I got one reply already. It's from the place before last where I boarded Penny. She said the round pen stays up by itself! I'm amazed. This is a person who does things the right way, so I think she would secure it if it was needed. However, she doesn't turn horses out in it as far as I know. When I boarded there, she just used it for training.

Let's see what the last place I boarded does. She doesn't use it for training but turns horses out in it.

If you lived here in Nevada I would pay you half a BUTTload of money to install for me but I guess I would have to settle for my handsome husband who knows how to do almost everything [can you tell I like him?] including almost all forms of electrical.

We could install 3phase 400V power industrial power supply and when the horse touches it, it will convert to BBQ. (mmmm horse meatballs)
Other horses will take example and would not even dare to go near the fence!

Or simply buy a high voltage do it yourself kit (around 14.000V with very few mA especially for applications like that) for 20 bucks and get 1km of conductive cloth tape for 50bucks and presto, poor man's effective electric fence.

Lizzie said she'd need a solar-powered fence charger. They are about double the price of the plug-in kind, I see. Unless Lizzie has the electrical expertise you do, Kon, I think she should get one made for the job. Here's a selection, just in case you want to see what the prices are like, Lizzie. They quickly learn they'll get zapped if they touch the fence, and they avoid doing that at all costs. I've gotten zapped by the electric fences a few times, and though it's not pleasant, it's not enough to knock you over. Also, a good way to avoid getting zapped is to always turn the fence off before you go fool with it to get the horse out of the pasture. I've been zapped when I got lazy and didn't do that, since if I was careful, the fence was set up so you could open the gate without turning it off. I wasn't careful and touched it, and got zapped.

But I can understand not wanting to deal with an electric fence if you don't have to. Still, I think it's probably cheaper and easier to set up than a board fence. If you ever decide to fence off a substantial pasture area, I think you may find that's the best option. BTW, never use barbed wire to fence horses in. It's an accident waiting to happen.

I don't think you need to have it installed by professionals. You buy a fence charger and connect it to the fence and to an electrical source. I think farm owners do this without help all the time. Still, the chargers cost quite a bit. And I think you'd want to do some research and get one people have had success with. I've known of people getting the cheapest one they found and the charger just never worked right.

Yeah, I'd be the one to get it for sure! I actually thought about putting a diaper on her. But I want her to realize she needs to go outside and do her business. I've never had such a strong willed dog like this one. She apparently has been doing this behavior for years.

Back to work. Break time is over. Trying to get the greenhouse straightened out and a few other miscellaneous items done.

Truthfully, at this point, I am leaning towards metla corral panels. Yes, it is more money but who ever said owning a horse would be cheap [even a miniature horse], we will still be paying the lights and the mortgage, the panels will hold their value, can be moved and would be easy to set up.

It wouldn't be so bad if she peed on the throw rugs. She pees on my fabric covered furniture. Once it soaks in, it's very hard to clean and will always have the scent (to dogs). I don't want Whisper picking up any bad habits.

It's not like this dog will be staying with you forever. I'd put a diaper on her and let the owners worry about it when they take her back. You are inconvenienced enough without having to train their dog, too.

Sometimes it's worth it to pay a bit more and have it be more convenient and functional. At least with the pipe fence, you won't have to electrify it.

Lizzie, did you look for the round pen pipes on Craigslist? Maybe you can buy one from someone, not new from a store. And keep checking in case one goes up on Craigslist after you checked the first time. You might save enough money that it would be worth it to travel and pick up the fence from someone a distance away. The person who answered about not needing to secure it to the ground bought one from someone in the area. I think she saved a lot of money doing that. And check online. I noticed that the ones I looked at said shipping was free. If their prices are better than locally, it might be worth ordering one and having it delivered.

My heart sinks to have to do this, but I have several friends with rescue dogs that say it's the best thing to do. Unfortunately she doesn't seem to get the message and wants to lay on the couch after she pees on it.

If I had the money, I'd send her to a kennel for the next week! What really gets me is that her human mom doesn't think of this as a bad thing. Of course, she isn't the one cleaning up after her either!!!

It's incredible that her owner doesn't see it as a bad thing! I guess she just let the dog pee wherever in the house she wanted to? Yes, keep her in the crate if that works best for you. Just count the days till the dogs are gone and say to yourself, "This, too, shall pass."

I know a dog who also doesn't seem able to control her bladder. The barn owner where I board Penny has 2 Jack Russell terriers. One bites people and the other pees when she gets excited, like if you say hello to her and pet her. Her owner has tried everything she can think of to break her of this, and nothing has worked. Fortunately, the biter likes me and hasn't tried to bite me -- yet. He came close once when I surprised him asleep in the tack room, but when he realized it was me, his aggression changed to wags and wanting to be petted. These are the first Jack Russells I've known, and I must say it has convinced me to never consider getting this beed of dog, though I'm sure there must be good ones out there.

She has been living apart from her soon to be ex husband, so she hasn't been around them much. Apparently the husband got tired of cleaning up after her and just let her do her thing. I really don't know the whole story as I've not spoken to the mother very much about this.

Jack Russell's can be little terrorists. I think it's a hit or miss with what behavior you get with them. The ones I've seen at the park are very aggressive when they don't get their way. They require much more training than most dogs, but they can be great dogs if you have the time and energy to train them.

They are not the type of breed I want either. Min Pins are high energy and can be stubborn so I don't want a dog that is levels above that!
