no no.. you are right Lox.

ok.. there's 3 categories basically...

Chew: what yall are remembering from high school (also known as dip)
Snus: basically a milder version of chew.. but one you can swallow and comes in little contained packs, like PTB
Snuff: powdery-type tobacco that you sniff

EDIT: here's a website I was referred to recently for snuff

just to clarify....the snus comes in little pouches and is considered 'spitless'. You keep it tucked in your top lip instead of the bottom, so you don't get much juice mixing in with your saliva since it's further from the glands. *clarification* do NOT swallow the pouch!

LOL..

Here's the blurp from that website:
Few people in the Americas know anything about one of the oldest, and safest, forms of tobacco taking; one which is now gaining great popularity in the U.S. and Canada - Nasal Snuff.

Nasal snuff is a finely ground, flavored tobacco, taken in the non-offensive form of a simple sniff into the nostrils. Snuff began as the tobacco choice of royalty and the elite in 17th century Europe, before being provided to the masses. Still popular in Europe today, snuff is now gaining popularity in the Americas.

whoo-hoo I am catching on! and no girl- actually- it would be 4 catagories- (cause I HAVE dipped, but never could handle no chaw! LOL)

dip (snuff, copenhagen and some off brands now) goes in your bottom lip, although I put mine in my top lip, less spitting that way- comes in tins or cans.
chew or 'chaw' as we call it.(red man, levi garrett, days work, beechnut) goes in your cheek, and is bitten off by the plug- and comes in a pouch-
Then snuff, that came in those brown bottles 100 years ago and folks had a little silver spoons they used to 'sniff' it with-
and then snus, which is a more (in my opinion from what I understand) 'gentlemanly' version of 'dip'

I think I am with the program!! LOL

Now, about 20-30 years ago skoal came out with a product that was basicly skoal IN a little pouch, called bandits- I knew quite a few people (women) who quit smoking with them- they were slightly more lady like, especially if you put it in your top lip- and with it being in a pouch it didnt get all over your teeth-

Yep, I think I might look into 'snuff' - :) thanks!!! :)

This is mostly right.

Snus can come in packets or loose.
Chew (or American Snuff) can also come in packets or loose.

Snus is processed differently than American Snuff. American Snus is processed slightly different than Swedish Snus.

There is a distinct difference between Swedish Snus and American Snus. American Snus is much sweeter and doesn't last as long. Chew, or American Snuff (Copenhagen, Skoal, etc) is or can be particularly nasty (health wise). Snus is a safer alternative, there's tons of research on it.
