My first language is not English, my first few languages were not English. As such Ceridwen has been picking up other languages since her birth. Her mother has snapped at me before for talking in Farsi or Arabic in public on the phone. Of course she has no problem with Italian or Spanish.

Tonight, for the first time in months, she wanted to see her daughter for more than 2m. Since I'm not a .... I didn't even hesitate or bring up it was hugely inconvenient and getting late. I even gave Ceridwen an early bath and got her dressed up nicely, packed her favorite toys, and prepared in case she wanted to stay the night with Mommy.

So not 3m into talking with her mother Ceridwen is having trouble getting her point across. So she tries Farsi and Italian mixed like a toddler would. Ceridwen then looks back at me and says the same thing in Farsi and Italian to me with an obvious "Help me speak to Mommy, Daddy" look on her face... I barely begin to respond in Farsi to Ceridwen and Mommy FREAKS OUT about how rude it is to speak another language in front of her.

As if I have initiated some hidden communication w/ Ceridwen...

Within 30s Ceridwen wanted to leave she was scared and on the verge of tears.

I get speaking a foreign language when it's unnecessary in front of other people is rude. However, this is a 3yo toddler trying to learn and wanting her father's help in figuring something out. I don't think it's unreasonable to take a minute and try to help Ceridwen figure out what she is trying to say and then say it ~in English~ so she learns the ~English~ way of saying it.

It's not like it's a surprise the guy you dated and married speaks other languages?!?

I'm ....ing rip-.... furious right now.    -Magnus

After I took the crib apart, I cried for 15 minutes  then put this together:

Awwwww.... *chin quivers*

It's so beautiful though! Before you know it you'll be choosing decorative pillows for it and finding things hidden under the mattress. So cute! -Magnus

Magnus: my heart breaks for you, your daughter and yes, your daughter's mother. You daughter's mother is obviously dealing with something internally and taking it out on you and your daughter. So sad. Make sure your daughter knows she did nothing wrong - mommy was just frustrated that she didn't understand her. (sigh) Does she suffer from depression? or other mental illness?

BMontgomery - do you have a gate on her door? lol We had to install baby gates on the boys doors when they graduated from crib to bed to keep them from wondering the house in their new found freedom. I always worried that they'd figure out the gate at the top of the stairs so we added to the layer of protection by putting one on their doorway. OMGosh how DS#1 hated that gate.

It's a sad yet happy day to graduate from the crib.

And how cool is it that you've passed your mother language onto your child! My grandmother grew up speaking German in the home but when she started school, HER grandmother decreed that only English would be spoken to avoid "confusion". She understood the language but as she got older she lost her ability to read or speak it. My father learned only a small bit and that was in college. By the time I was born, no thought was given to teaching me, my sister or brother.

Now when we moved here and were looking at schools we intentionally choose a school which offered Spanish on a weekly basis starting in kindergarten. I think it's very important to have another language - and I think Spanish makes sense in this country since we have so many Spanish speaking people here. But with my German heritage it would be neat to have a basic understanding of the language. Thankfully our relative in Germany all speak English (face palm)

The child is brilliant, yet she has yet to master opening doors. I'm sure it's around the corner though. We will install sliding locks at the top of her door.
