Silica is more porous than glass (glass is too but not that much, which is why it's used to store chemicals too) and cotton is useless.
More pores means more particles can be trapped inside making it possible to "catch" carbon particles of other stuff inside (even mould) faster.

I know silica isn't the best choice, but it's better than cotton and cheap enough that replacing/rebuilding when it gets gunked up is no big deal.

Maybe I'll give a video a try, just for laughs. I've always wondered why the camera is mounted in front, not above or behind for all these videos. I know a lot of people are using webcams built into their laptop or monitor, but still, a lot of people have to be using a remote style webcam or even a real camera. What's the big deal? If I do one, I'd rather keep my ugly phizz out of the frame anyway!

Got to run out to Tractor Supply and get a snatch block, a couple of clevis pin shackles (keep your mind out of the gutter, Konstantine) and some canned food for Bo, like a case. Then run to Home Depot or Lowes and get some stain for a little project I'm working on, a stand for all my vaping devices that looks nice enough to keep on the end table.

A snatch block is a heavy duty pulley, rated around 500kg or greater load, that can be attached to a line because the hanger for the pulley is two pieces. A clevis pin shackle is sort of an omega shaped ring like device that has a threaded pin, clevis pin, that closes the open end of the omega which allows it to also attach anywhere along a line. Both are used for rigging or lifting and you probably know what they are under different names since you do some climbing.

Well, I pulled the trigger and ordered a total of sixty feet of Kanthal, twenty feet each of three different gauges, and twenty feet of silica wick, ten feet each of 2mm and 3mm. Now, stalking the mail person, then seeing if my eyes and fingers can work together well enough to rebuild a few things.

I saw a "great", highly recommended, video the other day of a guy rebuilding a T3. As usual the accent made it hard to understand and the camera work was "wonderful". It was done in close-up, 1080P, with excellent focus on the rebuilders bitten off finger nails. All of the key parts of the rebuild somehow seemed to occur out of view of the camera. Why do people post stuff like that?

I may try to do a video of a rebuild after I get good at it and, if I do, will use a tripod and shoot from over my shoulder or above and behind my head so what is being done is visible from my viewpoint. The D3200 takes excellent 1080p video so I should be able to do it without a problem....assuming I confident enough about rebuilding anything.

I saw a post a few days ago about someone trying hemp for wicks. I never saw the outcome and forgot which thread it was in. Doh!

I thought making my own juice was scary, but rebuilding sounds even scarier! I figure I'll take that plunge eventually. Looking forward to seeing your video Awsum!

Just made a batch of Lizzie's Asian RY4 recipe and doctored it up a bit. I have it humming away in the jewelry cleaner. Going to go through a few more rounds (3 mins each) then get out of my pjs and take Whisper and our house guests to the park (their final journey there). I'm going to start cleaning a bit, but leave the floors until they leave. Since my nose is working again, I can smell urine in the living room. Going to have to find the source and clean the heck out of it. It never fails that when I help someone out, I end up doing way more work than I ever expected. Hopefully karma will smile upon me or just leave me be!!! :)

The sun is out here and smiling down! Have a great day volties!

The sun is finally out here! All, well al but a little, of yesterdays snow is gone and it's 57 outside. Gotta get out and put a few temporary climbing pegs in the tree I want to cut down and get a rope higher up to make certain it only goes where I want it to when I make that felling cut.

I couldn't get a snatch block with the split hanger, so I got one with a removable axel pin instead. That'll work for the pivot point for my felling rope and the clevis pin shackles will let me attach to the tree and the trailer hitch on the Jeep very easily. I'll post a picture of them for you, Konstantine, I'm sure you've worked with them or have them.

Hello All, Happy Saturday. You all seem to be busy and productive, I am having a lazy, can't-seem-to-get-started day. At least the snow is slowly melting here and there are patches of bare ground. Come on Spring!!!

Tail, if you find out where the odor is coming from and it's something you can move outside, let it sit in the sun for a few hours. I like to do that when I do heavy cleaning, the sunlight and fresh air just seem to have magic properties, at least that's what my Grandma taught me. I'm glad you will soon have your space back to enjoy with Whisper.

You two techies are so cute. I think I am learning something:)

I like your idea of a video that is clear and really shows what you are doing, Awsum.

I like that idea too Lizzie! :)

Awsum... hope you do a video and post it here first to get our honest opinion. I need all the help I can get.

It'll be a while before I try my hand at a video. I just ordered the supplies and have to wait for them to get here, but I already got a shipping notice!

Here I am about twenty five feet up, setting another temporary climbing peg. My goal was to get the rope up in the big crotch area about ten feet above me in this photo.

Here are the snatch block and clevis pin shackles, snatch block on the left, clevis pin shackles on the right. For scale purposes, the pins of the shackles are 3/8" diameter.

I'm getting dizzy just looking at that photo. I have vertigo when I look over a cliff:) I want to see the Grand Canyon but from back about 40 paces.

I totally admire your courage and your willingness to get the job done, Awsum.

I've never been afraid of heights, in fact I love climbing tall structures, but the physical strain of holding position in a tree is far greater than on a tower since, rarely, are there two branches at the same level to act as a comfortable rest. My legs were getting really tired, I guess because I haven't done this in such a long time and I am a year or two older now.

I have done that for six to eight hours at a time, but on a real tower at 100 meters. There was a crows nest at 50 meters so I could climb down to rest, but then had to climb back up to work again, just wasn't worth it. Even with very heavy soled shoes, the arches take a heck of a beating.

Wow Awsum... Man of many talents! My question... How did you get from the top of that ladder to where you are in that tree? I assume by just pulling yourself up but those branches look mighty small to bear your weight to get there. You are a brave soul, especially getting back down. I guess this is just another "walk in the park" for you though...

Awsum, you are brave to climb in that tree. Please be careful.

theres a you tube vid..kanger T3 head rebuild by grandmacdaddy..he talks about heating wire first cause of machine oils...pre burns this wicks...its not a good vid..but please watch for me..let me know your opinion thank you...plus kanger T3 bottom coil by snaredrummer I found was a good vid..gave me the most tips...I did first rebuild mainly to see if I could..and yes its very easy once your fingers get around it..im mainly wanting to just change coil wicks and top wicks for now...but the problem is the fibre glass wick wont thread through the coil..it frays ..so cotton wool taper...is easy to thread in....and a full 2ml for top wick...
