I get so aggravated when we've planned something for weeks and then at the last minute Tonys dad wants us over for a cookout~! So much for anything else we may have been going to do.

You should just explain about commitments,friends dont do that to each other.Its unacceptable.A parent should understand that you choose to keep your word and honor your commitments.Tell him your free to cookout another night.
well according to Tony 'family comes first'. I totally get that, and if I had family I would feel the same....but this is HIS family, and at the rate we're going it's never going to be MY family too. I'm pretty sure after 5 years you'd have a pretty good idea of whether you want to marry someone or not. I firmly believe if he could he would marry Miller Light and Slayer. Me on the other hand......

I have found in my personal life that I have had times when I've had to make a stand for myself. The outcome has not always come out successfully but in retrospect I never would have been able to respect myself if I didn't. So far as anyone of us REALLY KNOW, this is the only life we have to live, and if you don't live it the way you want to, without give and take from a partner, especially if you're giving many more times than you're taking, it really can hurt one's self-esteem.
A reasonable family would understand and put you and Tony's original plans first.
Now back to the regular programming......
