I've heard the pine needle mulch is very good at preventing weeds.
I avoid any of the dyed mulches. I prefer cedar shredded mulch because the bugs don't like it as much as other mulches. But I love pine needle mulch but it's not very popular in this part of the mid-west (yes I know I live in KY but I'm in the northern part, and we're mid-west, not southern ;-) )
