Hey BOB do you have your own dehydrator? I am looking into getting my own as I want to start making jerky. My son is a hunter and I want to start with beef but I thought I would try my hand at venison as I tasted some my friend had that her mom brought down from Minnesota that was to die for! I did some jerky in the oven but it was a pain and messed up a lot of pans. I have been looking at some Nesco dehydrators this past week to buy.

thats a good question......umm possible answers
1. your crazy
2. your taste buds are all the heck off
3. you had banana fosters in that atty before
4. TV messed up some how
5. the banana in pajamas came down the stairs and messed with your juice.

That or the coconut flavoring just tastes a heck of a lot like bananas to me.

But I sure do like the last one. Now if I just had stairs in my house for that naner to come down.

I did my last batch in the oven but the recipe recommended 170 for 6 hours. I did it that way it was still a little moist. I put it in for an hour longer. It turned out good but like I said I had to use 2 broiler pans with racks. I just thought the dehydrator would be easier to take care of and manage not to mention the electricity. I will try the 250 for 4 hours. My kids ate that batch in less than a day!!!!! It was a hit for sure.

Star, yeah we just use one of those cheap stackable tray type ones. I prefer venison over beef, as does about everyone I know. I've seen it done many ways. I have a redneck friend up the road that has a pickup with a camper shell on it. He puts a piece of plywood across the bed and sets the shell over it and uses a space heater. It's an absolute riot to see! But he does a over a 4X8 sheet a day in it!

That reminds me It's close to that time. I'll take 10 LBs to deer camp for 4 of us in Nov., and will probably have to make 30lbs by the time the kids are done with it and find all my hiding spots!!!! It's all good though cause I harvested 4 last year and my kid took one, so we still have enough left. With any luck I'll take one with a bow between now and then as well.

I'm calling it a night, good talking to you all and hopefully I won't see you til tomorrow evening.....that'll mean I'm feeling better and getting something done. Nite. boB

One last thing.....we do quite a bit of it with a slicer instead of grinding it and using those caulk gun thingys. If you do that the best way to slice it thin is to have it partially frozen, a lot less messy and slices much better. Between a cheap dehydrator and slicer I'm thinking around $50. boB

Just got everything hooked back up and the torch works fine. I am so happy. Else I would have had to go back to the propane only one and it is really slow melting. It must have been either dirt or condensation in the hose.

likely condensation....but without seeing the sputter and how it was acting firsthand it really is impossible to diagnose...important part is it's working
