*pokes nose in thread* like I need another thread to keep up with

hi all

:)

I'm a big fan of XP.. wish I could go back to it.. can't stand 7 - never made the stop at vista .. don't like that I have to *take ownership* of my own darn computer files and folders! Don't like that I cannot do a search for all files and folders created today in one click.. don't like that it won't let me in my settings folders.. don't like ~hidden~ accounts for microsuck helpers .. really cannot stand that UAC crap.
Will NOT go to windows 8.. I don't do mobile devices - my cell phone is just that.. a phone. No camera.. no texting.. no data plan.. just a phone, and it was darn hard to find too. (big button marketed to seniors phone) I don't do apps.. I don't want to do apps and I would prefer that my computer not have preinstalled apps that have to be removed.
If microsuck forces 8 on the world, I'm probably going to have to become a linux geek

Welcome, Opal. Why don't all you Windows people just get a Mac. I'm no genius, and my Mac works really well for me.

I like everybody's new pics. Also I am turning red in the face at all of your comments. I never considered myself handsome, just funny.

Actually I look better without the mustache, but Mrs. Wabbit tolerates it.

I had to crop them just to get them to load up on the forum. I don't know if I can do bigger. I'm always the one taking photos so I am not in too many pictures on this computer.

So, I did get my labeler but I once again almost went into heart failure when I found out how much a labeler is! I go to Office Depot since I am trying to spread the love around town and not always buy everything at one or two shops. $25 and $30 so I told the girl, geez, I wasn't planning on spending $30, I'll think about it.

Then, at Costco they had a very nice labeler for $27 so I bought it. Really, I though a labeler would be a $20 item, tops. Prices are outrageous now-a-days.

I suppose I'll live through my shopping ordeal. This labeler seems very nice. In fact it touts that it is a labeling system and it looks like a little typewriter. I needed it to be able to label my T3's and Nanos so I know what I have available for vaping and for my bottles of DIY. Any regular ink from a pen or a Sharpie just seems to come right off the bottles or tanks.

I found a Dymo labelmaker at Walmart for $18 to use for the same purpose. It included a tape cartridge but it was black print on white paper tape. I use that cartridge to label other things. I bought a cartridge that is black print on clear removable tape for the T3's and clearo's but I would like to find white print on clear tape for my black clearos and T3's. Still searching online for that one for Dymo brand. I've seen it for the Brother's but that was too pricy for me.

Whatever you do for an OS upgrade don't make the mistake I made and upgrade to Windows 8. Windows 8 is great of you want to turn your nice, high horsepower, wonderful, easy-to-use computer into a smartphone wannabe. I did find a utility that lets me boot directly into the traditional Windows GUI rather than the "Metro" GUI and that did help, but the darn pop-out menus are a pain in the tuchus to say the least and, unless you have a touch screen monitor, the "Metro" interface is useless crap. Then, if you have a touch screen monitor, do you really want lots of finger smudges all over that nice, crisp, clean, brilliant surface?

In my efforts to go back to Windows 7, which is what this laptop came with, I managed to wack the recovery directory and files in a moment of frustration. Now, if I want to go back to Windows 7, it'll cost me fifty bucks for the recovery CD from Asus or I'll just have to buy Windows 7 and be done with it. Thankfully, I haven't installed any real software on this thing yet so recoveryto Windows 7 will be painless in that sense.

My big desktop tower is still on XP-Pro, good, stable and easy to work with but I guess I'll have to upgrade that to Windows 7 before the end of the summer. How Microsoft ever thought Windows 8 was an "upgrade" is beyond my comprehension. It will never work in a business environment and to me is a complete waste.

Just my opinion, worth what you're paying for it. Your results and mileage may vary. No warranty or guarantee is expressed or implied.

I agree! I have Windows 7 and don't have any plans to "upgrade" to Windows 8. DO NOT want anything that looks like a smartphone. Heck! I don't even have a smartphone and don't want one... don't want an iPad either. Just give me my regular desktop, laptop and regular cell phone. Even my Kindle has the keyboard!

Hi Opal! Glad you decided to drop into Voltville! I had Windows XP Pro for years and loved it but it was on a very old pc and was getting very very slow. It could not be upgraded anymore. For the cost of rebuilding I got a new one with a larger HD but it came with the infamous Vista! Boy what a mistake. Before I retired, I took that computer on my job and my great techy coworkers upgraded it giving me Windows 7 & Office 10. It runs like a charm. Since then I got a new laptop that also has Windows 7 but my ex-coworkers told me to stay away from Windows 8 and I'm glad I did. It's funny... my little laptop has a massive hard drive and so much ram. Way more than my desktop which is huge.

I'm also in agreement with you about other electronic gadgets. My cell phone provider keeps sending me info about switching to a smartphone with data plan. Not for me. I may start looking at the basic "senior" phones too. I'm not a phone person when I'm home so I don't want to talk to anybody if I'm out unless it REALLY is an emergency. Sometimes I forget to turn it on when I'm out and hubby gets so mad with me about that. When I'm ready to go out, he'll tell me to turn the phone on.

Sitting down, facing forward.
To me a phone is just that, a telephone meant for voice communications, real time, with other humans. Typing on a touch keyboard is slow and awkward and I'm forever cleaning the screen on my tablet just from that. To me a smartphone has a hold button an more than one phone line. I used to be on the phone 10 t o12 hours a day with business, now I hate to use the da-n thing at all. Why would I want to "surf the web" on a phone with a data plan that is overpriced and, compared to my broadband fiber, slower than mud? To me it's a step backward not forward.
