SO took King to the vet yesterday to get his blood tested and nails cut, we do it every 6 months so he can stay on his meds. The park is a right turn out the driveway and the Vet is a left. He is ecstatic to see the leash and car keys and jumps into the car. Turn left he startles a sec and turns around and looks out the back window and howls all the way to the vet. We get him to go in the door and he is ok and greets them with a good attitude. gets weighed, still 110lbs. Get into the little room and he puts the muzzle on fine. They put the needle in with one person holding him and he starts kicking, ok bring in another person and try again, nope but the whites of his eyes start turning red. Ok lets try the back legs and see if it is easier, nope. Finally after 3 pokes and 4 tries four people are holding him and we get it done. There is no way they were going to cut his nails after that. We get charged as usual an extra $15.00 difficult dog fee. Plus he is stiff from fighting. He has been this way since his accident and hates to have his legs touched by strangers. Last night dad asked why we don't just tranquilize him when he goes. Duh, why didn't I think of that and whats more why hasn't the vet?

Here
Omg, Becky. The page actually loads and stuff.

There were a few times that I came in just to read some updates (ya know, snoop) but quickly left because each page loaded so slow. Anywhoo, still not vaping. This Sept was 2 years smoke free. Heather is still smoke free. Jeff is still smoking.

I got a new kitteh. It's been almost 2 yrs since we had to put Daphne down. I've been waiting on a kitty to wander up to the house or in the library but we found him in the Petco adoption center. His name was Tyger. His new name is Pixel. He's almost 3 and he likes it here. Well, except for the chipping, shots and the ear mite drops but other than that, we'z good people.

I've been hanging out on myfitnesspal with Darkwitless and Daisy, counting calories and stuffz. I hope that everyone is doing well.

Does PetCo make you jump through hoops for the adoption process? Your kitty is cute. :) I want a new pet, but I don't want to pay an arm and a leg for it. I can't believe it's been 3 years petless. I miss my doggy so much. I still cry sometimes, and it makes my heart hurt so bad. She was 16 and healthy as an ox and then bam a rapid spreading cancer and had to put her down. Had a tumor on/near her lymph nodes that grew so big so fast, in a matter of days, and it made it so she couldn't walk and then the pressure was blocking functions of her lymph nodes...gosh I miss her so much. I guess the only solace I can have is that her health decline was very quick.

Ok gotta stop this. Making me cry like a baby.

I've lived in Philadelphia since 1987 - there are many programs to help the homeless but I've never heard of this one. You'd think a radio station or the news would have picked this human interest item, wouldn't you?

How long have you and your dad been doing this unholy?

My dad and I only a few years, but my dad has been doing it himself for years, it's only in the past couple years started to blossom into a successful enough situation that we can turn it into a non-profit. And there are about 4 other guys who show up down at cityhall/love park on Dec 25th in the morning to help the homeless as well, one guy brings eggs & coffee, and there are 1-2 other people with clothes, and blankets... We don't care about getting the medias attention. When you're there, and you see the look of gratitude on someones face when they see that theres people there with clothing, food, blankets, whatever, it just makes your day. =)

I know here in the greater Cincy area there are several organizations collecting coats and other winter gear as well as sleeping bags, blankets and shoes. Most of the grocery stores have a large box to accept donations and all of the schools too. The loacl Tv stations will each run a bit on the morning news or noon news as well.

Shipping clothes just isn't very practical.

Is there a Philly area vape group? Maybe talk to some of them about helping out.

I know our local blanket/sleeping bag group just started up a couple of years ago. For a city as large as we are, we have very few cold shelters for the homeless... DS#1 & I have spent some time volunteering at one of the newest ones.
DS#2 just did some work with some of his classmates getting the same place ready for the "season". Painting, scrubing and sorting clothes and bedding.

