Can some parents help a childless person out? Heather's very best friend, who tried for years and years to get pregnant, is due in June. Heather wants us to buy cutesy stuff and knit/crochet baby stuff. I'll knit some baby hats for the fall/winter and I bought some of the nursery stuff off her wishlist but I think the ultimate present would be money or gift cards. I've been shipping all the things that I buy straight to her. If I was pregnant, I'd want the nursery stuff right away.

Parents, after a few cutesy presents wouldn't you just prefer some cash?

I would have prefered cash before the cutesy presents.

The best thing to do is (if you have one available) ask someone with a child two years old or under what they did not get as a gift and what the did not realize they needed until they needed it. Believe me, the best gift of all time (even better than cash) is finding that supply you never thought of and not having to go shopping or make do with something else because you need it right now.

And I suggest someone with children under two becuase they will still remember what they ended up needing that no one gave them and they didn't think of themselves...

I asked the wife (who has a better memory for this stuff than I) and she suggested ice packs, shampoo, simethicone and thermometer. She said that at all the baby showers she's been to the last seven years she was the only one who ever gave shampoo. No body thinks about cold packs/ice packs, and evidently the "baby kits" are starting to not include thermometers anymore.

Simethicone (gas relief drops) is the best. stuff. ever.

Also a book or dvd or something on baby signs. By the time she was four months old, Rhianna could tell us when she was hungry, when she was thirsty, if she hurt (and where) and if her diaper needed changing (and what "kind" of changing she needed). Simethicone pretty much took care of 90% of anything else :)

CASH, unless it's endless babysitting services ;-)

And make hats in different sizes to "grow into" and a baby blanket. The few we received for the boys are precious gifts and other than their 'coming home" outfits and receiving blanket and hat from the hospital are the only baby things I kept. Oh and some hand stitched bibs. If it was handmade, I kept it. lol

LOL - I ditto the ice packs lol.

Oh, and those little baby nail clippers. I got 7 of them when PG with #1 - and thought there is no way I need this many. I was so, so wrong!

Oh, another cool gift we got was a couple of books and every year for his birthday the same friend would send a couple more age appropriate books or books based on his interests (as he got older) She stopped with his 12th birthday. We have quite a library of awesome kid's books.

Diapers- to be honest, my bestest present ever was diapers- that helped more than cash- cause cash I would have spent on something cute myself- but diapers where there, stacked up and I LOVED that I could use them and not have to add 20.00 plus to my grocery bill twice a week. :) LOL

and YES Simethicone- OMG- That was amazing!!

and clippers, I agree with that- lotion- and shampoo.

Its those little things that add up and we hate to buy- cause it makes us put back that cutesy thing.

and whats cute to someone else is not cute to everyone, but, toiletries are SOOOO useful no matter who you are.

I had 4 kids- 3 NEVER wore caps- PERIOD. even as newborns, you couldnt keep a hat on two of them. (with the last one I just gave up and never tried)
One kid wore hats her whole life till she was over 3 and got hair.
well as a newborn we KY jellied bows in her hair- but thats cause she was a girl- and bald, so she either had on a hat or a bow. but none of mine would wear the skull caps as infants for warmth, it was more for fashion, and only then it was the girl, and we fussed with it A LOT!!!

I got the diaper genie, used it for a few weeks, got the wipes warmer- kept me scared it would burn down my house, (granted it was a gift AFTER my house had burned down) , bottle warmer - never used it, kid didnt even take a bottle- went strait to sippy cups)

OHHHH SOCKS!! there are NEVER enough freakin frakin socks in a babys house. EVER--

oh and I swear by teething tabs- they are by 'hylands' I think, in pharmacy dept. they are a natural med. LOVE them.

Available storage space makes a difference with diapers--we couldn't have more than two packs at a time simply because we didn't have room for more. Also, the people that bought us diapers bought us "Newborn" size. Rhianna was five pounds three ounces--she was two months old before she could fit in the newborn size, so that might be something to wait on until after the baby is born. Especially since the doctor told us she was going to be about 8 pounds after looking at the ultrasound during her labour...

My favorite baby gift was white onsies, tshirts, white sox and white recieving blankets. I loved that everything was clean and white and I could wash it all in one load. I got a pink and a blue paint pen and could personalize them with just a heart,a star,a flower or a name, something small and cute.

baby nailclippers are awesome,my kids are teens and still use them, lol.
and both still have the hand knitted baby blankets that were made for them.

Well, you're right ;) but I think we've found one in our home that we forgot we had that might work and we don't have to spend any more money. It's kinda got bare breasts in it though...a painting, not a photo! I'll have to link it so I don't get in trouble for posting it (even though its ART!). Just need to see if the mat is white on the back side...black matting won't work. If it's not, I'll paint it white. :D

Wow, Chelle. There's boobies up in my dressing room. Great minds think alike. If you google search Nusch Eluard, it's the one on her on the velvet draped couch.

About the baby stuff: diapers are out. She was going with cloth but now has decided on natural diapers, without the gel inside. I don't wanna mess up on the sizing, even if I knew what brand that she's going with.

Heather's sister has breast cancer. She's not been happy or comfortable with most of the wigs/ scarves/hats* but saw one in a youtube video that she just loved. I tracked it down and ordered it from the UK. Heather was shocked that it was 67 bucks with shipping but it's what she not just wanted but adored.
*your head is sensitive, most store bought hats are stiff, silky scarves won't stay knotted, wrapping turbans is a lot of work and her job is much more professional dress for knitted stuff not to stick out.

here's the cute hat:
