 15 and they lived with us for years and my youngest was bi-polar,,,,,,I'm tired

Kids are lifelong,,,,,,and I agree, I wouldn't have it any other way,,,,,but it's still nice to be able to take off for a week or a weekend with my husband of 29 years.

My daughter loves her Kindle. I didn't buy my Android for the reader aspect. I wanted it for music and videos. I prefer an actual book to read, but I'm old and set in my ways. :glare:

Also, I got a great deal at 1 Sale A Day.

Lilac, I agree with you, there is just something about holding a book, and I'm old and set in my ways too.

It's simple. Just keep your backups handy and swap batteries. Check this out. Got this baby today in the mail. I finally am looking like I might know what I'm doing.

Good Morning Volties!!

Thanks for the coffee Awsum! :)

Marlou - I know exactly what you're saying about home phones being in danger of destruction during this pre-election period. If Mitt Romney calls me one more time, I'm going to file a police report for stalking. Just kidding, but I'm really tired of hearing from his campaign crew.

I'm sick to death of it too

AND the paper flyers that show up in my mail box every bleeping day,,,,what a waste of paper!!!

GAAH!

Mark Twain. Good stuff. Thank you for reminding me of that story.

Millie is doing well!!! Yay!!! All because of you Raynes. She just needs someone to love her.

Thanks for the compliment Blues, but I think Millie had to heal herself. Maybe I'm wrong here but I have a theory when it comes to any person or animal that has been abused that they have to work through it. Sure unconditional love plays a big part in that healing process but they have to work past that anger and fear.
Back in my barrel racing days a friend of mine bought a $5,000 young barrel horse. I had a bad feeling about this horse just watching the tapes of him racing but Jan insisted on buying him. What I saw as a "hard" look in his eyes, she saw determination. First time she ran him in the arena he unseated her and then attacked her breaking her lower back, collar bone and arm before the cowboys could get him off of her. Jan as busted up as she was kept screaming "DON'T KILL MY HORSE".!!! So I begged my boss George Montgomery and an old cowboy to intervene and get him.
Well we got him alright. That horse was of the Impressive bloodline X TB cross that went back to Fair Play. His name was Impressive Not. There was nothing about him that was impressive. He was not a handsome horse and his temperment was uglier than he was,but he was nothing but speed and power and to be as big as he was he could fly.The only good thing about him he was HYPP neg.
Since he was big he was started early, I don't know who trained him to run barrels but by the time Jan got him he was soured on barrels, and life in general. He hated people. We put him in Mr. Montgomery's high enclosed 60ft round pen and would feed him when he was at the far end of the pen for he was coming at you. It took two ppl. One to feed and the other to run and close the solid wood gate and Not would do his best to bust that gate. Never saw anything like him in my life.
When Jan got to where she could race again I traded my $800 barrel horse for Not. He stayed in that round pen for a yr. Mainly b/c it took me that long to get the nerve to take him out.
Not would go into rages,my guess is that he was pushed too hard, too fast and with that much temper in his bloodlines all that pushing was just like pouring gas on a fire. It took a few yrs before I could race him and I think the only reason he ran so well for me was he felt like he was paying a debt for his running sent me through nursing school. I never turned my back on him,I never could pet him he'd snap at me,but he ran for me.
When we were in the shoot before the gate opened,he'd turn and bite the toe of my boot. I still have that old pair of boots with his teeth marks in them.
I never did figure that horse out,I can't even say there was even a tentative bond, but I watched him work through his anger,he never lost that hard look to his eyes it was still there when he died.It was like he knew I was desperate for money at the time and he figured he owed me for saving him,IDK. All I know is love never fixed him like its fixing Millie.

I just wanted to show you a picture of what "spoiled rotten" looks like - just in case you've never seen it. Lexi loves her window seats. And she still looks sad.

Rave what have you been doing to Lexi? Poor thing is worn ragged !!! (I have a red bone that looks the same exact way).Just something about having to walk to the feed bowl and back wears them slap out

She's just a lazy bum. That suits me fine, cuz so am I. I guess it's rather typical of English mastiffs to sleep 20 hours a day. She does perk up when my son comes home from work. She gets all excited when he pulls up - crying and pacing. Then as soon as he gives her a greet petting, she'll thud down at his feet for a nap. Geesh.

Sandy, when you get ready to go out and work with Penny there are several things you can do,to make it safer for you. Have one or two friends with you carrying lounging whips, you can put the horse up in a stall before you get Penny out or even stall Penny first if that's an option.
After you've been in a horse accident you do become more gun shy. I'll be the first to admit I am. We just have to work through it. When you get to where you are able practice using that lounging whip. Set you a target like a piece of paper and "popping" that paper with your whip, then make your target smaller. The more accurate you are and the stronger you get the better the results are going to be on Penny's boyfriend. Its also a great confidence booster.
The dummy horse and I had a little better result today. I'll get that right leg over the barrel one day. Right now my male dogs are trying to teach me to mark my "territory" (I guess that's what they are trying to do),that's ok as long as they don't "mark" me.
We'll get there Sandy.

Lexi's hyper compared to Lucy,I'm lucky to get a tail wag unless it storms then she bays and I can hear her over my air conditioner, then I let her sleep with me,but she snores so LOUD she wakes me up.
All that excitement wears them out. We're too hard on em

Great story, Raynes. I enjoyed this!!!

No doubt it is the animal that has to work through its anger and fear. And all animals are different, just like people. Whether they progress and how fast they progress is a matter of their personality. It does give them a much better opportunity if we provide a rich and stable environment for them.

You do that and you are a testament to the giving of yourself to help others. You deserve a big pat on the back!!

Unfortunately,,,,,,

I think it's possible to totally ruin an animal. To abuse it to the point it will NEVER be the same, or trust humans, or be happy again,,,

humans have counselling,,,,,,in addition to the possibility of love and affection to help them along,,,,,but even some of them don't ever get past it, IMHO.