Yea, well it's really those in the Philly area I would be targeting anyhow.. Last year I was working for a huge healthcare company at their headquarters, there was 3 buildings and over 2000 employees all in all in town... we got so many donations we had to make two trips in to the city.... Ya know with no monetary donations and working on a tight budget it can be pretty difficult to get large vehicles for transportation, considering almost all storage/haul businesses are closed on christmas. Anyway, I'll get in touch with the Philly Vapers group and see whats what. Maybe I can get a few volunteers too!

Seems like a great thing to bring up to your local group. I dont think there is much that PIF could do,seems you need local effort. Good luck though! Its always great to help people in your community. My family is always involved. We do whatever we can to help.

Our local Petco does not make you jump through hoops.
Our local Petsmart lets almost anyone, with any rules, bring their cats in for adoption. Knowing animal rescue people over decades has really clouded my judgement over the "rules". The rules and hoops can be crazy. A firefighter friend dog sat a co-worker's dog for 2 weeks and found that she loved dogs and loved walking the dog. She was turned down from a dog rescue org because she didn't have a fenced in backyard. She didn't own her own home. That dog lived in a foster home with close to 20 other dogs and they shared a backyard. It really seems like some animal rescues set the standards way too high. I have an older friend who is on disability and has always had a dog. He was turned down because his deceased dog's vet records showed lapses in annual checkups and vaccinations. This man would go without food, if his dog needed to go to the vet for a reason. His dog that had lapses in vet records lived 16 years. A co-worker had to sign a paper that she would use a certain vet and the vet would report back if the dog didn't receive adequate care, including- get this- dental cleanings. My co-worker had to sign papers that the 8 year old dachshund could be repossessed, if he didn't get his teeth taken care of.

I don't want dogs, cats, rabbits, damn anything going to bad homes. I don't want to find an animal a home and wonder if it's been given away to an even worse home but for God's sake don't let just any crazy cat lady make up some "hoops".

I'm sorry about your doggy. I'm glad that she lived such a long healthy life and her illness was sudden and over quickly. Honestly, I think that's all we humans can all wish for. I'd say that 3 years pet-less is long enough. You've got some love to give to a doggy and there's doggies out there that need that love. Ask around your local rescue orgs and weed out the hoops and rules ones, if you need to. The firefighter friend sought out the person who turned her application down and explained how dedicated about walking and how much love she had to give and won the person over. Good luck and go get you a doggy to love! You and the doggy deserve it.

Thanks Enid. Thant made me feel better. :) And I concur with all of those sentiments. And it's tough, cuz I have some very strong beliefs about animal welfare, and it crazily doesn't align with certain animal rescues and even many supposed animal rights activists around here. Rains irony. Just gets my goat, I tell ya. Actually, it's easy to get a goat around them here parts. Chickens, too. I don't think they like to go for rides though. But that would be funny!

Our Aussie Sydney is pretty low energy, an absolute suck-up to anyone, very mellow. The rescue group had him listed as not doing well with men -- all he cares about is that you give him a treat and an ear scratch or belly rub :)

Heidi, on the other hand, was a huge Aussie and high energy, great running companion.

Yeah - Dakota is MELLOW for the most part. Apparently I over socialized him as a puppy (we had a mean wire hair fox terrier before).

My house was burglarized nearly 3 years ago - dog was found around the corner. Luckily our neighbor Tommy - who Dakota absolutely adores, was at that store and spotted him - invited him into his truck and brought him home - found our brand new door wide open. The juvenile delinquents let him loose - of course, I don't know if they struck him  (he's never been struck) One of the kids (2 of the 5 or 6 were apprehended breaking into another house) - he was really upset about letting the BIG HUSKY with the BLUE EYES loose (he was a first time offender) - that set the wheels in motion that the detective knew he'd burgled my house as well.

Of course Dakota is more mellow now that he's 10 and after having that massive stroke in 2011. He communicates more now...regular Chatty Kathy. And he's learned to "smile" which is apparently very common with the breed. :)

Without a doubt the best dog I've ever owned. :):):)
